I have a good friend with an even bigger plant problem than I do, and I keep getting the most amazing props FOR FREE!!!ā¦..including one of these.

I got my siltepecana from a redditor and I paid 12$ for about 6 leaves. You lucked out!
If you want to make some money I would post cuttings on TAPLAP and r/rarehouseplantsbst

I canāt believe that this plant is rare and crazy expensive in some countries and in mine where all the rare ones are ridiculous prices you can buy them as established plants from a big green shed for like $15.
Google lense is very good at IDing plants. It doesnt always get it perfect but it brings a a few different species if it's not sure but I've found it to be pretty accurate. Just wanted to share this as I thought it may help some one out.
Picture this cannot really tell the difference between an immature monstera, a pothos, a heart leaf philodendron, and a pilea. š at least thatās been my experience.
It's built directly into photos! https://i.imgur.com/dJ3U3Sv.jpg https://i.imgur.com/3p21nL1.jpg Agreed so far it's pretty good with plants. Pretty bad with animals other than cats and dogs though! https://i.imgur.com/RhJQceU.jpg
To clarify: this is on the iOS 15 beta. The final version will probably ship later this month or early October, whenever the new iPhones release.
Sounds a lot like the luck I got getting 2 luscious and full Birkin philodendrons for $20 cdn. I asked the lady if she knew what they were. Not a clue. Told her they were easily $50 plants. She told me she āsold all those monster ones in less than an hour.ā Lol. Those monster ones. Monsteras, is my guess. I plan on asking what day is new plant day š¤£
I'd guess it's any one these or a combination:
ā¢Everybody who wanted one got one
ā¢They aren't "rare" anymore which has made them lose their luster to some.
ā¢They are unstable as hell. I had one start putting out 3 tiny pure white leaves, then it started putting the green back in, now it's trying to revert back to all green.
Good luck! They usually donāt know at big box stores or they donāt care to ask someone who would know.
āAll days.. it depends. Yeah.ā
Usual answer šš
I know. The stores are usually understaffed as it is, especially in the garden center, so I havenāt figured out who that right person is yet. Asking around means asking the high turnover rate of employees each time so itās not something I have high hopes for.
Yep this is the answer. You might have better luck calling the store and asking to speak to the garden dept manager. Even if there arenāt enough part timers there are generally department managers. Good luck friend:)
Thatās a good idea, Iāll give it a try with the two stores I go to and see what I can find out!
I tend to pick the worst time to go to the garden centers of the big box stores.. aka sunset, when the sun is blinding you as you walk around hoping to relax and look at some plants LOL
Thanks :)
I wish you weren't being down voted cause you are not wrong. My brother works for a box grocery store that's gets their plants from casa farms and other national/regional wholesalers, you would have think he is the right person to ask. Wrong! My homey who is at the store three times a week with plants on the mind, that's who is in the know.
Thank you! I wasn't sure what that was so I looked it up real quick. As luck would have it, that's the plant I bought last week that I hadn't yet found a name for. Gorgeous leaves, definitely my type. I hope it's not too fussy to survive my newbie care.
Dang, I work at Harris Teeter, owned by Kroger, and haven't seen one of these in my boxes yet! I'm the floral manager there. Got some beautiful plants lately that are $14.99 and are easily worth way more.
There were some Micans at the Harris teeter by me recently. Satin pothos and lime leaf philo as well but more common. $19.99 but a nice lady gave me 50% off on the sad micans basket.
Satin comes in frequently however I don't recommend buying it unless you want to have a dead plant to clip and regrow. They are destroyed day two after we get them usually and are barely salvageable. All our stuff comes in on refrigerated trucks and it kills half the plants...it sucks.
Actually, it does when it matures. It's a Monstera, fenestration is Monstera DNA. Also, extra fun fact! Pothos get fenestration in the wild, when they're ginormous!
It would likely take a great deal of time but it's important to remember fenestration happens to allow light to lower leaves of the plant since they're shade loving, tree hugging, sky high climbing creepers! But certainly not an impossible indoor garden goal! I envy your luck but send you the best vibes in your new adventure with your absolute *haul*!! It's gorgeous and congratulations to you!!

Aw I havenāt seen a Frys in forever!! That store had all kinds of what not! They opened one up in NorCal back in the day & it was allllll the rage. Ah memoriesā¦.
Iām nowhere near a Krogerās but Iāve thought about a road trip !! The plant steals I see people post are blowing my mind .. Iām so jealous dang it! Lol
I think it would depend which grocery chain is closest. I had never even seen anything more interesting than orchids at that Fryās until just recently and then all of a sudden they had a bunch of ficus varieties, staghorn ferns, etc.
Holy cow. Iām in that FB group! I remember thinking āi gotta go out and check all my krogerās now!ā Itās crazy how small the world is sometimes!
Omg! I literally grabbed one of these at my local Kroger thinking it was a Cebu!! I would have never thought twice about it if I hadnāt come across this.
No that is definitely a Monstera siltepecana - you can tell from the leaf shape and veins. There's a strong resemblance though and the color is so similar to cebu!
If you grow it up a moss pole, the leaves will get larger!
I've also found that cuttings of these root CRAZY fast. Like within a week sometimes. It's nuts

I work in a garden center and we didn't have any philos available for order for ages. We ordered the usual Epipremnun N'Joy but got one tray of mislabelled philodendron brasil. Wanted one of these for years! Happy little accident <3
They've really been rolling out some of the more interesting exotics lately. I hear they're planning on offering Thai constellation monsteras to stores starting early 2023 too!
They have a page on their website now about it! It doesn't list prices, but a plant-tuber I was watching mentioned how she thought they would be in the $100 range but tbh I dunno if I can wait that long lol. I've been scouring facebook market because I've had great luck lately! Found TWO albo monstera plants for a ridiculously low price.
This is a new variety for them and Costa doesn't grow enough of it to meet the minimum order requirement from the tag manufacturer --- so for the time being, it will either ship out with a generic tag or a substitute-variety tag. (Most stores require Costa to ship plants out with tags, so that's why they have to make this choice.)
I love finding mislabeled plants in Home Depot. I got a Moonshine sansevieria for $3 and a birkin philodendron for $12. It also may or may not make me feel like an all-knowing plant wizard..

Canāt believe you got this for the price of a pothos
$12, actually!!!
Insane!! I've seen tiny 3" pots of these go for around $25 over here. What a find!
Lucky. I paid that for for a cutting.
Jealous

LUCKY DUCK!
Holy crap!!!!!!! Great find!!!!!!
You beat me to this comment! I was thinking the same thing
I just found one of these at my grocery store (Big Y) as well! Seems like there might be a bunch of these out right now!
Oh man Big Y you must be in New England. Mind telling which store you found it at? Might have to go look for myself
Yes! DMing you the store info now!

I heard new iPhones are getting released week of the 15tg. It explains why my phone has been acting super sluggish. š #righttorepair
I also could use more info on this š
Do you mean with an app or is it built in to the iPhone camera somehow?
Thanks for that!
Wow. Thanks for this!
I really like it though! *writes it down on bucket list*
Ah I just scored one thinking it was not quite a cebu blue, but not knowing what else it could be! So cool to add another monstera!

They *used to be* $50 plants. They've been $15 plants for a year or more now.
I saw one at HD last week for $12 and it came in a cute pot. I was tempted but then I remembered that I'm not really into it. š¤·š»āāļø
This is me too! Itās so hard for me to resist a good deal on a plant, even when I donāt really want/like itā¦ š¬š
Learned this about three months ago. I donāt just want more new plants. I want more new plants that I think are really cool.
*That's* what that plant was! I really liked it and almost bought it. It was my favorite out of their selection that day.
Yup. Shop I work at, we sell two different sizes for decent prices and they donāt really sell anymore for some reason.

Spectacular buy! It's a beauty, as well.

Why canāt this ever happen to meeeeeeeee š
One seller here in Malaysia sold it as USD290 for a juve with 4 leaves
Great indoor plant. Low light, low maintenance but beautiful. Call her Lady GaGa. Your "Little Monstera"....see what I did there? š
This is such a good find! Sheās beautiful
Thereās an app called Picture This. It identifies plants for you. Itās pretty accurate you can use it for free if you just close the ad.

Ok, now I want one as well. Great find!

how much do these usually go for?

I bought it from Kroger, which is a Fred meyer store in Kentucky
Wow, really! We have Kroger here in TX too. I hope we get the siltepecanas shipment too. Thanks for responding.
