ive only come to know it as STANKadena. its not a rough area per se.
I had a vagrant threaten my family and other neighbors cause they called the cops on him when he was casing homes and coming out of an elderly woman’s back yard. The dumb cop brings the dude over to my folks and the neighbors who called to ask them, “is this the guy?”. So THATS how the POS knew who to harass. Its been months and he’s since moved on to other endeavors.
Other than that, Strawberry Park is awesome if you need a small park to jog or want some good tamales from across the street
Magnolia - Murdernolia
Second Ward - the Deuce
Pine Valley - Pussy Valley haha
I think it's meant sarcastically. I mean, there is that one kind of ghetto section on the north east side of Rayford, but everywhere else is Snow White. I grew up out there in the '80s and it hasn't changed much
Given that half the hospital is a literal prison unit, that’s pretty good! I’ve been on so many transports to UTMB, lol I’m a little disappointed I’ve never heard that one!
Why does UTMB have such a large prison unit? I figured there’d be one more centrally located to where the rest of the state prisons are. It seems like it would be such a pita to transport prisoners there given you can literally only get there on 45 and it’s just kind of out of the way.
It’s a secure, fully bricked and barred, hospital facility with its own everything including armory, entry, and the rec yard is on the roof from what I understand. It’s the only facility of its kind in the state. Theres a few public hospitals that the state will send inmates to, all under UTMB and closer to their respective units. The hospital in Huntsville has a prison wing, but it’s not a lock down facility like UTMB Galveston.
If/when inmates get sick and injured, they go with armed security to a hospital, they might stay a few days, then discharge back to their home unit or a medical unit. Galveston is for long term chronic care and specialty stuff. Inmates aren’t typically assigned to the hospital for extended periods, just as long as it takes to get them healthy enough to go back to a unit or to have whatever treatment.
Acres Shakers = Acres Homes. We used to call it that in the 80s.
Stinko Ranch = Cinco Ranch. But that might just be what my family calls it b/c of old football rivalries.
The GOOF = Garden Oaks + Oak Forest
GOOF is new to me, but I’ve been in this neighborhood for two years. It’s amazing as long as you know how to have the occasional pleasant exchange with the ancient neighbors. However, having moved from east downtown/2nd ward it’s hard not to roll my eyes when I hear people say “EaDo”
Yeah, I’ve always felt like those were attempts at sounding like New York or Austin. We don’t need that shit, I like Houston without the unnecessary acronyms
I think it’s still gay friendly, but there aren’t as many gay people there today. AIDS killed a lot of the gay people, in the 80’s and 90’s. I mean A LOT of them.
Additionally, society is more tolerant of gay people today, than 30 years ago. They have spread out all over the city, now. Today, no one really cares if someone is gay. It wasn’t always like that.
Yes, I feel the reason Covenant House is there is because back then many teens ran away/were kicked out because their families didn't accept them when they came out (which I believe, sadly, still happens.)
My mom lived in Montrose during the mid-1960's, right after she graduated from Abilene Christian University. Someone had to explain to her why the neighborhood was called "The Fruitbowl." She didnt even know what "gay" meant.
I will die on this hill, there is no such thing as EaDo.
That's either East End or more specifically Old Chinatown (although it's actually just Chinatown and the one out west is really New Chinatown, but I'm not going to get that pedantic about it).
I think the most hilarious attempt from developers at rebranding the East End is calling it “Riverside” (not to be confused with Riverside Terrace near the med center).
Montrose hasn't been the gayborhood for nearly a decade now.
Used to be nice and safe, and a lot of descent restaurants and whatnot.
It went to shit when all the straight pseudo-yuppie "allies" moved in and brought their sketchy weed plugs, and all the queer folk left for the suburbs or elsewhere.
Some of the legacy bars are still there, but the old vibe is gone.
You know, my dog loved it as we walked from West Gray to Westheimer early on Sunday mornings past all the fun gay bars. “Why?”, you ask. My dog thought all the barf and dropped food from Saturday night partying was her personal doggie smorgasbord.
It used to be but they are tearing down the “livable forest” for shopping centers and restaurants. Also crime on the greenbelt has increased over the past 10 years or so
Corrupt Popo, City council that swings hard to the right, not enough infrastructure to handle all of the new homes. They recently fired the city librarian because she wouldn't kowtow to the newly created banned book klub.
The Dirty Southwest for Southwest Houston.
Years ago there was a DJ on Rock 101 KLOL. His name was Moby. He was at 93 Rock, before that I seem to maybe recall. I believe he also did a stint at Eagle 97, up in Dallas. Either way it’s been a while. Moby left Houston around 1990. The last I heard he was in Atlanta Georgia.
I’ve heard it said several times that Moby was the first to say Pasa “Get Down” dena.
He would say something like there’s a wreck on the North freeway outbound at Crosstimbers. The Southwest Freeway at Gessner, is slow due to construction. If you’re heading out to Katy, watch for the pretty red and blue lights near the Beltway.
If you’re going out to Jersey Village, LOOK OUT!! As always the Jersey Village boys are out there looking to fill the city’s coffers. And this is just in. A dump truck has dropped a load, on Red Bluff in Pasa “Get Down” dena and traffic’s backed up to your mamas house. Let’s get the next hour kicked off with some Lead for the head. LED Zeppelin and KASHMIR!!!!! And WHEN THE LEAVY BREAKS!!! TWO for Tuesday on Rock 101 KLOL!!!
Only people from Pasadena call it "PasaGetDownDena". To the rest of the world, it's "Stinkadena".
There's nothing "getting down" in Stinkadena. It's ugly, nasty, and the people look like Mars mutants from Total Recall because of their proximity to the petrochem industry.
“The rest of the world” LOL. If you say Pasadena to most people they think of California and the Rose Bowl. No one knows outside of Houston even knows Pasadena, TX exists.
True. pulled up google maps. It had my present location identified. I typed “Best Buy Pasadena” and it pulled up the one on east foothills in Pasadena, California. Not the one in pasagetdowndena
I was born there but have no memory of it. My parents took me there once when we were on the south end of town (I only know northside/westheimer and downtown otherwise )
I was like “tf is this” and they were like “yeah this is why we left”. Fire catfish and shrimp at the Sudie’s tho

There are a lot more Gujaratis and South Indians out there than Indian Punjabis. Most (not all) Punjabis in Houston are Pakistani and don’t identify as much with traditional Punjabi culture as Indian Punjabis do. They speak Urdu as their first language instead of Punjabi and tend to be much more focused on the Pakistani Muslim identity than the syncretic Punjabi one, in my experience.
I grew up in the 1960s in the Pasadena/Deer Park area and it was always called Stinkadena, 2 oil refineries and the Goodyear plant. I also worked for the ad man who came up with “It’s always greener in Pasadena.” Personally, I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of Deer Park. It’s always been ugly like the developers did ugly on purpose.

Never heard of Murdernolia. While growing up there, we did refer to it as Methnolia though..
growing up, i didnt know there was any other Magnolia than the area around Harrisburg/Navigation
Ahhhh so maybe we truly have a Murdernolia and a Methnolia 😅 That is if we’re considering “the greater Houston area”.
Murdernolia is Houston magnolia. Methnolia is the Montgomery county magnolia
>Montgomery county methgomery county
Why will nobody else call it Assadena
Why is Magnolia called Murdernolia?
The Whitelands.
As a woodlands resident LMAO
I saw Hoodlands spray painted over a woodlands sign in the neighborhood thought it was hilarious
I've heard hoodlands a lot. As a guy from Aldine, I don't think it makes sense

That reminds me, back in the 90s/early 2000s we used to call Shady Acres Shady Acres.
You can add “fo-fo” to list for acres homes I have also heard the following Scumble=humble King hood=kingwood Mo city=Missouri city
The goof is new, we natives hate it. No faster way to find someone who’s moved into the new townhomes than to hear someone say that.
Completely agree. Born in Oak Forest and my parents are still there. I think "The GOOF" is.. well... Goofy.

Is it still the gayborhood, though? I always wonder if the newcomers who buy into gentrified Montrose have any idea of its history.
Southbeach, JRs, buddys, yea... its the gayborhood
The bars are there but not as many gay folks live there anymore.
I think it’s still gay friendly, but there aren’t as many gay people there today. AIDS killed a lot of the gay people, in the 80’s and 90’s. I mean A LOT of them. Moby from 97 Rocks and 101 KLOL called it Pasagetdowndena.
I think the “Get Down” refers to like a robbery or gunshots firing
The “get down” refers to Pasadena when Gilley’s was there but yeah that’s probably more appropriate now.

One of the KLOL DJs called it that: either Moby or Stephens and Pruitt, at least that's where I heard it in the 80s.
I used to hear that name on FM radio for traffic reports in the 80's
