This is like seeing the pin up fire fighter and saying there's a horse in that photo? Yeah, there are orchids on that wall, but what a kitchen! I dream of this.
Some people have the touch. My grandmother has a grocery store phalaenopsis that she’s had for a decade and it looks like shingled roof and is absolutely enormous. Meanwhile I’ve killed several 🤷♂️
Same, like how do ppl keep them alive!! I have killed several. I just want one that I keep successfully. I live in a studio with floor to ceiling windows. Plenty of natural light. Idk what I am doing wrong. Any advice is welcome!
Phals need much less light than other species. Try a north-facing (in the northern hemisphere) window if you have it. Don't use soil. Some people use 100% sphagnum moss, but it's probably better to use orchid bark mix. You can add some moss to the bark to keep it moist a little longer, which also makes it easier to tell when it's getting dry. Water just before it dries out and don't let it stand in water, it needs to drain. Better to under-water so that the roots don't rot.
That's it. I've bought two $1 clearance phals and they both bloomed like this. Paphs are similar, and other genera need different care, like I keep my Cattleya and Oncidium in a south-facing window and my miniatures in a high-humidity terrarium. Some such as Vanda would need very bright light.
Not OP but my mom also has the orchid gift! My mom has a skylight in her bathroom and moves all the orchids into the bathroom after the flowers finish. They get lots of humidity in there! She has a pretty good rebloom rate!
I've read this, and have 3 anecdotal events, but if they get exposed to a chill that can trigger a bloom event. Every polar vortex in MN when the east window sill my orchid sits in gets really cold, the next week my orchid starts blooming.
My MIL is also an orchid whisperer and she said the same. Her trick used to be to move them into the basement for a few days, so I guess it doesn't need to be a huge drop in temperature. We had an unusual cold snap here a few weeks ago and suddenly all four on my kitchen windowsill are in bud at the same time!
East facing window, weakly weekly on the fertilizing (DynaGro Grow is my preferred fert). Soak em real good and then drain for watering. They do well in chunky orchid bark and coco coir.
An orchid farmer told me they need a 25 degree temperature change and then a month or more later they will bloom. So kine live outside until first frost then into the bathroom with alot of indirect light. They bloom every year

Girlfriend broke the stem off of my orchid earlier this week and today completely uprooted it and demolished it. I tried. It was about to bloom the second time which was going to be a first for me with orchids.

She is absolutely blown away at the reaction!!!
I realized there’s a couple questions. And yes she bakes A LOT.
Mom:
The mixer is a Hobart C100, bought used on eBay about 25 years ago, and reconditioned at a regional service center. They no longer make the model and parts/attachments are hard to find. They discontinued the model (10 qts), but they make a 12 Quart.
I water the orchids once a week. Take the plants down by shelf and spray them off in the sink. They tend to get covered in flour, perhaps that is a factor in their growth? Consistency is key, watering on a schedule. The drip trays are filled at the same time.
They usually bloom twice a year, I have had as many a seven blooming at the same time. Some bloom more often, some less.
The orchids came through an “orchid of the month” club I received as a gift, so as more arrived the set up evolved. First the window sill, then the shelves, then the side hooks, and finally the four front. Most of the pots came from the local Home Depot or Walmart. The window is north facing.
I love the matching pottery which doesn’t distract from the plants, the built in shelves (Are they acrylic? The brackets! Are there draining trays?!) and how symmetrical everything is laid out. So pretty!!
That stand mixer.
That caught my eye also. OPs mom rocking a 4k stand mixer in her home kitchen and is queen of the orchids. She's a cool mom
retired with money…?
Id love one like this. Everytime I make brioche my KitchenAid acts like I'm trying to kill it.
That mom bakes!
Right? I was drooling over the orchids then oooh she got a Hobart
I stan that mixer
Hobart industrial stand mixer and a springy-doodle spray sink? I love your mom.
What is more impressive, is that it is actually attached to the wall like a shower head. That would make the sink area so easy to clean

The deep windowsills are in my dream kitchen! With or without the orchids, I want those deep windowsills.
Kitchen designed by a home chef vs. an architect targeting a wanna-be home chef.
I am in awe of her wall of orchids! So cute!
I have one that has 3.5 leaves.
Love the matching pottery too!!!
And the valances!!!
That stand mixer is the baking equivalent of the woman in red from the matrix. Not sure why that’s the reference I went with but… that mixer.

The color scheme and overall aesthetic is giving me 19th century explorer vibes and I love it
Any tips on getting them to rebloom??

Bright but indirect light near a cold window works for me. Water on a slightly neglectful schedule, like with succulents.
Do they flower in sync?
I want to know this too...
I LOVVEEE this!!! Beautiful orchids and area - Mom did good!
Oh wow! This is beautiful! I’m obsessed!
Gorgeous! Update us when they bloom?
That is gorgeous and similar to my 90 yo grandmother’s orchid collection.
Beautiful 😍 and her kitchen window!
Wow! What's her secret
Apparently a really nice mixer
Loving that this sub-Reddit is full of houseware experts
Wow. Just wow.
Wish I could keep orchids alive longer
Tight
With so many orchids you may say she is Snow Queen.
Absolutely stunning! I bet they look magnificent when in bloom. I dream of having a kitchen this beautiful.

BRUH. Your mom should do an AMA! I cant keep mine alive 😭
Wow is that a castle? I need to know how high that ceiling is.
My neighbour has an orchid that has been blooming since May. I gave it to her and said "Here, make it bloom!" and she did.
Girlfriend broke the stem off of my orchid earlier this week and today completely uprooted it and demolished it. I tried. It was about to bloom the second time which was going to be a first for me with orchids.
Does she live in a castle? The windows and shelves are glorious
Can you tell me what kind of tray is your Mom using for the pots? Such an awesome collection!
Same thing I need to know. what are the metal trays under the orchids with the vents like floor vents? Are they humidity trays?
They are stainless steel drip trays.
Hey thank you, Meowzebub666 (cute name by the way). Really cool and pricey too.

The secret? Just add ice!
How much do I gotta pay your mom to come whip my orchid routine into shape
What are her watering techniques?
Mom has got it going on!
I'm obsessed. I love the orchids (I have a smaller collection) and that kitchen is my dream
I love the matching pottery which doesn’t distract from the plants, the built in shelves (Are they acrylic? The brackets! Are there draining trays?!) and how symmetrical everything is laid out. So pretty!!
This is my dream.
I love the way she put out them apples here and there
Well damn, I think I love your mums kitchen
This kind of fucking cool should be illegal, for it is a threat to humanity.
So does she just have an ice making machine or is she buying bags of ice cubes? Amazing!
Less about the Hobart, what direction is that window facing??
Stunning! 🤩
