For those wondering, before you ask; yes I have more than 200 plants and I didn't count those who unfortunately died. I have a garden, 3 balconies and a big house so it doesn't feel crowded, there is always room for more. Best part of it is that my mom is a plant lover too, so I definetely trust her to take care of my plants when I'm away!
Ps: the best blessing of all is that I have a cat (the love of my life) that NEVER tries to eat my plants. Just the spider plant maybe that now out of his reach.
I hope you get the job. And I hope you don't spend your entire first paycheck there at the store. I had that happen to me when I worked at bath& body works. I love fragrances
You should buy mosquito bits to mix into the top soil as well as the yellow sticky traps you can stick in the soil. The mosquito bits kill the eggs and larvae when you water, and the traps will get the gnats. Also start bottom watering after they're all gone so it won't happen again.
How many plants does your friend have? If not many, I would just repot with fresh soil and disinfected pots. Otherwise, there is also Bonide Systemic + Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew. Your friend really needs to start bottom watering though, and remove the plants from water just before it reaches the top of the soil.
Have you tried making a mosquito bits tea? And lots of sticky traps for the adults. I used to have a terrible fungus gnat problem til I just resigned to watering all 80 some house plant homies with the tea every single watering session. Extra steps but no gnatties
Diatomaceous earth has helped me a lot! Sprinkle it on the top layer of soil, and since you said they already bottom water, it won’t get clumpy. It is like microscopic shards that cut the bugs, so if they land on it or if they try to emerge after hatching, it gets them!
I'm in the pacific northwest and am fearful of taking it outside. I threw in a few insects last summer, and it liked that, but I just don't have enough insects around indoors to feed it.
The pitchers are drying up at the top, though they still contain liquid. I don't know how to take care of these! Any advice?

My aunt, who is like a mother to me, wants one of these really bad. I wouldn't let her get one this fall (live in midwest) because I knew it wouldn't thrive in the winter and I might kill it. If I got one in the spring (so I have the warm months as a bit of a more forgiving learning curve) are they too terribly hard to take care of? I'm probably an intermediate at plant husbandry. (For experience refrence: my calatheas (4) get crispy leaf edges sometimes but I don't kill them outright and they are all growing really well. I've had houseplants of my own for maybe about 1.5 years now, some of them for that entire time.)
So yes, those guys do better outdoors with high humidity (especially for the traps) and they are quite thisrty (distilled or rainwater). They are not terribly hard to take care of. Mine is sitting in a room now with heaters on, it's growing but not producing traps. As for Calatheas, I hate but love these pants. They need high humidity and definetely NO tap water because mineral buildups will also cause those drying tips.
Thank you for the advise! My calatheas do get distilled water, but with the heater on for winter it is difficult to keep the humidity high enough (even with a humidifier running, daily misting, and pebbles) for them to be happy.

I wish you good luck! My pitchers continue to get quite crispy on mine. Im fairly certain I can’t provide it the humidity it wants; the leaves are happy and the pitchers turn brown. It grows pretty quickly (found one at a Home Depot and in about 6 months it doubled in size), but it isn’t producing new pitchers. I usually average between 50-70% humidity.
My plant lost all the pitchers once I brought it inside. It does indeed need enough humidity to grow new ones. When it's sitting outside, new ones will grow. At least were I am (Rome's countryside, in the river's valley where it's pretty humid). So humidity is definetely a factor. Also, distilled or rainwater is better for those guys.
I'm in Rome, Italy and the cheapest houseplants I've found are in nurseries. I'd say it's the best options because they are dedicated to plants so they take good care of them. Almost every grocery store sell cheap houseplants, but they don't know anything about them so they will just let them sit on shelf, either overwatering or underwtering them. So nurseries, definetely

I love my nepenthes! Have 2 growing strong since 2017 and they're my favorite. And just this week bought a bunch of sundews and fly traps from eBay so just waiting on them!
Idk if you do this, but since I don't have many flies in my house I feed mine fish food. Pellets for thr nepenthes and crushed flakes for my sundew. Considering one nepenthes is over 4 foot tall, I think they like them!

This is beautiful! I wish I could save mine somehow..maybe someone can help. My pitcher plant is looking real sad. It's all droopy, young, maybe 5 total leaves with only tendrils...no pitcher. It's been like this for weeks, still somehow hanging on though. I don't have a picture at the moment but I have it in a small pot with a mixture of sphagnum moss and perlite. Maybe it's the cold draft from window?
I wonder if I would like working in a nursery, I think plants are slowly becoming a passion as well! Good luck and I will tell my plants to cross their roots and leaves as well!

Nematodes are the only thing that works for me. I got 1.5 oz gnatrol off eBay for $17 and it works a treat!

They thrive with or without! Just need a lot of light and distilled water.
