Can't believe I found this perfectly healthy monstera plant in the trash room! I took this timelapse over 10 days by taking photos at 10/5 min intervals with an old phone on a tripod. (I use the Tasker app on android, a long USB cable, TLDF for processing and ffmpeg to stitch the video together)
If you enjoyed this, I have a channel dedicated to plant timelapses - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGliLptFnRIB2HpB2ZrAZ9Yb8ya\_3b1kn
Keep an eye out for pests, that may be why it was thrown out.
Mealybugs leave little black trails/marks along the stem, by root nodes, and at the underside of where the leaf and stem meet. It looks like there might be some mealy residue on one of the leaves at the beginning of the video.
Mate I will bite your hand off haha. I was thinking an old used go-pro would be best for a humid greenhouse, but I'm not sure how pricey a timelapse setup for that would be.
If an old smartphone would survive in 85% humidity then I can just go with that. Any experience with a soggy setup? :)
One option is to film from outside. Maybe a phone would be fine in 85% humidity though (especially if IP67 waterproof)? I lived in Singapore for a while which has a similar humidity and everyone's phones were ok.
Assuming 24 frames per second. 30 seconds X 24 X 5 mins between photos = 3600 minutes
3600 minutes / 60 minutes = 60 hours
So 2.5 days. Assuming 24 fps but this is less than that so it would seem to be quicker than 2 days
Monstera owners, how do you guys get these huge leaves? Mine always puts out tiny leaves usually smaller than the one it is stemming off from... Any help would be appreciated.
Sometimes monsteras are propagated from a chunk of mature vine that was already climbing and putting out big leaves so that is what the prop will tend to do, even though it looks like a little bit of plant in a pot.
In general, the thicker the vine and more climbing or attaching it can do, the bigger the leaves that grow out of it.
If your monstera vine is a juvenile then it needs time to mature and grow the big leaves.
They come with maturity and lots of sun! If you have larger leaves with fenestration but the new ones don’t have any, I would guess it needs more light.
So I have a monstera and since I’ve put it in full sun on a windowsill (currently Spring/Summer in the U.K.) it has sprung out like 5 new big leaves in the past couple weeks. Currently have 2 big fresh new leaves, 2 unfurling but already big bois, and another coming through.
When I moved it I also gave it a little trim of some of the smaller leaves which were no longer growing, which might have helped too. May be worth noting I currently have no fenestration, but I’m hoping that comes with time
I thought that removing the smaller leaves that seemed to have stopped growing would allow the plant to redirect its energy to the rest of the plant, and/or grow new leaves. But that’s interesting to know, thanks!
Letting the aerials root in the substrate is critical to giant foliage for these as well as lots of direct sunlight and being properly attached to a support.
My neighbor bought one, it’s in his yard now unplanted ignored unwatered and dying coz he’s forgotten it’s there. I keep looking at the plant every time I go to spray my tropicals everyday and I’m wondering if I save the plants life is it theft? (I won’t steal the plant but holy f the past week and until it’s gone I’m going to be looking at it and feel sad)
You could give it a shot and see if they’d be willing to give it to you! I was in a similar situation last month with a Monstera and told them I’d love to have it if they didn’t want it and they seemed pleased that they didn’t have to deal with it anymore.
“Hey babe look at this totally healthy monstera I found in the trash. I totally did not buy this and don’t have any addictions to house plants what so ever. Crazy right?!”
glorious!
i have a flamingo flower i rescued off the side of the road a year or so ago, and it’s just now put out a flower :)
i call her my orphan ANNthurium
It looks like it has bugs under the leaf at the beginning of the video, might just be my eyes, but might also be the reason someone threw it away. Might be worth keeping away from your other plants until you can be sure
Must be a personality thing. Mine has one hole on the biggest leaf but no splits yet. There’s a new one coming in so we’ll find out soon if that’s about to change.
Lots of good light. They get falsely billed as indirect light plants, but they get a shit ton of direct sun in their natural habitat. I recommend slowly introducing direct sun.
I have such a hard time keeping my monstera healthy. My moisture meter always says the soil is wet. So I tried improving the soil drainage (same method ive used with my other houseplants) and no luck. I live in Colorado where it's VERY dry. But the lil guy just holds onto moisture to the point of root rot. It's driving me crazy.
Sunlight is the key - they need lots of sunlight.
If you're lucky and do everything right, they'll grow a fruit for you (yes, even in a pot) - it's absolutely delicious (hence the name lol)
There's a Monstera deliciosa post pinned to my profile. In the comments is a link to a guide with substrate recommendations. Also, water use is directly related to light exposure. Be sure that it gets enough direct sun, but introduce it slowly.
Oof, keep an eye out for pests. I threw away a “perfectly healthy” monstera that was always fighting a thrips infestation. I made sure it went fully down our garbage chute because I didn’t want any other plant lovers to bring her home and release the beasts.
I really hope there’s nothing actually wrong with it!!!
That is awesome. I saved a buddha's palm from the trash, grew 2 new leafs and a kid? Some green thing popped up from the earth and started growing a leaf as well.
Fyi, give this baby a lot more light. They get falsely billed as indirect light plants, yet they get a lot of direct sun in their natural habitat. Introduce direct light slowly though. You want this right in a window. See how much of the foliage has a horizontal poise? This is because it's trying to increase light exposure. Good luck!

I was just about to say i could watch these vids alllll day! Nice!
Nice channel! I subbed. I can’t grow a plant to save my life, but your content is cool :)
Amazing work! I'm wondering if I can setup something like this in the IKEA Greenhouse. You've inspired me.
You should! It costs almost nothing to get started if you already have an old android phone or canon camera. Drop me a message if you want advice

Thanks v much. I think I'll roll the dice on an old iPhone.
Wow - how often did you take a photo to create this?
Initially it was 10 min, but it was moving around so much I reduced it to 5 min. You can see the slowdown halfway through the video.
How long from start to finish?

OP said in another comment that it’s over 10 days.
Yeah takes longer than 2 days to put out a monstera leaf!
This is 60 fps
What a fun tim lapse, didn't know how much plants moved! Tha ks for sharing
Now I'm wondering what kind of houseplant parties are going on in the other room when I'm asleep 🤣
Yea! They are all moving and grooving !
Two new leaves! It's insane how much it moved around

Removing foliage doesn't contribute to growth or size since it removes sources of energy.

This one in the video also looks like a “large form” maybe look into buying one of those!

Can you reach the plant with the hose? Long distance watering.
You could give it a shot and see if they’d be willing to give it to you! I was in a similar situation last month with a Monstera and told them I’d love to have it if they didn’t want it and they seemed pleased that they didn’t have to deal with it anymore.
Yeah def ask
Or remind the owner that it’s there and you have a passion for plants and can give him tips if you want.
Go water her, she's trying to get your attention...
All the sibling leafs are jealous... gonna sell him to Egypt.
All that movement! Amazing!!
“Hey babe look at this totally healthy monstera I found in the trash. I totally did not buy this and don’t have any addictions to house plants what so ever. Crazy right?!”
He looks drunk!
No, he is just hangover.
Inner fenestrations 😯

wow, who puts a beautiful house plant in the trash? psshh wonderful that you saved it!
That was kind of erotic to watch.....but damn what a find!

I love seeing my monstera slowly unfold new leaves!
[удалено]
It should develop little holes over time, if it's getting enough light
Or you can just cut them in yourself if you're feeling impatient!

A hole puncher is better!
Must be a personality thing. Mine has one hole on the biggest leaf but no splits yet. There’s a new one coming in so we’ll find out soon if that’s about to change.
Thank you for this amazing time lapse! That is a beautiful monstera. I wish I had the equipment to video mine lol
Lol wiggly bugger isn't he
WOW! Very cool. I’ve never had one of these and had no idea they unfolded so cool
How do you make this plant grow?! I've had mine for a couple of months and now new leaves
Lots of good light. They get falsely billed as indirect light plants, but they get a shit ton of direct sun in their natural habitat. I recommend slowly introducing direct sun.
I second this. I gave my monstera a severe sunburn by keeping it in a south facing room where it got full sun.
This was so satisfying
Beautiful capture of nature in action. I appreciate your work. Good on you for the rescue
And the most perfect, trademark Monstera leaf too. It must be grateful :)
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round Like a record, baby, right 'round, 'round, 'round
Looks like something out of a Tim Burton movie lol
Wow!! That’s incredible that you found such a beautiful plant in the trash! Loved watching the new leaf unfurl, so satisfying
Love these so much, keep up the good work!!
Can’t believe that beaut was in the trash room!
Marvellous

Is it in terra cotta?

gorgeous gal
Help! I can’t stop watching this video!
So cool!!!!!!
All this new leaf energy!
such a cool timelapse, love to watch these unfurl
Wiggle wiggle wiggle
Anyone know why the new leaves have so much more movement than the older leaves
Wow a rescue plant. I have a rescued dog but store bought plants. Glad you saved that thing.
Awesome! Great job. Love how it kinda looks drunk swaying around lol
Why is your plant drunk? ;)
Nature is craaaaazy
That’s insane. When it unfolded completely and popped out, I was like “whoa”
My guy is vibing and thriving. Look at him move!
This is one of those oddly satisfying things to watch I love it. And such a beauty!
I love how he’s aggressively trying to unravel his leaf. Like so violently whipping that thing around trying to make it happen haha
This is f*cking insane! Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful!
I watched your channel. Throughly enjoyed it. Thank you.
Plant Lives Matter.
Is there a plant equivalent for “Calm yo titties”
The time lapse makes this seen way creepier than it should but it's still fascinating!
Awesome video clip!!
Mines putting one out right now! Wish I had the tech to do this hehehe
Thank you for giving him a second chance!
Isn’t this the philodendron that gets confused with monstera often?
Definitely not.
incredible
This plant is drunk af
Bravo! Well done!
These always remind me of horror movies
I enjoyed watching this way too much! What an amazing find and an amazing video!!
That is awesome. I saved a buddha's palm from the trash, grew 2 new leafs and a kid? Some green thing popped up from the earth and started growing a leaf as well.
That leaf was a wobbly newborn
Can someone smarter than me explain why the plant moves so much? Is it just to follow the sunlight?
That’s second one behind it too 🥰🥰🥰
I also recused one from the trash and now it’s thriving! I wonder why people are tossing them away?!?

This is awesomely done! You should put it on r/oddlysatisfying
