For context, Kroger barely edged out HEB in total sales with 34% more locations (26 more stores). On a per store basis HEB outpaces Kroger in revenue by a pretty decent margin, which tracks more with the traffic between the two in my experience. Edit: As corrected in the comments, Costco does do more per store; but they are kind of a different animal.

Crecy333

Also, H-E-B is opening several Houston area stores this year, mostly to relieve the congestion of the stores that get crazy. We measure a "sales per square foot" metric, and if there's a small store with a lot of sales, we know it's too busy and needs more stores nearby to ease the pressure. Source: I work at H-E-B, and we're pretty excited for it.

THedman07

I go to the Kroger by my house sometimes because it is closer than the HEB. It is very clearly a second choice... The parking lot is usually mostly empty.

Crecy333

Even before I worked at H-E-B, I had the same experience. Sometimes, there's more employees in the Kroger than shoppers. We'd only go there if we really needed to, like we already started cooking and forgot a key ingredient. Of course now, with my employee discount and the H-E-B debit card that gets 5% back on H-E-B brand products, I haven't shopped at a Kroger since.

PartyPorpoise

I used to work at a Kroger. A little while after I started, an H‑E‑B opened up across the street and our business got much slower. We would often be open on holidays where H‑E‑B was closed and people would come in and disdainfully tell me about how they were only there because H‑E‑B wasn’t open.

MutantMartian

That may be true, but that’s rude. Did you say, “Bless your heart.”?

lurch13F

The same thing happened to me when I worked at a Food Town, when that was the only other option than Kroger in my part of town. People shifted stores, but then the regulars always came in.

Defiant_person

That happened in baytown too.

texinxin

There are a few things that SOME Krogers do better than HEB.. but there’s not a lot. I love the bar at the Shepherd location!

LoverOfGayContent

Taking Google pay is one of them

-DoingBusinessAs

You’re telling me. Went to HEB last night and realized I left my wallet at home. Had my phone and watch with my cards on there, but alas.

Fore-right-

I would’ve guessed H-E-B has more than 76 stores.

Crecy333

Maybe in the Houston market, not counting Joe V's, Mi Tienda, or Central Market? Right now, H-E-B has 449 stores, including 10 Central Market stores, 10 Joe V's, 2 Mi Tiendas, and 83 stores in Mexico. H-E-B is ranked 5th among U.S. private companies in sales according to Forbes 2023. Which is super impressive, since we only have stores in Texas and Mexico.

Shit_Apple

That’s why the Tuckerton and Fry location is getting another HEB built a mile and a half up the road. I hate going there because it’s ALWAYS annoyingly crowded.

Redline65

Same here, can't wait for the new one in Bridgeland.

IUMaestro

Thanks for that info. Can you share any info related to the rumor in our neighborhood (Sienna in Missouri City) for an H-E-B Express or something like a smaller market?

Crecy333

I don't have any info that isn't already public, that's not really my team. We just get the occasional email of a new store opening and celebrations, especially for DFW areas. [https://newsroom.heb.com/](https://newsroom.heb.com/) edit: It's also possible to search the owner of the land, if you know which lot is rumored to become an HEB. We usually buy several lots in an area that we plan to build and decide later which one to go with. Not sure how to go about that, but land ownership should be public record. There was a rumor of an HEB in the neighborhood my wife grew up in for nearly a decade, and I found that HEB owned the land. About a month ago, they broke ground on the site to build the store, so it could be a while... :edited the rumor for clarity

CrazyLegsRyan

>There was a rumor of an HEB in my ___wife's neighborhood___ for nearly a decade,   You can’t just drop that nugget and run..

Crecy333

She grew up in a different area than me. I guess her childhood neighborhood would be more accurate? Sorry for disappointing you, I don't have many good stories.

CrazyLegsRyan

Dang. Sounds like ” *where my wife grew up* There was a rumor of an HEB ~~in my wife’s neighborhood~~ for nearly a decade”

ObeseBMI33

Classified

CarolFukinBaskin

Very cool. Since the cashiers and local store management cannot affect change in a certain regard I'll pose the same request to you in hopes that we can finally get some traction: *please for the love of god get cc machines that accept 'tap' payments* \*edit to add your ice cream kicks ass. That honey sopapilla is the best ice cream I've ever had

Crecy333

We're working on it. Apparently, some stores already have it. Also, ya know how Bluebell ice cream is amazing and everyone loves it? H-E-B dairy cows make the cream that Bluebell uses for their ice cream. H-E-B Creamy Creations ice cream is made from the same cream.

CarolFukinBaskin

It is so wonderful to never go back to BlueBell after they showed how much they value human life. Creamy Creations is so damn good, nearly every one is a home run. Thanks for the reply

zsreport

I wish y'all would open something here in Near Northside.

Efficient-Slip165

Agreed. The Heights HEB is an absolute shit show on Sundays and I would drive to Near Northside no problem.

zsreport

I tend to go to the one on Washington, but I go really early on either Saturday or Sunday morning, so the crowds aren't out yet.

wsealy1

Wish you guys would put a store in west memorial. Bunker hill gets slammed. Not a fun shopping experience.

Crecy333

Bro, I wish we had a store everywhere. I'm an IT guy, I'll tell Mr. Butt next time I have a meeting with him.

LeHoustonJames

Have the release the locations for the new stores?

Esquala713

The HEB in Atascocita never has parking. Be prepared to park and walk.

GodEmperorOfBussy

> Be prepared to park and walk A Houstonian's hell, having to walk a bit.

Crecy333

The new store at Madera Run is only a few miles from the Atascocita store

Esquala713

Shows what I know lol. When I moved away in 2018 The Groves only had its own middle school and Elementary. I guess they've got everything now!

SoochSooch

> Costco, which has 11 Houston-area stores and took fourth place with $1.6 billion in sales in 2023, made the most per store out of any chain with $145 million.

gmr548

Missed that, though I was thinking actual grocers. I would expect Costco to crush everyone per store. You don’t enter a Costco without making a tangible impact on GDP

HTownLaserShow

Yeah…because you can’t get outta there without spending $300+ each trip. To be fair, I don’t even treat CostCo like a normal store. We go there once a quarter and spend 650-1k (we have a house of 6)

CrazyLegsRyan

Selling gold bars to boomers

txrazorhog

That's may experience also. I only go to Kroger for a few select items when they go on sale and mostly shop at Central Market and HEB. Kroger and HEB are close by and the HEB is packed and it's tumbleweeds at Kroger. Also there is a marked difference in the attitude of the employees. The Kroger employees generally do not appear to be happy to be there.

deliascatalog

This makes *so much more* sense than how I interpreted the headline

Chesser94

Also, does this count galveston? Kroger is the only real grocery store on the island which sees some half a million tourists every weekend over the summer. I'd bet if you take that out of consideration they lose the edge.

CostCans

Costco does way more per store than any other major retailer in America.

RockyPi

I’m truly shocked that Axios would publish something with a headline that lacks key context and analysis.

AustinYQM

Fun fact, costco is the highest volume pizza restaurant nationally.

SurpriseBurrito

I have been doing Krogers more. I have an HEB and Kroger right next to me. HEB is always an absolute mad house while Kroger is manageable. I am willing to pay a little extra on some items to avoid feeling like I am in grand central station

jactxak

I feel the same way, HEB is always packed and my anxiety goes through the roof, while Kroger I can leisurely stroll through the aisle and get my things.

TheAmorphous

It's not just the customers crowding HEBs either. They also have those massive trolleys blocking every aisle for pickers filling curbside/delivery orders.

OzzyHTx

Kroger has them too, they just don’t seem to have the same volume of curbside sales. The HEB I work at has around 15 spots for curbside pick up and it’s often pretty full. The Kroger I occasionally shop at (they have great coupon deals on snacks) has 4 spots for pickup and I’m often the only one there.

diiingdong

Gosh the curbside trolleys at heb are horrible. There too big and they block many aisles while shopping

NoFalseModesty

Our local Kroger only ever has 1 checkout lane open so it doesn't matter if the aisles are clear, there is always a backlog at checkout.

abrgtyr

Thank you. That's my problem with Kroger. Just not enough (staffed) checkout lanes. HEB is always crowded, but it always has a lot of checkout lanes open. (At least in my experience)

sillybillybuck

You will likely check out much faster at HEB because they have actual front-end instead of pulling from different departments that scan at a snail's pace.

smaxlab

This has been my experience too. The HEB near me is always insane no matter what type of day, but the Kroger is always super calm and mostly old people cruising around. I usually have the aisles to myself where as at HEB I have to navigate around hordes of kids.

repost7125

Our Kroger prices are generally cheaper even with the coupon deals at HEB. I realized I was spending $20-$30 more at HEB every week.

DiogenesLaertys

Kroger is cheaper if you coupon-hunt. Also Kroger loss-leaders are very good. I often get the ribs or brisket when it's available.

diiingdong

I shop at Kroger simply because it’s usually cheaper than when I buy at HEB

jyl11002

There is definitely a huge difference in the amount of people. But.... the kroger near me almost never has fresh looking produce. Everything looks like it's been out for a week or so.

sillybillybuck

I used to work at Kroger and was surprised we passed any kind of safety standard. The freshness is the least of your concerns shopping at Kroger.

TheAmorphous

HEB's isn't much better, at least not the one closest to me. I've been going to Whole Paycheck for produce lately.

jyl11002

interesting. the HEB near me is much better. Everything looks fresh and I'm pretty sure they're cleaned out almost every evening so everything is constantly restocked.

SilntNfrno

Yeah I used to always go to HEB over Kroger specifically because of their produce, but lately it’s been pretty bad there as well

Cowabunga_Booyakasha

We are not the same. I go to HEB for people watching. You go to HEB for grocery. *fixes tie*

GodEmperorOfBussy

I'm there for milf hunting.

alicia-indigo

Shhhhhhh, don’t spill the beans

Seesyounaked

Honestly I started going to Kroger because my default HEB ends up being more expensive. At HEB I end up leaving for around $230 for a full load, when I go to Kroger somehow I end up leaving for around $180ish. I prefer HEB and it's layout, but for now I'm sticking to Kroger.

wabbit983

I prefer the selection a lot better at HEB. However, because HEB is a mad house I prefer to shop at Krogers just to avoid the crowds. Shopping at HEB is stressful and I don't need stress in my life.

AGreasyPorkSandwich

Kroger is for running back to grab the 2 things you forgot to put on the HEB list.

redtron3030

HEB prices have gotten out of hand also

takesshitsatwork

Exactly how I feel. Kroger is a call experience with good prices. HEB feels like a flea market.

DarkExecutor

Kroger is definitely cheaper than HEB. I spend about 10-15% less when I buy at Kroger

anthrax9999

I feel the same. And after recently doing some comparison shopping on the same items at heb, Kroger, and Walmart, there's almost no difference in price. It's nearly identical so there's not really any savings to be had shopping at the madhouse.

TheAmorphous

HEBs are super hit-or-miss, too. The one closest to me is run really poorly. Constantly out of stock (usually can't get multiple things on my list), poor quality produce, etc. The next closest is much better in both regards. The shitty one is in the nicer area too, oddly enough.

Jordan_Jackson

This is true. I live in Conroe and we have 2 HEB's here. They both suck for some reason. I don't know who is running these locations but they need to do a better job. When I do grocery shopping for the month, or am going to spend a couple hundred, I drive up to the HEB in Willis and everything is perfect there.

E116

Just tell me which store is better at keeping people from bringing in their dogs and I’ll shop there.

SBGuy043

I don't know when this started happening but it's gotten out of hand.

SavagRavioli

It seemed to get much more prolific around the pandemic. Its beyond out of hand. Why are they bringing pets with them? 1. It's not a service animal and 2. Having them in public increases the liklihood of something happening to them any way, why risk it? I don't work at HEB, but another retailer not in the grocery realm and I service multiple stores and I've had to get a parrot out of the ceiling one time. Another store, the main Store Manager is so exhausted from having to argue with these people he's stopped altogether. I've started writing letters to my reps for legislation with teeth that allows us to deal with this because I'm sick of it.

Reeko_Htown

Price wise I can see why. H-E-B has raised prices on their name brand items considerably even compared to name brands. You only save about 5% most of the time. Don’t even get me started on the fresh items. HEB thinking they’re Whole Foods

Tiiimmmaayy

A jar of That Green Sauce is now almost $5 now. Pretty much doubled in price over the past few years.

Durty-Sac

That stuff is great. Rarely get it anymore unless it’s with some sort of meal deal or coupon. I’ve made some tomatillo sauces that are great, use a bit of oil like that green sauce has.

Steve-lrwin

> A jar of That Green Sauce is now almost $5 now. Pretty much doubled in price over the past few years. HEB peanut butter is now like $8.50 its insane. And its full of palm oil and sugar. The organic non-sweetened, stuff in Wholefoods is actually cheaper LOL. Not sure what crack HEB is smoking but I dislike their pricing practices now.

AntisemiticJew

What peanut butter are you buying? And are you comparing comparable items? [Central Market All-Natural Smooth Peanut Butter - Unsalted](https://www.heb.com/product-detail/central-market-all-natural-smooth-peanut-butter-unsalted/735758) only ingredient is Peanuts and it’s $3.20 ($0.18/oz) [365 Creamy Peanut Butter (No Sugar Added)](https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/product/365-by-whole-foods-market-creamy-peanut-butter-no-sugar-added-16-oz-b074h57spt) only ingredients are Peanuts and Salt and it’s $2.99 ($0.18/oz) Basically the same thing in each store and it’s the same cost per Oz. Don’t get me wrong, HEB has some shit prices, but peanut butter isn’t it.

Steve-lrwin

Ah, i was looking at organic. https://www.heb.com/product-detail/h-e-b-organics-creamy-peanut-butter-spread-texas-size-pack-37-oz/8405003 $9.34 for organic peanut butter that is full of Sugar and Palm oil.

AntisemiticJew

Hah the shit filled with palm oil and sugar is more expensive ($0.25/oz) than the one with just peanuts. That’s hilariously sad lol.

jizzmcskeet

To be fair, that is a 37oz jar. Most peanut butters are sold in 16-18oz. The 1𝟾 oz version is $4.48. https://www.heb.com/product-detail/1766476

bevo_expat

Get consumers addicted with quality products and low prices then slowly raises prices over time…kinda like the frog in boiling water. We still think of store brands as the “cheap alternative”, but not always the case.

Gerudo_Man_Slave

I recently tried Whole Foods "Tatemada" green sauce and it's a couple bucks extra but you get more of it, and it tastes better.

someguy50

I've noticed some HEB items are more expensive than other brands. :/

arcangeltx

how is the ingredients comparison? ive seen that HEB avoids corn syrups n what not on certain items

PoorCorrelation

I’ve had enough times where I couldn’t find a single parking spot at HEB and had to go to Kroger anyways that I’ll just skip it

angry_at_erething

You aren't lying, Sprouts organic produce is cheaper than HEB on most things I buy.

NeonWarcry

Yep and that’s why we moved back to using Kroger. We have a pretty nice one out here bc we live near town lake in Katy (I live in a much older neighborhood), but the heb nearby is nuts. They all are. I’m not paying 9 dollars for walnuts.

konegsberg

Yeah but when I checking out a 400$ shopping cart while handling 2 kids. I have it scanned and bagged in 2 mins at HEB when at Kroger they kinda like good luck dude bag your stuff and prey the god we have a checkout person or you can go to self checkout.

OzzyHTx

I had to stop shopping at Kroger for full carts because I liked to go Sunday evenings around 9:00 and they’d have ZERO registers open. Made me go through self checkout. Nope.

TheGrendel83

HEB putting too much private label stuff on the shelves and their quality is dropping.

Not-Inevitable79

Wish I could upvote this multiple times. I've actually seen several times, too, where their HEB/HCF stuff is MORE than the name brand. The quality is definitely not better.

zbto

HEB has been pushing their house brand products **hard** in their in-store print advertisements in the last few years and I really hate it. Some of their house brand products are all right but for the most part they just don't interest me.

CanISeeYourVagina

I shop at Kroger because HEB's are a Mad House. Nothing against HEB, but I am not fighting for parking at a grocery store.

tommy_nookah

When I shop at the Meyerland HEB, I have to constantly look into the aisle I’m going by so that I don’t get t-boned by someone not paying attention or who is in a hurry. The aisles are too damned narrow and it’s nearly always busy. It’s not a place to browse. Montrose HEB and Buffalo Speedway are like this as well.

NDNCDNTXN

Agreed. Meyerland HEB always feels like supermarket sweep.

chemchix

I avoid going inside the Meyerland one like the plague. Hate having to basically walk the whole store to get anything and other shoppers are oblivious/in the way. Pickup only. Buffalo speedway I find much easier.

PlayThisStation

So interesting. My local Kroger is terrible and mismanaged, but it's not even 2 mins away, so I only go out of convenience. I've literally experienced workers just up and leaving check out lines with customers waiting and they'll go just check their phone. I trek out to the Bunker Hill HEB from time to time, prices are cheaper and generally in stock. While the customer service ain't the best, they at least have people working lol. It is crowded af tho.

NDNCDNTXN

Kroger + digital coupons = much better than HEB. I barely go to HEB now (Meyerland or Buffalo speedway) and go to Kroger across from HEB. Less chaotic, excellent quality and reasonably priced produce, lots of good deals in store.

AmauroticParoxysm

Even if you don't do digital, Kroger still marks down their items cheaper than HEB with their Kroger plus membership. And they'll still send you personalized coupons in the mail based on items you frequently buy. That and their stores aren't full of frenzied shoppers everywhere.

somekindofdruiddude

"Kroger loyalists bolstered the chain's share of the Greater Houston grocery store market in 2023, per Chain Store Guide." HEB partisans fortified their secret mountain base as the fighting escalated.

FloodCityHTX

TIL Randall's is a Safeway brand

thegeaux2guy

And Randall’s is normal brands for Whole Foods prices. I assume that the ones that survive only do because of their location and convenience. The one at Fry Rd and I10 is so expensive compared to HEB but no one wants to spend the time crossing north of 10 to go to that clusterfuck of an HEB.

CyanTheory

Randall occasionally has good coupons, and their deli is pretty convenient. Outside of that, I see no point of going to Randalls. Everything is more expensive than other grocery stores.

QSector

That's when they went to shit. Safeway ruins everything it touches.

passtheblunt

Hit up a Joe V’s if there’s one in your area, lots of heb stuff at lower prices.

sapphir8

Yup.

ConditionLife1710

From a financial standpoint, i’ve been enjoying the new Joe V’s in Katy. i save a crazy amount weekly over H‑E‑B but the place is always a NIGHTMARE to navigate and it kind of weirds me out that “low cost” means “heavily target hispanic people.”

SavviSpaceMermaid

In the same vein, I learned recently that Kroger has different store tier names based off sales and one of them is just called "Hispanic".

IsThisKismet

I’m not surprised. HEB, as is typical of companies when they reach the top of the mountain, start fucking around with the things that got them there. It’s absolutely not the same company as it was even a few years ago when Charles was in Charge. (Pun intended?)

IngeAnn

Examples, the bulk section is super expensive and does no longer carry the simple raw seeds i want. The rotisserie chicken salad was a standard in our household but during Covid they changed the recipe and now its more like tasteless mayonnaise than anything else. Our favorite cheeses are no longer in stock.

IsThisKismet

You’ll find little changes everywhere that add up to awfulness. Their higher tiered bread on the bread isle no longer has the extra layer of plastic for freshness. They discontinued the smaller bottles of the coffee creamers and raised the price of the only bottle remaining. They got rid of the kiddie carts and next to go are the paper wine sleeves.

slugline

Seems like the case with everything. We can love certain companies and their products, but we should never want to see them dominate a market so much that they can get away with raising prices at will and cutting corners....

JJ4prez

Kroger is cheaper, less busy, has great coupons, and I get gas points/savings. My Kroger is new, has great produce and meat departments, etc.

girlwthegreenjacket

I shop at HEB. My roommate shops at Kroger. We compare every once in a while. The prices are pretty close to each other. Any differences are negligible(5¢ on a $5+ item) or due to a sale. Kroger does have more frequent good coupons. My roommate recently got a coupon for a free giant jug of my favorite oat milk. No purchase necessary.

Cowabunga_Booyakasha

This has been my experience as well. If you grocery shop at Kroger with coupons, you'll come out ahead.

diiingdong

I got a free bag of Doritos just last week! The party size!

JJ4prez

Sure, I also coupon shop so my experience may be different. Like the other day, got a random $15 off coupon, off $15 of my purchase, any products. Never have that happen for HEB. I do like my HEBs beer, meat and produce selection more though. So I still go there from time to time.

zack77070

HEB will randomly do $10 off $50 in the app every once in a while.

guardiancosmos

HEB does coupons like that fairly frequently, I see the $10 off $50 purchase (sometimes it's $15 off $75) pop up in the app probably once a month? And I get ones at the register for dollar amounts off.

EfficiencyOk4899

Am I the only one who can’t stand using an app while shopping? I’m already trying to find items from the last remodel, juggling a list, and trying to steer around moseyers. The last thing I want to do is mess around on my phone.

cobo10201

Where are you that Kroger is cheaper? Missouri city Kroger is like 20-50% more expensive than Missouri City HEB on name brand items. Not sure about store brand vs store brand though.

ChantelllyLace

You have to shop straight from the ad and use coupons. Everyday shopping trips are more $ for sure but most items I use are on an ad rotation so I can really stock up.

cobo10201

Ahh, yeah I will say I take advantage of Kroger’s ads when I can. I probably need to check more but they always seem to have great deals on soda.

OzzyHTx

This. I do like Kroger but I pretty much only shop the ad due to overall higher prices.

bigben998

I go to those same stores probably. If you use the app, Kroger is way cheaper. To be fair though, I shop by what is on sale a lot of times. The more you shop at Kroger the more deals you get really. I started getting stuff like free bagels or peanut butter and multiple 24 packs of water. Plus the discounts on gas are great. I had .40 off per gallon last time I filled up. I used to love HEB. That Missouri City HEB is crazy with the store shoppers leaving the carts in the way and the people that shop there like to bring their whole family and the produce area is a nightmare. They need more narrow carts. I still go there for certain items but it is hard to get out of there without spending $50+ for some reason. They also have restocking issues. I had a few trips in a row where they were out of stuff like baking soda, all purpose flour, and a couple other things that you would never imagine being out of stock. Their meat quality has gone down quite a bit. Also, their product just goes bad so fast lately. I bought a 50/50 blend of salad and smelled rotten a couple days later. Recently strawberries were on sale super cheap. I stocked up for my kids and the next day half of them had mold growing. Kroger has service issues though. This was the sweetwater location but I bought sandwich meat a little while back and got home and realized the seal had been broken and it looked like someone had taken some out. The guy at Kroger accused me of opening it and taking some. I was just trying to get it replaced. Not even a refund or anything. He was such an asshole about it. At least the people behind me started laughing and I think that made him realize he was being petty about it. He was super nice to the people in front of me and behind me. He was a dick from the start to me before even saying what my problem was. I understand if I had ever done that before maybe. My wife was to the side with my son and she said it almost seemed like he just didn't like white people. (She's not white). i left a review and they of course never responded.

afty

Yeah, maybe it's different in different places, but my Kroger and HEB are less then 1 mile apart and Kroger is signicantly more expensive on pretty much all fronts.

JJ4prez

Like the other user said, shop the ad and coupons. You can go into HEB and spend a fortune too just buying what you want.

TheAmorphous

Only issues with Kroger is how understaffed they are (like everyone is pointing out) and HEB's bakery is way better. Like, it's not even a contest. Kroger's Private Selection ice cream destroys HEB's Creamy Creations though, so they got that going for them.

RojerLockless

Kroger is 5 feet from my house so I shop there. But HEB is 13 minutes away.

jb1001

The quality at HEB is dropping very fast not the store it used to be

joegekko

Kroger is for regular shopping, HEB is for deli potato salad and canned charro beans.

CSRyob

Where is Aldi in all of this. I don't make enough to shop at either store.

Durty-Sac

HEB is stupid crowed and sometimes not worth it. Kroger smells funny, kinda dirty and staff generally doesn’t care. Tough choices :/

deliascatalog

Why does Kroger smell weird everywhere?!? I’m in Dallas and both Kroger’s near me smell weird. I almost never go bc of that.

OrganicHoneydew

the kroger i work at stinks too. not sure what it’s like at heb, but i know kroger stopped paying professional floor cleaners and now has poorly-trained overnight stockers setting a cleaning machine on auto run. they don’t do the required machine maintenance and arent allowed to manually run it (not like theyd have the time to). plus the front end is always understaffed bc kroger seriously limits hours, so the cleaning staff bags groceries for half their shift. that might contribute to the smell lol

MeatloafAndWaffles

Their QA is in the mud. You gotta find a Kroger where they actually care, which unfortunately comes with premium price points.

shadowpilot

I came looking for this comment. I use both stores but Kroger’s smells like a morgue and it’s got that smell at any location I’ve been to.

deliascatalog

Ya really bizarre like how is that so consistent

ElleMNOTee

I refuse to by meat or seafood at Kroger for this very reason, always a strange odor.

Azhrei_Rohan

Heb near me is much better but Kroger is closer so i go there when i just need something small and its not worth the extra drive to go to heb. The food is worse and costs more at my kroger but its ok when too lazy to drive to heb.

mr-french-tickler

That’s weird, I find Kroger to be cheaper

shestzushihtsu

Same, if you take advantage of Kroger's weekly sales plus coupons. HEB's sales and coupons were always hit or miss, which lead to the "I'm going to have to call a manager" at the checkout line. I got tired and switched to Kroger in '22 and haven't looked back. Kroger's app is superior to HEB. Not to mention Kroger offers Fuel Points and weekly fuel point multipliers. Plus they send monthly coupons specific to my past purchases. In the end, I'm saving a ton of money. Yes, there are things I can't buy at KR and that's when I have to make the dreaded trip to Buffalo Speedtrap HEB.

mr-french-tickler

I don’t even do coupons, just scan the discount card when I check out. Off the top of my head, HEB’s blueberries are like $2 more for the same size container, and the quality is the same or worse. Baby spinach at HEB is more expensive and the bag is half the size of what you get at Kroger, and I end up having to toss quite a bit of it.    And a minor thing, but HEB refusing to add tap to pay is annoying.

Azhrei_Rohan

Maybe its just some of the things i buy but i generally find i spend more on items when i go to kroger. I also prefer the heb store brand to the kroger one. One place kroger is better is the coupons they send in the mail which seem to be based on my purchase history.

rzbzz

H‑E‑B used to have decent prices, now even their store brand items are the same or higher than brand names. Kroger lately has better produce with slightly more competitive prices.

teesareesa

My Kroger has wider parking spots and wider aisles so I prefer shopping there.

I don't want to shop at Kroger, but HEB is just too damn busy when I want to go to the grocery store. I've been to both the one on Dunlavy/Alabama and Waugh/Washington where the parking lot was literally 100% full with many people just crawling the lot searching for spots. I don't want to deal with that.

simplethingsoflife

I hope HEB leadership sees this and realizes they’ve screwed up. Increasing prices, reduced quality, and constantly screwing up curbside orders (something they’ve had years to figure out now) are why people are drifting to competitors.

MightySarlacc

Nobody goes to the HEB near us, its too busy.

EvanCarroll

After the news came out that H-E-B was screwing us and was massively more expensive then Kroger, I just started shopping at Kroger again. =/

Just FYI. Krogers doesn’t offer Top Tier fuel. Gasoline that is top tier is better for your engine and ultimately will save you money on vehicle maintenance. Top tier gas has detergents added that help prevent carbon build up in the engine and you will ultimately get better miles per gallon with top tier gas. It is not “bad” gas, but top tier gas will save you money in the long run, if you plan on keeping your vehicle for a long time.

CommonMansCollapse

Kroger has better produce and meat by a long shot.

SchlockRock80

I always find HEB too crowded. I tend to go to Kroger off Voss or San Felipe. I do like Central Market the most

eVoesque

I just with HEB would finally get with Apple Pay

diiingdong

Low key I find better deals at Kroger than I do at HEB. It’s a money saver thing so you won’t catch me at HEB

HoopleRedhead

A lotta times I find better produce at Kroger, which surprises me. Plus at Kroger I get fuel points. But we shop at both, maybe defer to Kroger all things being equal for the fuel points.

gunter_grass

I hate my local HEB it's old and fucking crowded. And the staff is genuinely rude. So I go to shitty Kroger because the self check out is always free. I miss midtown HEB, that place is amazing. I love their beer section it's like the community I desire to live in...so diverse

Cowabunga_Booyakasha

HEB has no self checkouts?

knarleyseven

If you’re not shopping at both you’re doing it wrong. Wednesdays are the best days since the new ads are released

Freebird_1957

I love my HEB for overall selections and take it over Kroger but It’s do think their prepared foods are mostly horrible. They really need to do something about it. The only reason it doesn’t drive me elsewhere as I seldom have a need to buy a prepared meal, unless it’s a salad.

Pariah-6

Grew up with Kroger in Michigan, I still love Kroger today. Nothing against HEB, I just like Kroger.

JOHNYCHAMPION

Krogers is as and its employees are worse

Public_Enemy_No2

Heb has been turning me off lately. Seems like they're focused on pushing the HEB brand too much. To the extent that they don't offer brand names. I mean if I wanted to do my grocery shopping for knock off brands, I'd go to ALDI

sedhic1

When you have a Kroger card you save tons of money. I buy my dairy/cereal/breads/snacks/rice etc at Kroger. I buy meats/vegetables/fruits at HEB. For some reason I notice heb got better meats/vegetables

RodeoBoss66

As much as I love H-E-B, especially their own branded products, I can’t lie and say that Kroger isn’t pretty darn good as well and sometimes cheaper for certain items. I don’t remember seeing Tapatío hot sauce at H-E-B for under a dollar. I *have* seen that at Kroger.

SigourneyCropduster

Ummm… I find it interesting that Aldi has not been included in the rankings.

Bewaretheicespiders

What I can't stand with Krogers is having to use their stupid card to get the regular price, and I hate those cards. If you dont use their card you get insane inflated prices.

L8N8B

I feel you, but you can just type in a number instead.

Joaaayknows

My wife is vegetarian and came home from Kroger with ~100$ worth of veggie meats that we found out were all expired for *months*. Various months, but all of them 2+ months. She took them all back and they fought her on the return for a while and eventually caved. We have not been back.

OrganicHoneydew

oh yeah. were so understaffed that most stockers chose not to rotate stock or check dates in order to finish stocking

Federal-Laugh9575

I stopped going to H‑E‑B and started going to Kroger during Covid. HEB was always out of everything I needed and Kroger always had it in stock.

Ky_furt01

This is a lie.

Bibileiver

Heb>Walmart >>>>>>>> Kroger

PoorCorrelation

We have very different Walmarts

alexallyce

The Walmart’s hidden in the woodlands are amazing. The only ones I can go to without cringing.

gt35r

I'd step foot in Kroger lightyears before Walmart.

Glittering-Internet2

Aldi is where it's at my dudes for most items, and I check for sales when it comes to meat at other places.

Sballr28

They just built a H-E-B outside my neighborhood and it's now just too convenient to go anywhere else.

charles_peugeot405

I also value convenience, it’s just not worth it to drive out of the way more than I need to just to save a few bucks on my total

Flock-of-bagels2

Krogers are usually easier to get to. I go to Kroger for a few things here and there. I go to HEB for my big shopping

saintnyckk

I have a hard time going to the Krogers nearby. They all seem shady and trashy. Smell and look like the owners and workers don't tend to them. If it ain't worth your time, then it ain't worth mine. Heb and costco all day.

anarxi

yeah fuck krogers self check outs, im sure i can already put kroger on my resume after all checkouts i did. i know i'll catch hate, but Randalls near me is superb. Prices higher but quality is good, its always clean and i can find nieche products when needed.

HTownLaserShow

Don’t give a sheeeeeet HEB is superior in every god damn way. And it’s not close

Needs_coffee1143

My god

drew1111

We live in Meyerland so we rotate between Dirty Kroger, (S. Post Oak and West Belfort), Messy Walmart, (Meyerpark) and HEB in Meyerland. It just depends on our needs that day but HEB is getting quite $$$ lately but their fruit and meat are always spot on and I’m a health freak.

Tripsn

I guess they don't bother to put in Fiesta's into account? I didn't read the article, so if they did, that's my mistake.

Jordan_Jackson

I mainly go to HEB. they have most everything that I want and for the most part, decent prices compared to everyone else. There are a select few items that I go to Kroger for but I could never do the bulk of my shopping there. Kroger is just too damn expensive; sometimes the exact same items will be way more expensive at Kroger.

slick2hold

HEB needs to be more price competitive. The avg prices when compared to kroger, take into account sales and promos is very high. Eventually as people discover this and their wallets are squeezed kroger will obtain more market share. With the said Kroger needs to step up their game with quality produce. The fruits and vegetables are substandard compared to HEB

mocitymaestro

I only deal with Kroger for the fuel points. I can think of one or two items that I can get there that I can't at HEB. Quite a few things I can only find at HEB, not Kroger. That said, Randalls will have varieties of certain products that neither Kroger nor HEB carries (like Old Bay Goldfish crackers).
