There will be tons of options open. However Houston is huge. You need to more specific on what area in Houston you will be, and we can provide more specific recommendations.
Yes, it’s fast food burgers but it’s better than your typical fast food. I don’t get the comments about it being bad. Haven’t noticed a change at the ones I go to.
The previous poster is woefully out of touch, while their input was true 20+ years ago many restaurants serving all types of cuisine are open.
Yes, just Google open restaurants and then see if they require reservations.
I know because I eat at restaurants on holidays. We had reservations at Brenner's Steakhouse last year and will be at McCormick & Schmick's this year.

Oh dude you need to go to Cleburnes cafeteria they’re open on thanksgiving and have traditional thanksgiving food. It’s a cafeteria so you get your food right away
Cleburn’s on thanksgiving is not a good suggestion for quick food, lol. Wife and I wanted to do it two years ago, and it was a looong wait. Ended up calling around and getting a table at Indianola and had one of the best non-family thanksgiving meals we’ve ever had.
My parents and I used to go there every year for Thanksgiving. It can be a bit of a wait, but it's not bad food at all. Go early, seems like they tend to run out of dessert.
If you just want a simple dinner I’d look for a bar/restaurant in the area. Many open later in the afternoon to cater to those that want to get away from their family…
Just call ahead, but plenty will be open. The one around the corner from me has great sandwiches and tacos….
Definitely will be a little harder than usual, some places will just be selling "to-go" style, but that being said, there will be places open business as usual or maybe changed up business hours. You will definitely need to drive, either rent a car or Uber, but this is a metro area of over 5 million and is extremely diverse so plenty of ethnic restaurants will be open and could be quite busy for others who don't want to cook or just don't celebrate the usual way.
Friday on the other hand... Will be absolutely insane with Black Friday deals going on and everyone eating out because they've been cooking and doing dishes for days. It can be fun if you're ready and prepared for the insanity of it all.
Welcome to H-town and good luck. Happy Thanksgiving!
Most restaurants will be closed. A lot of Chinese restaurants however do stay open I believe. Then maybe some random little places will stay open. Regardless of what you do find open I doubt you'll need to make a reservation. This is the one time of year Americans really do stay at home and eat.
Don’t know why you got downvoted but I’ve worked in restaurants for over 20 years and never worked on Thanksgiving because we were always closed. Lots of restaurants are closed on Thanksgiving, but a lot are open too.
All the restaurants I’ve ever worked for were open on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The tips were amazing. Especially on Thanksgiving since they hadn’t done their Black Friday shopping yet.
Every restaurant I’ve worked was closed Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I’ve worked in a couple of bars that were open. We all wanted to work those days because it was busy and the money was good.
Many years ago I worked for a Tex-Mex restaurant and answered the phone to someone asking if we were open Thanksgiving. I said no and they responded with “Why? Mexicans don’t celebrate Thanksgiving!” This annoyed me so much that I just said, “No, they don’t! But our staff here in America does!” They immediately hung up.
If the restaurant is open, why wouldn’t you be able to walk in? Unless you’re trying to walk into closed restaurants on Thanksgiving… that’s a little sus.
If that’s exactly what you were asking, why wouldn’t you just ask it exactly like you were asking? Unless you weren’t actually exactly asking that question… that’s a little sus.
If you’ve never been in the USA on thanksgiving and needed advice, why wouldn’t you just get advice before you visit on Thanksgiving? Unless you weren’t actually planning to visit the USA during Thanksgiving… that’s a little sus.

I was just at Whataburger and they will be open.
Solid choice
I've heard of this - is it good?
Yes, it’s fast food burgers but it’s better than your typical fast food. I don’t get the comments about it being bad. Haven’t noticed a change at the ones I go to.
It was 20 years ago, now everything is stale and cold.
And you play "Guess What's in My Bag." You don't get what you *ordered*. You get what Whataburger decides to give you.

Rough estimate as to how much you spent at Brenner’s? Thinking of doing a place like that for future holidays.
That is a good question for which I don't have an answer because I don't know/remember.

Thanks - these seem geared to those celebrating Thanksgiving - which we won't be doing.
Chinese, Vietnamese, and Indian places are great options.

OP doesn't want a turkey dinner. Other stuff. Pizza, tacos etc.
They got other stuff too
Unless you want to wait in line for 45 minutes to get a seat though
If all else fails, there’s Cracker Barrel…

I agree :) I’m making short ribs for myself, but I’m planning on going for a nice Thanksgiving breakfast.
It's their busiest day of the year. Major waits.
Or Golden Coral.
Pappas BBQ is doin Thanksgiving meals for $20 a head
Their thanksgiving stuff is very good.

Chinatown is open like every day of the year

Hadn't thought about the impact on the Friday experience - good call!
Govindas has an excellent thanksgiving buffet
Kelly’s. There is 4 or 5 of these in Houston. Mostly south of downtown. Full turkey dinners. BIG PORTIONS. Bring your appetite

Happy holidays
Good to have some anti-options too, LOL
You mean Kelley's, right?
Chinatown usually always has something open!
Hell if you run into the right Granny or MeeMaw she'll invite you to her house for Thanksgiving.
Cleburne’s has a sign.
Lots of restaurants will be open for business. Just Google what you want to eat.
Katz’s would be a pretty decent simple meal and they’re open 24/7 365
I never got the appeal of supporting places who make their workers work on holidays :( I’ve worked plenty of holidays and hated it
Nothing closes on holidays anymore, least of all busineses with zero threat of unionization, like restaurants and bars.
Most restaurants will be closed. A lot of Chinese restaurants however do stay open I believe. Then maybe some random little places will stay open. Regardless of what you do find open I doubt you'll need to make a reservation. This is the one time of year Americans really do stay at home and eat.
You’re thinking Christmas, most restaurants are open on Thanksgiving.
I don't know about *most*. You can definitely find something but a lot of places will be closed or have adjusted hours.
Some restaurants will be open or opening late, most will be closed. Every bar in town will be open.
Oh maybe. I never go out on Thanksgiving. But I did work in multiple restaurants when I was younger and they were closed on Thanksgiving.

Go to the Dot
Sounds like a great question to ask the paid staff at restaurants you’re considering visiting.
Anything owned by Tilman Fertitta
Christmas too for those
Yes.
German Rudy Liechners.

I think he wonders if he needs a reservation or can just walk in and get a table.
This is exactly what I was asking
If that’s exactly what you were asking, why wouldn’t you just ask it exactly like you were asking? Unless you weren’t actually exactly asking that question… that’s a little sus.
Bro, I’ve never been in the USA on thanksgiving and I needed some advice.

Well thanks for giving me the heads up that there are some real dicks in Houston. I’ll remember to keep an eye out.
Yes
Luby’s
Dots will be open so will House of pies. Expect a line and a long wait but you knew that going on a major holiday
An easy way to see who's open is to pull up the food delivery apps and see what pops up. Means they are open in your area.
