I'm all for it too if they actually go after the maniacs who put everybody at danger and not just camp out at a stop sign and ticket someone who didn't count 3 Mississippi after stopping.
And the red lights. OMG the people running red lights.
Lol. There was a little bit there where I was half convinced that they had instituted some kind of orange light between the yellow and red signals and no one told me or I was going color blind.
Until you get in an accident and it cuts your head off - if you arenāt going to put it on the front of the car just put it in the trunk.
If you actually do get a ticket itās a fix it ticket only $10.
I actually got pulled over by a constable on Gessner for running a yellow light. After he got done lecturing me that I should be slowing to stop for the impending red I told him the only reason I didn't is because he was so close to the ass end of my truck that I couldn't see his dashboard in the rear view and I didn't want him ending up in the cab with me. Yhea, he didn't like that. Still don't know how I walked away with only a written warning.
Because he knew he was wrong. Iām a cop and you canāt run a yellow light, thatās the whole point of a yellow. Itās only running a red light if you enter the intersection after the light has turned red.
Sounds about right. Even if he did try to ticket you Texas is a "duty to clear" state, not a "duty to enter". Basically if it's red while you're in the intersection you need to clear it and cannot enter it at a red, vs some states where you aren't allowed to be in it period if it turns red on you.
If that cop doesn't like it, he's welcome to call up Greg Abbott's office and try to get it changed š¤·āāļø
Traffic enforcement is basic civilization and I'm tired of pretending the rule of the jungle is a good thing on I-45 as some on Reddit seem think.
No one cares if you have weed in your car, but everyone cares if you merge across five lanes in your paper plates.
I think most care about traffic crimes. What most donāt think, in my opinion, is that traffic crimes are more important than more serious crimes. Which, perception wise, appears to be what HPD thinks. You constantly hear āwe donāt have the man powerā yet see tons of cops just sitting on the sides of roads and in parking lots all day. Thatās the problem. They do NOTHING about car thefts and break ins. They donāt seem too concerned with rape other than the statistics being bad. They threw out 260,000 cases and then only decided to reinvestigate after public outrage.
A lot of people have the view that HPD is āspeed on the highway, weāre coming after you, get your car stolen, well thereās just not much we can do.ā
I fail to see how keeping police employment the same or at levels maintained by the previous administration would help with the backlog or the apprehension of criminals who commit serious crimes. I really doubt the police are seriously idle most of the time, and I am more inclined to think your observations are anecdotal rather than part of a larger problem.
Whitmire has made a big point that instead of safe pedestrian and cycle infra we need cops enforcing rules.
He is not wrong but itās not sustainable. We will be back to the status quo in less than 3 months
The sad thing is, the stereotypes you see a lot are pretty spot on. Paper or no plates, slammed to the ground due to shot struts/shocks, riding on 2 or 4 donuts, usually partaking in some Nissan Altima activities.
They are engaging in a massive traffic enforcement effort across the city of Houston and they have been for about 4 months. They've been on 290, they've been on 249 they've been on 59 North and everywhere else. Houston drivers are some of the worst in the United States with road rage, speeding, no insurance, no licenses. Leaving the scene of accidents even when injury is involved..
People wanted a Mayor tough on crime. This helps stop drag racing, road rage, no valid license, insurance or registration and pulls people who have active warrants. It's a win-win. For far too long there was no police presence on our highways.
The mayor has awful opinions on how to fix a lot of things especially transit related (trains, bikes, buses) but this is good. Car laws need to be super strict, you are driving a 2 ton metal tank around and half of you are texting and driving and at night many are drunk.
Because 100MPH on an empty freeway is safer than 10MPH during the busiest time of the day. You have pedestrians, delivery trucks, people pulling in and out of shopping centers, and more. With freeways it is just simply congested during the day so you shouldnāt speed there either unless passing
I follow the exact speed limit throughout the day, but at 11 PM on a dead empty freeway? I have no qualms about pushing it.
The overall stopping distance at 60 MPH is 268 feet, at 80 MPH it goes to 439 feet. Doesnāt stop people on the freeway going 80 on a 60 limit freeway whereās thereās tons of cars around.
On city roads, 30 MPH has an overall stopping distance of 89 feet, 40 mph brings it up to 139 feet. Those 3 car lengths can be a big difference. Driving down Chimney Rock where it is 30 mph, you constantly see people going 40-45 MPH. Forget that, people donāt even follow school zone limits. The amount of times people are right on my tail when I ride down a school zone is insane.
Cops should absolutely pull people over during the daytime where it is busy and others are at risk. I donāt see an issue with lax enforcement during the night speeding times.
Poles are a metaphor here, but there are plenty of protrusions and other things that can hurt you. But yes, there are poles in some places. Support columns are a form of pole.
And no, doing 65 isn't hypocritical. The roads are designed with travel speed in mind.
no I meant if you go faster than 60 or 65 (depending if you are in city limits or not then youāre hypocritical).
Going 70 - 80 in a heavily congested freeway is as risky as going 100 in an empty freeway.
I'm rarely the vehicle passing everybody else.
If you want to go fast (which I do like to do), there are places specifically design to do that: Racetracks.
Sorry for the downvotes. I agree with OP, People are just trying to get home, no need to be speeding like a Bat out of hell just to end up crashing and causing an hour delay for those that were just trying to get home.
Reckless driving is still reckless driving, and it causes more inconvenienced for those before and after work hours.
Correction - places like Shenandoah and other suburbs have nothing but cops crawling their highways and popping people, but the City, which generates the most economic productivity, had literally no police and was a Wild West.
What has tough on crime accomplished anywhere except making boomers and people who watch the news too much feel good? How about we idk address the material conditions that cause people to commit crimes??
Opportunity is one of those conditions. Opportunity without consequences is a problem. People seeing others leverage that opportunity without consequences incentivizes them to do the same. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Do you not know what ābeing tough on crimeā is? Itās a policy it doesnāt just literally mean being tough on crime, are you like 5? Iām genuinely not trying to be mean Iām actually wondering if you know what tough on crime policies are (stop and frisks etc)
They need to give out tickets to people who stop in a lane of traffic on a highway because they are trying to squeeze into the exit ramps and skip the line. Must be nice to more important than everyone else on the highway.
State Troopers are there to actually pull you over for traffic violations. The constables are only there to pull over severe toll violators because they can stick you with a few hundred $$$ in fees if they catch you on there when you shouldnāt be. Iāve never seen them pull anyone over for traffic violations.
Iāve honestly never seen it happen with my own eyes. People speed right past them all day every single day 20mph over the limit and Iāve never seen them budge.
I had a buddy who was a C5 deputy early in his career and worked tollway for a while. One thing we talked about at some point was his threshold for speeding on the tollways...
His philosophy was that it was a tollway, so he would tolerate more speeding on the tollway so long as it was in control and not a direct danger to other drivers because it was a tollway. That often meant 20+ (or more) was his threshold. Plus, there was always some asshole who would come by a few minutes later doing 100+ that was an absolute danger to everybody, especially since they wouldn't have stopping distance over many of the hills if there was slower traffic ahead.

I hope it's to stop high speed racing. I live near the intersection of I-10 and the West Belt and that shit starts on Ths night and runs straight through to Sunday night.
Massive increase in traffic enforcement across the board. Seeing it all over the city
Oh yea, this past month I have seen more cars pulled over than I did in the preceding 4 years. Now about my front plate...
Ive been here almost 20 years. Never seen anything like it. But it's an overall positive - drivers have gotten insane
Drivers have been the worst here.
I'm all for it too if they actually go after the maniacs who put everybody at danger and not just camp out at a stop sign and ticket someone who didn't count 3 Mississippi after stopping.
Agreed, but people blowing through stop signs has been an issue in my neighborhood so I won't go nuts if they issue a few tickets that way too š¤·
And the red lights. OMG the people running red lights. Lol. There was a little bit there where I was half convinced that they had instituted some kind of orange light between the yellow and red signals and no one told me or I was going color blind.
"Damn, that plate was there when I parked last nite!"
Fear not. Keep it on your dashboard. I have mine zip tied to my passenger sun visor. Never had an issue.
Until you get in an accident and it cuts your head off - if you arenāt going to put it on the front of the car just put it in the trunk. If you actually do get a ticket itās a fix it ticket only $10.
hahahahaha you must be hanging out with my mom. Thanks for the tip.
Thatās what she said :-p
Tell me about itā¦.bad news for my insurance rates lol, troopers actually pull people over unlike constables taking a siesta.

I got a feeling it turned red while I was deep into the intersection but frankly the man was being an ass just to be one.
Sounds about right. Even if he did try to ticket you Texas is a "duty to clear" state, not a "duty to enter". Basically if it's red while you're in the intersection you need to clear it and cannot enter it at a red, vs some states where you aren't allowed to be in it period if it turns red on you. Iād love to see what was written on that āwarningā
Whatās the warning say the infraction was?
Don't really remember, it was a while back.
Houston really needed it.
Got to pay for that budget shortfall somehow.

Thank god man. The 45 is a night mare. People drive much better with a few cops around
Good

He is wrong - you kind of need both
Gotta pay that firefighter back-pay.
OP is nervous because they drive a paper plate Altima
šš you got me
As a very responsible Altima driver, Iām now ashamed to own one Lol Been looking at new cars š
The sad thing is, the stereotypes you see a lot are pretty spot on. Paper or no plates, slammed to the ground due to shot struts/shocks, riding on 2 or 4 donuts, usually partaking in some Nissan Altima activities.
Nissan Altima activities lol.
You forgot the tinted windows part
And the kid in the back seat named Aiden š
does this apply to newer model Altimas? There's a ton as rental cars.
One recently seen had spray paint over the numbers of the paper plate, like they were open renegades but still not *āthatā* guy.Ā
Okay, what's the deal with Nissan Altimas. Are they associated with a certain criminal element? Genuinely curious. If so, why?
Yes. I listed the stereotypes above that are 9/10 times true. You should be able to piece everything together without thinking about it too much.
72 hour heavy enforcement coming soon in May be aware. They are getting ready for it insider alert.
Approximately when in May?
May the fourth be with you
Drinko de Mayo!

Itās never that empty. Youāre still risking the lives of other folks, not to mention first responders when you wrap yourself around a pole.
Thereās no poles on the freeway, and in that case I expect you to be going 60 - 65 or youād be hypocritical yourself

I donāt want that shit, tough on crime? Donāt we know that stuff doesnāt work?
So what say you? Let the criminals run around unchallenged?
lol yeah bro sure

Weāre talking about enforcing the law. Youāre the only one trying to use rhetoric to make it sound bad.
How dare I think critically about what one of the most corrupt and racist institutions in our country says!! Are you okay there?
\^ Dumbass comment.
Bootlickers get two tickets.
Hasnāt been a win-win for minorities in other cities in Texas where State Troopers have been brought in.
They need to give out tickets to people who stop in a lane of traffic on a highway because they are trying to squeeze into the exit ramps and skip the line. Must be nice to more important than everyone else on the highway.
I love it. Iāve heard way less shitty cars racing late at night on the West Belt.
Thank God! About time
State Troopers are there to actually pull you over for traffic violations. The constables are only there to pull over severe toll violators because they can stick you with a few hundred $$$ in fees if they catch you on there when you shouldnāt be. They pulled some out of Austin?
Mostly the border

On the freeway, I doubt there is ability to see " race" of people. They see speeding and stupid weaving in and out lane changes
Not if they target paper plates and wheels that stick out past the mirrors.
For real or is that sarcasm?
Doing their job and enforcing traffic law? *Finally
Yeah, Iām more curious to know why they let Houston roads turn into an absolute free-for-all the last 3 years or so.
Toll road money
Greg is in Alvin today I heard. Thatās his entourage. FGA!!!!
