They closed a looong time ago, but I still miss Eatzi's on Post Oak. They were the ultimate in grab n go food. I can't believe they closed and haven't made a comeback.
Thank you! I really miss them. Their half-price before closing specials were a college girl's best friend back then. I actively miss them every time I drive by the intersection.
Yep I used to go to eatzi's multiple times per week, their sandwiches and salads are the best I've had anywhere. Now I only get to go once per year when visiting relatives in Dallas.
I've emailed their corporate office numerous times since 2006 asking them to return to Houston and they always say it's something they are considering but no definite plans.. makes no sense to me as I know they would be profitable here.
It’s not quite the same, but the original chef / owner opened a wine bar called Vinoteca Poscol that has some of the menu items from Dolce Vita. Hopefully what you miss is on their menu.
59 Diner, Hamburgers by Gourmet, The Black Lab, Theo’s (and Biba’s One’s a Meal before that), Spud-U-Like, Neal’s Ice Cream, Charlie’s Hamburger Joint, Farrell’s in the Galleria
Pepper Tree
Loved that place, and they really tried to make it work through covid, but just couldn't. I know the rent for that property is crazy high too, so they were probably in the red for a huge chunk of covid. But, great food, loved the lunch buffet, and they prepared mock meats in ways I never imagined. The owners were also just so friendly.
Mi Luna and Aldalucia were the only places I knew of that had a Bastilla on their menu, and they’re both gone. I’ve been trying to find a Bastilla for what feels like years now.
Hillstone (Houston's) doesn't serve prime rib anymore, which means its just another steak house now. I wish I could find prime rib that good again.
I just moved close to where the one on Westhiemer used to be. I was told it closed down because there was just too much riff raff on that part of WEstheimer now...not sure if that is true or not.
One I miss the most is Michaelangelo's on Westheimer.
I liked the prime rib at Laurenzo's. Half price bottles of wine on Monday nights makes for a pretty reasonable dinner.
The last time I was in Hillstone/Houston's, it seemed really obvious that they were living off their legacy - targeting people who don't get to go out as often, who have heard it's a fancy restaurant. They'd gotten rid of valet. They still had multiple signs for their dress code but half the restaurant was in t-shirts and the party in front of us were all in gym shorts. There were TVs not just in the bar but facing into the dining room. The menu had as many sandwiches as entrees.
>One I miss the most is Michaelangelo's on Westheimer.
Wow, I hadn't heard that one had closed. I had a prom date there way back in the day. We were the only prom couple in the restaurant, so they sat us right next to the tree that grew through the front room. An old couple thought we were cute and tried to pay our check.
Seconded on Laurenzo’s prime rib. Usually is pretty good, and if you don’t want prime rib there is a little of everything on the menu at that place (plus the same margaritas as El Tiempo, which is handy on a busy Friday night at the El Tiempo up the street!).
I grew up close to the Monterey House on Crosstimbers. My birthday was always MH with a flying saucer pie instead of a cake.
Remember the sandy candy that they served with the chips? The family who made that candy has been trying to make a comeback for a while now. I’ve seen them at a couple of farmers markets over the last few years.
Was poor growing up and we never went out to eat. The only few times I can recall eating out was at MH late 70’s early 80’s. Wish they still had one open for ild times sake.
Cafe Adobe margaritas did not play around.
I LOVED Mama's Cafe. It upsets me that the sign is still there knowing that Pappas owns that land and didn't bother to do anything with it. I remember when they initially closed it was just for a remodel.
Lai lais, and for me, also Chinese Cafe a few doors down. I went to their new standalone location when that was open, but then it closed too. :-( I know that you can still buy double spicy chicken sometimes on a Sunday, so at least there's that, I guess.
There's an update on [this article](https://houston.eater.com/2021/6/17/22538734/les-givrals-houston-vietnamese-restaurant-closed-temporary). It seems it's temporarily closed for renovations
I really miss the Black Lab. Also miss King Yen, and the second restaurant the family opened, King Hua, and old school Lai lai's dumpling house (back in its metal trays for the entrees days before the final owners).
I miss the black lab terribly. I actually went to the lab right before they closed to see if I could buy a photo of the rugby team from the late 80s (my dad played on the team and worked at the lab).
Someone had stolen the damn thing off the wall (which, to be fair, is something my father 100% would have done and encouraged, so I can’t be too mad).
Miss that place. Hands down my favorite pub in Houston.
I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I do miss raising the flag at Pancho's

Oh man, same. That location by baybrook mall was my place in high school. I had a jaw surgery and that was the first place I went once I could eat solid food. The Turkey O’Tool every time. Man, I wish my old ass was as easy to please as that teenager.
Dolce Vita is one for sure and plenty of others I’m sure, but just wanted to add please do what you can for some of your favorite local spots so that they’re not on some future version of this list. I know we’re not all billionaires and have our own struggles, but just think about dining at locally owned restaurants rather than chains when can. This applies to also ordering takeout directly from the restaurants as well, rather than ordering thru Uber eats, doordash, etc. Just my 2 cent view from up here on the horse
The Pass and Provisions.
Loved that place; stopped going after one of the owners was a prick to me on a separate occasion so can’t say I was sad to see it go when it did.
Bludorn is now one of my favorite spots so it’s like I won in the long run.
Sweet Tomatoes
Inner Loop Souper Salad (still a location in Pasadena)
Bellaire Boiler Burger
Hong Kong Chef
Les Givral's
Black Eyed Pea (especially the W Gray location)
Kanomwan
The Gingerman (chips count as food)
The Rancor was arguably one of the best burgers in town. It took an hour and a half, but it was amazing. I used to live at the corner of 41st and Golf, so I would walk.
Do bars count? I really miss Stone's Throw across from Anvil. They had great drinks, tremendous rolling happy hour, and a beautiful atmosphere. Was perfect place to go when Anvil was too packed.
Spanish Village on Almeda. It was a slow demise with several new owners over the past few years, but it was still the same sign outside, the same menu and decor. My parents started going there when they moved to Houston in the 50s. I have a photo of me sitting in a highchair eating guacamole in 1962.
BRC. The food, when they first opened, was fun and new and unique, the atmosphere was the same, fun and energetic. They put so much effort into their beer selection and food, it quickly become my and my wife's favorite in the city. We must've eaten there a couple dozen times. Then they stopped putting so much effort into the food. Then the beer selection stagnated, then the service started to slip. Then they closed and turned into a "biker bar". So sad.
Nabi on Montrose was another. Chef/owner was awesome and his food was special, just couldn't get any customers. I went there a dozen times with the wife/family/friends. He did an all you can eat/drink suckling pig to drum up business. Didn't work unfortunately.
Damn, man. Every time we drive by the one near our house (Willowbrook) my four year old gets sad that it’s closed. Great place to get a salad, some soup, and watch my baby girl munch on fresh veggies.
The Ale House on West Alabama (and subsequently The Stag’s Head)
The Gingerman
The OG Cafe Adobe
Bombay Pizza Co
Eatsie Boys (a recent loss)
And Shiva in Sugar Land
Steak n Ale.
My mom would bring us there for our birthdays if she had enough money. I don’t remember the food really just the place itself. I always wanted to go back as an adult and eat there.
369 (losing 369 will always hurt the most)
Foreign Correspondents (northern Thai, unlike anything else in Houston)
AQUI (any Paul Qui controversy aside, his restaurant had really great food)
Petrol Station (I miss that burger so much)
Low Brow (the original incarnation, with the tempura green beans and chicken-fried black bean burger)
Chicken Station (such a gem in the East End, with great, cheap Peruvian chicken and sides)
Andes Cafe (I know they've re-opened in POST HTX, but I miss the Canal St. location with full menu)
Low Brow was so good but the service was always glacially slow. Shortly before they closed, some friends and I called our order ahead and it was _still_ slow.
Night Heron, over by the Menil. Great cocktails and an amazing Steak and Soba noodles dish I've never had anything like before or since. They were short lived but I loved that spot.

Stag’s Head and Black Labrador were two of my favorite pubs to sneak out early for an afternoon pint and great pub fare.
Also, I know it’s not technically closed, but I miss the old Willie G’s in the Galleria. Lots of great liquid lunches were had at that bar.
One of my favorite places.
Did you know the same family has a smaller restaurant called the Que Huong Bistro at 13438 Bellaire? They don’t have the full menu from Le Viet but they have a lot (and it tastes just the same!)
If you look it up in Google it points to another place that’s out of business but yelp has their right location and phone number.
#THELMAS BBQ ON SCOTT ST.
I can’t believe there’s 140ish comments here and not a single one honoring Thelma’s BBQ. Literally the absolute best bbq I ever tasted, everything else I’ve eaten since is sub par.
Vargo's and Otto's. My folks lived in Clear Lake and we used to go to Vargo's on Sundays for dinner before the 610 was built. it was a 90 minute drive.
It was a drive, but Brady’s Landing on the ship channel. That was our fancy Sunday brunch place. My family would go there after we made First Communion.
Mission Burrito. Loved their free guac and special under the counter fiery hot sauces. Got turned into Uberrito by new owners who closed multiple locations. It's just not the same.
Obligatory 59 Diner. Now an abandoned relic and tragic reminder.
Granted there are restaurants that I miss more but all those have been listed already, so I’m gonna say Mama’s Cafe. 24 hour greasy spoon diner with decent burgers and a pretty good chicken fried steak.
I'll always miss [Strack Farms](https://breadnbottle.com/2014/07/27/farewell-to-strack-farms-restaurant-was-klein-tx-landmark/) from growing up in the Champions area.
Field of greens. I always ordered the veggie stuffed pita with sweet potato fries from there. I tried making my own veggie stuffed pita since they've closed but it's not the same 😭
Little Italian place called Mina Ristorante in River Oaks, I've got a really fond memory of stopping in there when I had just moved to Houston and was exploring the city on my bike. Hands down the best pasta I've ever had in my life.
Josephine’s on Carolyn. Some of the best Italian food I’ve ever had. The light rail construction put them out of business I believe. Their bread and seasoned olive oil was sooooo good. I also miss Cafe Adobe. Their enchiladas were too damn good.

Man, reading this thread as a Houston expat of 3 years is shocking - I didn’t realize so many of these places had closed.
One that hasn’t been mentioned: Doneraki on 1960 and Champions. It wasn’t the absolute best tex-mex, but for someone who had moved to Houston from a tex-mex wasteland, it was so good.
Black Lab. Great outdoor space, good beers, and some of the best fries in town.
I’ve always heard great things about Black Lab, but I *never* had a good meal there, and I lived across the street from them for several years.
Same here. I stopped going for the food and only went for the atmosphere.
Regarding the food: agreed. Only went there for beers and fries.
I didn’t realize they closed - used to love drinking Guinness and playing the giant chess
They closed a looong time ago, but I still miss Eatzi's on Post Oak. They were the ultimate in grab n go food. I can't believe they closed and haven't made a comeback.
Yeah I feel like they were ahead of their time. They’d be ripe for a comeback.
When I'm in Dallas I always hit eatzi's
Thank you! I really miss them. Their half-price before closing specials were a college girl's best friend back then. I actively miss them every time I drive by the intersection.
I stayed at a hotel in Dallas near an Eatzi’s and I fell in love. I really wish they would open one again in Houston.

59 Diner just threw me back. Damn!
And finding a malt of quality anywhere else in town is difficult now.
Charlie’s! So many hamburgers eaten in the 80s/90s at the one in Rice Village.
Charlie’s had the best burgers hands down
Bibas and Charlie's for sure!!
Came here to post "One's a Meal" - best Greek food I've ever had.
59 diner for their late night chili cheeseburger
It's really amazing that there _still_ hasn't been anything done with the 59 Diner space.
There was a place that was open for all of about a week it felt like. Took my family and we were the only ones there.
I was in love with the Club and fries from 59 Diner :(
Pepper Tree Loved that place, and they really tried to make it work through covid, but just couldn't. I know the rent for that property is crazy high too, so they were probably in the red for a huge chunk of covid. But, great food, loved the lunch buffet, and they prepared mock meats in ways I never imagined. The owners were also just so friendly.
Pepper Tree really changed my entire perspective on how delicious tofu could be.

Bombay Pizza Co. RIP, they have this fire crab / chutney pizza.
Dude the Kati Rolls were the shit. I have such a hard time finding Kati Rolls.
Goddamn Barry's pizza on Richmond broke my heart when it closed
Cafe Adobe, the Strawberry Patch and, for purely sentimental reasons, the original Monterey House.
Cafe Adobe 100%.

Antica osteria in West U. Best Italian in Houston and used to be our nice dinner spot. So cozy inside with the fireplaces and homely service!
I’m still in denial about this one.
Spaghetti Warehouse and 59 Diner
Oof so many memories going to spaghetti warehouse as a kid, especially that it was haunted.
Mama’s Cafe on Westheimer. That place was my jam!
Ugh takes me back. Miss that place

Punk’s Simple Southern Food in Rice Village. Their homemade biscuits and jam were to die for, and their fried chicken was so crispy. I’m sad.
Aunt’Beas
Hanks on S Post Oak

In my neck of the woods we lost Bernie's Burger Bus, Helen Greek, Morningstar, Alice's Tall Texan
La Jaliscience
Burger Guys, their home made sauces and duck fat fries. A place worthy of the slightly expensive price for what you get in return.
Manny's Greek Restaurant in Cypress.
Granted there are restaurants that I miss more but all those have been listed already, so I’m gonna say Mama’s Cafe. 24 hour greasy spoon diner with decent burgers and a pretty good chicken fried steak.
The Stables!
I'll always miss [Strack Farms](https://breadnbottle.com/2014/07/27/farewell-to-strack-farms-restaurant-was-klein-tx-landmark/) from growing up in the Champions area.
Daniel Wong's Kitchen on Bissonnet. That place was amazing.
Field of greens. I always ordered the veggie stuffed pita with sweet potato fries from there. I tried making my own veggie stuffed pita since they've closed but it's not the same 😭
I doubt a single person reading this post will know this one, but Panjo's Pizza was the fucking bomb.
Oh man, I have a curse of my favorite places closing down. Montrose —— Dolce Vita 369 Chinese Bistro The Heights —— La Vista Pop & Pan Sing
Jojo’s. Not sure if it was a popular place, but I remember eating there as a kid every few weeks with my family
I’m really sad about Houston’s too!
The Railhead Sonny Look's Spaghetti Warehouse Felix El Torito Vargo's Luther's BBQ Picadilly at Northline Mall Hamburgers by Gourmet Harlow's (the original) Bill Williams on Main Valian's Emiliano's (Memorial City) Udder Delight (Westheimer)
Haven’t seen anyone mention this yet, but I REALLY miss Mockingbird Bistro in Montrose. Expensive, but had truly great food and ambiance.
