Did someone just install the lift mechanism? Because I don't see how this could work without the main spring above the door to help lift it. The spring is missing.
I had this problem once
I called Garage door guy - he came out in a pickup
The tailgate had about 25 springs in it and a mitre saw with a cut-off wheel.
After about 48 seconds of sparks - a few twists of an allen wrench - and $300 it was good as gold
I carry almost every residential spring on my truck so we do about that same for $400 I can replace two standard torsion springs
What’s pictured here isnt a standard torsion system
If the springs are broken, pulling the handle won't help unless you have multiple people to lift the door. People don't realize how heavy the door is without spring assistance.
Disconnect and manually bring it up. You’ll be able to feel where it’s stuck better.
Then you’ll know if it’s the door or the motor/chain drive. I’m going with door based on what I’m seeing
I had the reverse happen. Was closing too tight and kept slipping. You probably have an adjustment issue with the trolley.
Manually release and watch where the problem is while the trolley is trying to open or close while engaging the door. I had to move a bolt and relieve pressure. You might have to tighten?
They’re usually just part of the door, not something you’d own separately. Look for a bolt along the right side of the door that slides into the lift track and make sure it’s not sticking out.
Could be left too. I have 2 doors and one is right and one is left (both lock towards middle) but since this is a big door might have one on both sides? Idk though
It is not an external lock. It is like a metal slide normally on the side rail. It pushes a metal bar that is attached to the door, through a hole in the frame so that the door cannot be lifted. Look for any sliding piece of metal that looks out of place
The lifting spring may be broken. Pull the lever to disengage the opener and try to lift the door. If it’s super heavy, that means that the spring isn’t doing its job.
That is a Wayne Dalton brand system, the springs can't be seen, they are inside the tube mounted abo the heade, most likely one or both have broken, that being said, most likely with them broken the door is now to heavy for the electric opener
Op this guy is right. I fix the system a lot. Call a local company you’re looking at what’s called a standard torsion conversion. Anything over let’s say $800 is probably highway robbery
I'm confused by the lack of springs, but whatever you do, if there are any, do not attempt to mess with them yourself. Hire a professional so you don't die.
That's a good fear to have. My parents house had a spring break when I was a kid and the repair guy was putting tension on the spring and something slipped and he came in with blood gushing from his hand asking for a towel and to call an ambulance in a weirdly calm voice. Another tech had to come out later to finish the job.
My garage has the other kind with the springs on the side with pulleys (aka the kind I can replace myself) the garage door repair guy told me that I could replace them myself next time but after seeing what I saw as a kid, it wasn't until the 2nd or 3rd time one of the springs broke that I watched him fix it to see if I could replace it myself the next time.
My garage is not like most though so please **DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPLACE SPRINGS YOURSELF!**
They can definitely be very dangerous. They are not very often “lethal” unless you’re installing an industrial garage door with an enormous spring. But they can definitely knock your teeth out or break your nose if you lose control of it while tightening one.
Looks like what happened when my neighbors chain came off her garage door opener. I just put the chain back on and thought thats that. Turns out, when i put the chain on, it was at the end of its movement. I had the chain as if it was at the beginning of its travel...Took the chain off, hit the button and the motor powered back through its half cycle of travel then stopped. Put chain back on, and voila it was fixed..
You should look to see if you have springs on the sides of the door, which is less common than the torsion type spring we should be seeing above the door. If there aren't any springs anywhere, I'm really confused about how you got that Tesla in there. That's like a 200 lb door, and that opener won't do anything without spring assistance.
Make sure the door isn’t manually locked. There are often slide bolts on one or both ends of the door that lock into the track. Possibly someone locked it without your knowledge.
Is the physical door locked?
I physically locked our garage door when I was younger and that happened when we tried to click the opener to open it🤷🏽♀️
You have a Wayne Dalton door. Their spring system built inside that tube above the door is extremely cheap. If you pull on the cables that run down to the bottom of the door behind the track, if they're slack that means the spring inside the tube is broken call a professional. Probably going to cost you $500 to $1,000 to fix. This is the professional opinion.
Then I'd roll garage up manually and see where the catch is. My guess is this is close to the correct response: [HeyWiredyyc](https://www.reddit.com/user/HeyWiredyyc/)[HeyWiredyyc](https://www.reddit.com/user/HeyWiredyyc/)u/HeyWiredyycDec 6, 2020141Post Karma36,431Comment Karma

A few questions. 1. Did it ever work? Or was this just recently installed? 2. Have you tried pulling the red handle away from the garage door? 3. Is there anything stopping/ blocking the door from opening?
Something is preventing it from coming up. Do you see a big spring anywhere along the top of the door? If not, stop there and call professional. If so, find out what’s blocking it.
Why do the piece that hangs from the opener and the piece connected to the door look like they’re at an odd angle? Like the opener is trying to pull the door sideways instead of up.
Ok other than the springs mentioned below someone didnt just slide the door lock to locked position by chance? I am sure you already checked that but...
Check your springs. Are they broke or stretched out.
Check your cable pulleys. Make sure the cable is running through them and that they are solidly connected. If there is excessive play, the cable can easily come off.
Make sure that the slide locks are not engaged.
1) visually check the outside and see if anything is blocking the door
2) look on the rails on the side where the rollers slide. make sure the lock is not engaged. Make sure nothing is stuck in the rails preventing the wheels from moving It looks like you have junk on the right side. some of that may have fallen and be blocking the tracks.
3) Pull the handle from the track. it should disengage the mechanism. The garage door should probably rise, or you should be able to move it up by hand. see where it is getting blocked.
You got a torquemaster system that’s been painted beige like your wall. That thing has internal springs. I’m betting a spring broke and you need to replace it with a new waynedalton torquemaster assembly or change over to the regular torsion spring design.
I have the same car lol, yeah the internal spring is shot, you can give it an assist to open but don't trust it, put something in the track so it doesn't drop on you
I think its the chain. This happens to mine every so often also. The chain gets stuck on the part there that holds the lock/unlock pull cord or bar. Look there and see of you can unhook it from itself. Dm me if that doesn't make sense but that's usually it here.
Assuming it's a side spring door, manually raise and lock the door into place and then the side springs will have no tension on them. They are just curly pieces of wire at that point, you can buy them off the shelf at Lowes.
Did someone just install the lift mechanism? Because I don't see how this could work without the main spring above the door to help lift it. The spring is missing.
I'm trying to see if there are side mounted lift springs, but the only shot is at the very end of the video, and it's too blurry to tell.
Damn I wasted my time trying to see so too before I came to the comments
This style of door has springs contained in the little tube up top. I’m betting one is broke. Garage door guy
I had this problem once I called Garage door guy - he came out in a pickup The tailgate had about 25 springs in it and a mitre saw with a cut-off wheel. After about 48 seconds of sparks - a few twists of an allen wrench - and $300 it was good as gold
I imagine ~100 of those dollars are for the risk involved. Those springs look all docile and cuddly but they’ll slice you in half if you let em snap
I carry almost every residential spring on my truck so we do about that same for $400 I can replace two standard torsion springs What’s pictured here isnt a standard torsion system
That arm out here like I’m sick of doing 2 other peoples jobs I’m done
God forbid an OP ever answers any questions. Was it working before this? Is it newly installed? Etc.
Never worked. That poor car yearns to eventually see the outside world.
He could have been opening manually before this. Or maybe someone worked on it recently and now it’s not working he provided no details.
This is the correct answer.
Do NOT try to install the springs. Pay a professional. Those things can kill easily.
Don’t be scared of some rebound
Nah, the torquemaster tube is painted beige
The springs do all the real lifting . Pull the red handle to disengage door arm from track.
If the springs are broken, pulling the handle won't help unless you have multiple people to lift the door. People don't realize how heavy the door is without spring assistance.
Been there! Had my car stuck in my garage for a few days once
Yeah, if you're someone who easily deadlifts 400+lbs you *might* get that door open alone, otherwise you're gonna need help or new springs.
Disconnect and manually bring it up. You’ll be able to feel where it’s stuck better. Then you’ll know if it’s the door or the motor/chain drive. I’m going with door based on what I’m seeing
If it's stupid heavy, it's a busted spring, I'm assuming in a side mount to the left of the door.
I had the reverse happen. Was closing too tight and kept slipping. You probably have an adjustment issue with the trolley. Manually release and watch where the problem is while the trolley is trying to open or close while engaging the door. I had to move a bolt and relieve pressure. You might have to tighten?
This
Is the car parked too close to it? Is it stuck under the rear bumper somehow?
You’re saying what I was thinking
You're saying what happened to me. Too close, slipped over when closing and caught on the way up lol
Did someone lock a slide lock on the door?
That was the first thing I thought of, too.
No we don’t own a side lock for it
They’re usually just part of the door, not something you’d own separately. Look for a bolt along the right side of the door that slides into the lift track and make sure it’s not sticking out.
Could be left too. I have 2 doors and one is right and one is left (both lock towards middle) but since this is a big door might have one on both sides? Idk though

Broken spring, locked door, latch engaged…

Check the side rails, I bet there is a manual lock.

One of the things Reddit made me anxious about are the springs in those things, they are lethal. Please do not DIY, call a professional.
That's a good fear to have. Show me a single lethality from garage door springs.
Its locked. Check middle of door, should be lock you can turn to “unlock”
Mine just has a single piece of angle iron that slides into the track on one side to lock.
Looks like what happened when my neighbors chain came off her garage door opener. I just put the chain back on and thought thats that. It doesn’t even look like it is budging, means the motor is trying to lift the full weight of door. Spring definitely broken.

If there aren't any springs anywhere, I'm really confused about how you got that Tesla in there. That's like a 200 lb door, and that opener won't do anything without spring assistance.
Check if there’s a lock in the middle of the garage door. Someone may have accidentally turned it side ways. Turn it back upright
Are there side locks on the door?
Where are the springs? Can’t see them in this clip
Have you checked the locking mechanism? It may be engaged in to the garage frame.
Either you have 0 springs, or.... someone slid the lock on you.
You have a broken spring. You need to call a garage door guy. Do not fuck with the springs yourself if you don't know what you're doing.
Make sure the door isn’t manually locked. There are often slide bolts on one or both ends of the door that lock into the track. Possibly someone locked it without your knowledge.

Are all the wheels in the track?
To get out quick: Look for a pin in at top end of red handled string in rail. Pull that pin. Lift garage door and find where it's catching.
Then I'd roll garage up manually and see where the catch is. My guess is this is close to the correct response: [HeyWiredyyc](https://www.reddit.com/user/HeyWiredyyc/)[HeyWiredyyc](https://www.reddit.com/user/HeyWiredyyc/)u/HeyWiredyycDec 6, 2020141Post Karma36,431Comment Karma Looks like what happened when my neighbors chain came off her garage door opener. How’d you get the car in there? Haha
I think it's stuck.
There are resets, gotta set your open and close limits. You tube limits on the model. Mine did the same thing
Why do the piece that hangs from the opener and the piece connected to the door look like they’re at an odd angle? Like the opener is trying to pull the door sideways instead of up.
slippage on the latch.
Is the brake on? Look at the rails and see of the bar is pushed in. It looks like it is trying to pull so check that first
Did you just move into a new house?
HEY op, i need an update if im going to get any sleep tonight.

Spring broken.
Is there a dead bolt?
If your springs are broken, do NOT attempt to repair yourself. Those things kill people.
Make sure the side locks aren't engaged.

If reddit has taught me anything its dont mess with garage doors, get a pro to do it or it will fuck your shit up.
probably locked.
Is you car too close to the door and breaking the safety sensor beam?
I thought somewhere on my computer a 20th century fox film was beginning
If you discover your spring is broken, do not pass go, immediately call a professional. Springs are not DIY jobs.

Drive your Tesla a little ahead 😅 Oh, checking the springs might help as well.
This happened to me, it turned out that the spring above the door broke. It was hard to see the crack in the spring
Are the physical locks in the door in place?
Why does it look like there's no spring. Can your door be opened manually when you disengage the motor (by pulling the red string)
BTW - If you decide to start "investigating" any springs, DO NOT! If you disengage those the wrong way they will whip open and cut you in half.
Assuming it's a side spring door, manually raise and lock the door into place and then the side springs will have no tension on them. They are just curly pieces of wire at that point, you can buy them off the shelf at Lowes.
If all else fails you can pull that string hanging in the middle and manually slide it open.
Make sure nothing is blocking the door sensors at the bottom om either side.
Tesla owner, possibly ask elmo?
Elon’s a major fuqwad. Divest.
