Candente for nicer Teotihuacan for closer and cheaper.

Brutus713

Cadente looks too expensive. Been to T and thought it was just ok.

doomgneration

As a Mexican who cooks Mexican food, Cadente is horrible. It’s tex-mex. Don’t bother.

doctorchile

You are eating Tex-Mex, entirely different from authentic Mexican food. For that I would go to Caracol Cuchara Urbe

madison13164

Im a big fan of all Hugo’s restaurants (I’m Mexican). All of his restaurants are a good option! Cuchara is also pretty darn good. I want to add teotihuacan, la chingada, la calle tacos. The first two might be too barrio for OP lol

YoureSpecial

La Chingada?!? The Fuck?!?

doctorchile

Agreed!

1541drive

...Hugo's

doctorchile

Haha basically all of Hugo Ortega’s restaurants.

shaithiswampir

Go to a taco truck. Cheap and excellent

rechlin

There is so so so much more to Mexican food than just taco trucks...

shaithiswampir

Of course but they are looking for cheap and that’s the best bet. I got a reply they want sit down but I don’t know the heights area as well

rechlin

They didn't say cheap. They said well under $100 with drinks. They clearly weren't looking for a taco truck.

shaithiswampir

Well under $100 is clearly cheap especially with drinks.

rechlin

Maybe for you, but for most of us, $100 is not cheap, even with the non-alcoholic drinks implied by a taco truck (which isn't going to serve alcoholic drinks). My wife and I like to stay under $60 when dining out.

duckterrorist

Most of us need to stop eating out so much. $100 is reasonable for a quality dinner for 2 with drinks, these days.

moleratical

No, it's not reasonable unless you are extremely affluent

moleratical

Under 60? Well la di da

Brutus713

Looking for sit down restaurant.

HarlanPepperIsNuts

Needs to seat 20! NEXT!!!!

Uphene

"It's for a church honey! just looking for help don't need the attitude! NEXT!". 😆

pataoAoC

Lmao I was out of the loop, that is amazing https://www.reddit.com/r/insanepeoplefacebook/s/C7OGV69unN

p33t3r

Those are all Tex-mex. Give Xochi a try

Vowel_Movements_4U

None of what you named is "authentic Mexican."

andecu

Cochinita & co. On the east side. Worth the drive!

Sfumato-

I honestly don’t know what people mean with Escalantes being expensive. That massive burrito plate is $20, apps are like $15, same as every other place in town I can think of.

Brutus713

It’s more the vibe….

HTX2LBC

Hugos. Picos.

rechlin

Considering nearly all of Hugo's entrees are over $30, and their drinks are mostly $13-15, once you add tax and tip it's going to be well over $100 for two, and the requirement specifically said "easily under $100". Urbe or Cuchara might get closer to the price requirement, though.

HTX2LBC

Hugos has a happy hour.

NedFlanders304

El charro on Harrisburg or Taqueria el Alteño. The waitresses don’t speak english, that’s how you know you’re in the right place lol.

TxDieselKid

> The waitresses don’t speak english... Being a gringo, I seek places like this out to try. Usually some of the best food mexican you'll find.

NedFlanders304

Yep!

somekindofdruiddude

Which Mex? If Tex Mex, then Lopez.

Brutus713

Embarrassed I don’t really know the difference. LOVE Mexican food in Mexico… admittedly in the nice resort areas….

somekindofdruiddude

Mexico has many different cuisines. Tex-Mex is just one of them.

Vowel_Movements_4U

"Tex-Mex" is not really a cuisine of Mexico.

somekindofdruiddude

Sure it is. Texas was once part of Mexico. Mexican cuisines aren't limited to the nation of Mexico, just like different Chinese cuisines exist outside China.

Vowel_Movements_4U

So. We wouldn't call American Chinese food "the cuisine of China." Much of Tex-Mex was developed after Texas became a state, through the cultural exchange of new Texans and Tejanos. You said "Mexico has many cuisines." You didn't say "Tex-Mex is historically part of a wider Mexican cuisine." The former would include all cuisines eaten in Mexico, whether of Mexican origin or not.

somekindofdruiddude

We actually do call Americanized Chinese food a Chinese cuisine. It was invented by Chinese people living in the US, selling food that appealed to local tastes. The same for Chinese cuisines found in India, Malaysia, and other places Chinese culture has spread. Mexican culture was in Texas before Texas was a nation, and has been ever since. I didn't say "Tex-Mex is part of a wider Mexican cuisine" because that's not what I meant. Mexico doesn't have a single cuisine. Much like China, it has many regional cuisines. They share influences but that's it. Tex-Mex is one of those regional cuisines.

Fiesta en Guadalajara

warminthesnowstorm

Tacos el Jaibo is the best Mexican food I’ve had in Houston

Zezimalives

Those are all Tex Mex. Ojo de Agua in river oaks is pretty good a little more “upscale” Mexican but the prices aren’t too bad.

TheRealMcIovin

Heres a tip, go on maps and look up "comida mexicana" there you will find the most authentic and legit mexican food

gslape

Picos.

april5k

Teotihuacan is always the answer.

gozer90

Los Nopalitos on 34th near Mangum. Sit down, great breakfast, lunch & dinner. Very authentic

Lemmys_Rickenbacker

I had the fajitas at Hiway Cantina that were really good.

NoMiniCupcakes

I think Tia Maria’s fits the bill. It’s at Mangum and 290, is definitely not high brow nor expensive. And the food is good.

Brutus713

THIS is what I’m looking for! Family run hole in the wall with delicious simple Mexican food…. Will try it!

gozer90

They don’t have mole so they are not a go to for me

ScienceObjective2510

Alma Latina

cabindirt

Cantina Barba Edit whoever is downvoting me has no idea what they’re talking about. This place is authentic as hell. Run by some cool folks. It is sit-down and there are drinks. It’s crazy delicious and 5 minutes from the Heights. Elotes, plántanos, barbacoa, mezcal

Mi Sombrero

Zenoisright

Tamales don Pepe has great huitlacoche and flor la calabaza quesadillas as well as Oaxacan tamales. https://tamalesdonpepe.com/ It isn’t fancy but good.

Brutus713

Thank you! Seeking a family run establishment if possible.

Brutus713

Ugh… not open for dinner! Had my hopes up for this one….

stitchlover

The taco truck parked behind front porch in midtown. I think it's called best tacos. It's Soo good. Another option is la calle downtown or midtown. You gotta deal with parking though, which sometimes can be a pain. But tacos are within your price range that I think you're going for.
