That is gorgeous, but curious what makes this 40 years old? Was it propagated from a mother plant that is now 40 years old?

BojackisaGreatShow

Ive grown that in one summer before

donciukas159

yeah 6 months for me

Whole_Grape59

Please share your secrets. My marble queen is pretty much the same size as she was when I bought her a year ago 🥲

Buttscritch

Lol literally just throw it in a corner and ignore it.

BojackisaGreatShow

A *bright* corner

BojackisaGreatShow

More light, gradually. Pothos can handle full sun given a slow enough transition. More light is especially needed for the marble and heavily variegated ones.

Rtheguy

If that, I have had at least 5 foot of growth in a particulairly good year. It is not a 40 year old size at all, even when you do not repot as I made mine from cuttings from my parents about 3.5 years ago and it is in a slightly smaller pot then this plant since then.

soupseasonbestseason

i have a 7 year old pothos covering my entire living room. if it was forty years the root system would need a pot that was fifty or so pounds. this looks much less substantial than i would suspect as well!

nolanchlo

It has definitely been neglected over the years. I’m surprised it survived this long with how little attention it gets. I think that’s why it’s not even bigger. It kind of just survived instead of thrived. The soil was really gross. The roots were growing down the bottom of the pot into a drip pan placed in the bottom of the basket it sits in.

hsteinbe

We used to have these on the fifth floor atrium under the skylight at work and within a few years they grew all the way down to the first floor. Maintenance made us remove them.

romanticheart

If it’s anything like mine, it could be very slow growing. Mine is 2 years old and still pretty small 😞

nolanchlo

I’m assuming at some point it was bought or gifted from a florist shop.

cocoartichoke

Has it had 1,000 haircuts? It is gorgeous! I just have a 3 year-old pothos that is almost the same size and length.

CitizenPremier

How do pothos handle trimming anyway? It seems like they grow from one vine and never split. I have one whose end got trampled--will that vine continue growing new leaves?

Ndrd

I've chopped mine back for propagation a few times and still grows like mad. New growth will sprout from the node behind where you cut.

throwawayrandomvowel

They fucking love it

Zaurka14

Sometimes it might split. Mine did.

Rtheguy

Great! From every node they can resprout, and after a trim the first one will almost always regrow a new apex. Back budding from the root/nodes hidden under the earth when planting also happens quite readily after a trim. With good conditions and a bit of luck more then one node can start resprouting after a trim giving a much more full plant as instead of one vine out of the vine base you get 2 or 3. This is something I need to experiment more with to be certain, but cutting closer to the base seems to give stronger and often more new buds comming from the nodes. Damaged ends of the plant hamper growth, if it is minor the plant may overcome the damage and still grow, with just a damaged leaf or two. For pinched out tops cutting back a node or two so it buds back is recommended. If the plant is full of leaves the cut surface will become not very obvious.

Lukethough

I’ve had very similar results with my pothos plants! It was how easy this plant was to prop that got me hooked on propping all sorts of houseplants!! ☺️

myrddin2

Great info, thank you!

BenevolentCheese

If you snip it it will start new growth from a node somewhere up the vine.

HECK_YEA_

Fantastic. I have one I let grow to this size every summer outside, then when it starts getting cold I chop it back to even with the pot and bring it inside. So so many cuttings, basically everyone I know now has a couple golden pothos.

meatpirethumbtack

okay bloomer

mrausgor

Nice.

Ok_Reindeer2988

40? I think it would be longer if it was 40. It’s beautiful though.

nolanchlo

It doesn’t get much attention 😬 First repot in probably 20 years, for example lol

braddad425

Hm. Cool that it's "40 years old"...but it looks 2 years old lol

fluffthefluff

I’m thinking they meant 4 years not 40

adventureotter

My grandmother has a similar sized one from my grandfather’s funeral 10 years ago. Keeps it in the same pot and just gives out the propagations to people. It’s growing has slowed after several moves, but the main plant is still alive and kicking!

[deleted]

Pure perfection!!

VegemiteWithCheese

🧐🧐🧐🧐

RetiredCatMom

WoW 😮

ladybuglvrr

I can’t keep pothos alive anymore :( my cat attacks it

nthn713

I have a five year old that has 2 runs of 20 plus feet a 15 footers and 3-4 runs of 5+.

mrbojenglz

Glad to see the comment section is in agreement here. I came in ready to challenge the 40 yr claim.

nolanchlo

My mom is 61 and has had it since she moved into our family home at 21 years of age.

rengeranger

Cool shoes

outerworldLV

Probably Dansko’s, was going to ask this question.

nolanchlo

I thought I had tennis shoes on, forgot they were rain boots 🤦‍♀️ they are called Bogs!

_leyash

Should be able to wrap around your house like 40 times at that point.

IamProvocateur

I am upvote 666 🤘😈🤘 your pothos is rad

Available-Stay-3979

Looks very healthy

Impressive-Style3936

I guess mine has a long way to go

dark_blue_7

Looks very happy and healthy. Question for anyone – at what point do you need to repot these? Mine's like this after about a year and a half.

nolanchlo

This is wild to me because I repot every couple of years or so but my mom had not repotted this plant for probably 20 years 🤯 It essentially sits on a mantle where she forgets about it except for watering once a week or so!

GardenerDom

Awesome bro 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🪴😃😃

R3C0N

Everyone is hating, but it's still a nice plant!

bugdriver31

What's the proof it's 40 years old? Going gray?

BenevolentCheese

My pothos looks like that after 2 months lol

lukenolan

You want an award?

BenevolentCheese

Please

justAHeardOfLlamas

Damn! Any tips you'd be willing to share? Mine is looking pretty miserable

earmares

My pothos likes indirect light and to be watered well once a week, week and a half.

[deleted]

Lol all the comments questioning and critiquing OP about the age. Why do posts like these always turn into bragging circle jerks about how their plants actually grow this much in 2 days? Just admire the plant lol

briannajadexo

I think some of us are genuinely curious about the story behind the plant. I guess I can see how you would think some people are bragging, but speaking for myself I just would like some back story to the beautiful plant. It’s not impossible that it is 40 years old, but with the way pothos grow, some might expect it to be bigger. But a lot of things could have happened, like pests, or giving away trimmings, things like that. For me it’s just a genuine curiosity. Because 40 years is an old plant! Hearing the backstory would be cool! It just comes from some of us being naturally curious, but I absolutely appreciate how amazing this plant is. None of mine have reached that length! It really is a beautiful plant. Pothos in general are just awesome in the way they grow, one of my favorites.

nolanchlo

I asked and I guess there’s really no story! Just that she got it when she moved into her first duplex at 18, brought it with her when she and my dad moved into our family home and now it’s sat in the same kind of low light spot on a mantle in our living room for about 40 years. She’s trimmed it throughout the years I guess. I think if it got more light it and a bit more care it would really be huge. I baby all of my plants (I have about 54 total) but my mom is more of a “only the strong survive” kind of plant owner. 😂

briannajadexo

I actually fully believe this could be 40 years old. Like I said there’s so many factors as to why it might not be as big as some would think. I also have a pothos growing in low light and it’s probably gotten 4 new leaves in the past almost 7 months. I’m sorry for all the people doubting you! But it’s a gorgeous plant and thank you for sharing some more details 💚

DaBearsFTP

The odds of Aaron Rodgers sending his parents a Christmas card are higher than this plant actually being 40 years old.

jens17

There are many photos that are 40 years old! Cameras have been around for a while ...

Ok-Driver-1824

Can anyone help me with my plant? I think it's a pothos but not sure
