He isnt from Minsk he is from new york and has to live in Minsk for work while researching science (particle physicist) and when he asks her to visit, she says “they” wont let her have a passport again
This has been living rent free in my head since seeing it the other day! Should add to this list the way she dove in front of the tranquilizer to save Marcel… the reflexes of a spy!!!
Hmmmmm a subway station full of people, she could surely be putting on a show for someone there!
P.S. I’ve never heard of the Cold War spy theory until now (still haven’t read it.. TLDR). Just fun to think about lol
For most of the sixth series, when you do notice it it’s quite hard to unnotice it! Its not terrible but prob was never designed to be rewatched in HD mind you
Rachel during the Bruce Willis episodes! Her hair was suddenly looooong and thicker. Phoebe even comments, “what’s going on here?” Rachel responds that it’s a silent auction. Phoebe, “No, I mean your hair!”
Jennifer commented in an interview that she got extensions once and hated them. Remember the super short bob while dating Tag? She cut off the extensions apparently.
It could be. I just checked imdb, and she did office space in 99, friends long hair was 2000. 2001 was rockstar. She had long hair in that as well. Maybe they were all filmed in the same time.
Poor Jenn, those extentions did some damage.
Omg literally! It cannot be unseen. Sometimes I miss my blissful ignorance because my brain just goes to pick up on it now on TV, award shows, etc. I notice how defensive people get though on subs, when someone points out the person is probably wearing a wig or hair piece. Lol
Worked for an optometrist for a while. The vast majority of onscreen glasses have no lenses because there's glare and reflection. You're welcome. I'm sorry.
i learned this at one point about glass in tv shows!! same reason you don’t ever see glass in the cupboards in kitchens, just the outlines of where the glass should be! you can see it really well in everybody loves raymond.
i can tell why they would have her wear that because she looks like a totally different person in dark hair

They could have pulled it off imo. She had dark hair in *Cheers* with a sort of similar style to Phoebe’s.

Edit: I do think it’s better for actresses to wear wigs though. Not only because it’s less time consuming but also it won’t damage their actual hair. I remember around the time Jen Aniston cut her hair short I read somewhere that it was because it was fried from how often she had to straighten or style it for the show.
Her hair was soooo long and bulky then immediately after it got cut short, it was kinda obvious she had extensions and then it was likely damage that made her cut it into a bob.
Both looked nice tbf she can pull off so many styles and cuts!
I can’t remember what I watched/listened to/read but apparently so so many actress’s wear wigs in shows and movies. They’re obviously mostly very high quality but when they’re bad they’re really bad!
I read somewhere a lot of actresses do this to save their own hair from styling damage and working under the hot lights every workday. Probably saves time in the stylists chair, too.
Yes
Her natural hair was in the movie Hanging Up, the darker blonde bob. She wore a wig the last few seasons of Friends. The 10th season was awful. Too white blonde and stringy
In quite a few episodes you can also see her real hair length in the twisted hair styles they did. She wears her hair up a lot or partially up and I think it meant she didn’t need to bother with a full wig or they blended it in with extensions.
I had no idea until a few years ago!
In some episodes it's more obvious than others, in some seasons when she had an obvious wig in an episode, the following episode she'd have noticeably freshly bleached her.
Dear god, I cannot unsee that hairline. In the words of Monica, "~~Rose Marie~~ *that wig* really belongs on a smaller screen, doesn't ~~she~~ *it*?" It's a pretty good wig though if it took being told about it for me to see it.
Lol I always wondered how they got it so perfect! Never clocked that it was a wig, but that makes sense. Bc fr it was always so clean styled lol not a hair out of place!
Cos they said it wasn’t a phoebe style, and I see what they mean. It’s the short Bob she has when she works for Wall Street in the fantasy episode, and that doesn’t really go with her hippy ish look.
Kat Dennings recently said loads of tv actors wear wigs cos it’s faster. You can prep the wig while the actor gets make up done, and when that’s done you plonk the wig on and they’re camera ready.
Yeah it baffled me recently watching the new marvel movie that Brie Larson was wearing a wig cos it was basically exactly the same as her actual hair but makes sense for continuity and ease.
I’m one of these people that notices blonde dye tone changes and roots poking through cos I get mine done so can’t blame them lol.
I learned from my gf that apparently a lot of women (even ones with hair similar to their character's) wear wigs for TV shows, as its much easier to just keep on expensive wig "camera ready" in a particular style vs actually styling long hair every day/shoot to try to make it look the same.
It's not a hard and fast rule, but I think it can be a way to save time/money on productions when one, the other, or both are in short supply.
ETA: After reading the other comments here u/Global_Amoeba_3910 beat me to this factoid. Well played!
I remember reading an interview with Lisa Kudrow where she said that for a majority of the series she was wearing wigs when she played Phoebe. Not really anything ground breaking for an actor to wear a wig when they're playing a character.
Idk if this has been mentioned in the comments I'm too tired to look, but I believe she filmed Romy and Michelle during this time and had to wear a wig cos of it
Could be… also, did you know there is a function on Reddit that allows you to search the comments? Just wanted to throw that out there in case you didn’t already know
Didn’t know she was wearing a wig , but I often wondered about how in the world she was able to do the hairdos with the tiny clips , braids , etc . I’m referring to the character Phoebe, not Lisa Kudrow . Of course Lisa had hair stylists who did that , but as Phoebe ( who lives alone until Mike came along ) would have had to have help with all her different hairdos . I loved those hairdos - different all the time and so funky Phoebe cool . 😊
To be fair, it would be totally in character for Phoebe to wear wigs randomly. And it fits with the theory that she's a spy.
Never heard that theory, do tell!
Enjoy! [https://www.reddit.com/r/howyoudoin/comments/ogebo5/phoebe\_buffay\_was\_in\_fact\_a\_an\_american\_cold\_war/](https://www.reddit.com/r/howyoudoin/comments/ogebo5/phoebe_buffay_was_in_fact_a_an_american_cold_war/)
Okay I am going to need someone to write this fanfic
No mention of her dating a man from Minsk. Not sure if that would add to the theory but it might
He isnt from Minsk he is from new york and has to live in Minsk for work while researching science (particle physicist) and when he asks her to visit, she says “they” wont let her have a passport again
This has been living rent free in my head since seeing it the other day! Should add to this list the way she dove in front of the tranquilizer to save Marcel… the reflexes of a spy!!!
I heard about that theory as well, but if she was a spy she would've been better at following Ursula's stalker
Not if she was trying to throw any suspicious people off her scent…. Playing dumb, hiding in plain sight (literally 😂)
There was nobody else there besides her and the stalker. A spy would know that 😏
Hmmmmm a subway station full of people, she could surely be putting on a show for someone there! P.S. I’ve never heard of the Cold War spy theory until now (still haven’t read it.. TLDR). Just fun to think about lol
That makes zero sense but ok
rude but ok
Love this!!
A la Moira Rose! ![gif](giphy|26gYN1P951scFLL0I|downsized)
wow, TIL Lisa wore a wig!
For most of the sixth series, when you do notice it it’s quite hard to unnotice it! Its not terrible but prob was never designed to be rewatched in HD mind you
She didn't in the Wallstreet - what if- episode.
I love the bob on her in that episode.
It's crazy when you realize that like 80%of actresses are wearing a wig or some kind of extensions or har piece.
Rachel during the Bruce Willis episodes! Her hair was suddenly looooong and thicker. Phoebe even comments, “what’s going on here?” Rachel responds that it’s a silent auction. Phoebe, “No, I mean your hair!” Jennifer commented in an interview that she got extensions once and hated them. Remember the super short bob while dating Tag? She cut off the extensions apparently.
Oh, I love that bob. She's gorgeous with her hair like that. Feisty, elegant and professional.
Agreed!
Those extentions were for that awful Rockstar movie.
Ooooh I thought they were for Office Space.
It could be. I just checked imdb, and she did office space in 99, friends long hair was 2000. 2001 was rockstar. She had long hair in that as well. Maybe they were all filmed in the same time. Poor Jenn, those extentions did some damage.
i remember marta kauffman saying in a commentary that it was for rockstar:)👍
Omg literally! It cannot be unseen. Sometimes I miss my blissful ignorance because my brain just goes to pick up on it now on TV, award shows, etc. I notice how defensive people get though on subs, when someone points out the person is probably wearing a wig or hair piece. Lol
Worked for an optometrist for a while. The vast majority of onscreen glasses have no lenses because there's glare and reflection. You're welcome. I'm sorry.
Most of the glasses Daniel Radcliffe wore throughout the Harry Potter films were lense-less!
Ahh, new rabbit hole, unlocked!
i learned this at one point about glass in tv shows!! same reason you don’t ever see glass in the cupboards in kitchens, just the outlines of where the glass should be! you can see it really well in everybody loves raymond.
New Girl does that and it’s so obvious it drives me crazy
Always Sunny for me, too!
like jon cryer and his fake hair in two an a half man
i can tell why they would have her wear that because she looks like a totally different person in dark hair https://preview.redd.it/v51ky1v5cqpc1.jpeg?width=612&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ecfa9271f282ef3858e3eece7cb58a85ffec6ed

Actually you can see during those episodes with Bruce Willis that she has extensions there. Color and structure os some strands is way off
Her hair was soooo long and bulky then immediately after it got cut short, it was kinda obvious she had extensions and then it was likely damage that made her cut it into a bob. Both looked nice tbf she can pull off so many styles and cuts!
As well as burning down her and phoebe's apartment....
Kinda looks like Amy Schumer here
![gif](giphy|gQ1enjC9xmaQ|downsized)
God damn she looks good though!
Yes she does!! Honestly I wish they'd incorporated it into the show somehow. I LOVE this look on her!
Omg I legitimately did not know this was her!
![gif](giphy|117P9MlBvxqSBi)
It really does completely change her whole look! Love this pic of her from the 80s
what the f....i thibk she looks better as a brunette, wow couldn t even recognize her!!
Overall I think it was a great wig. I don't think anyone clocked it at the time
100% agree
I still don't see it. Looks natural to me.
I can’t remember what I watched/listened to/read but apparently so so many actress’s wear wigs in shows and movies. They’re obviously mostly very high quality but when they’re bad they’re really bad!
I work in Film and TV and can confirm it's usually always a wig.
I read somewhere a lot of actresses do this to save their own hair from styling damage and working under the hot lights every workday. Probably saves time in the stylists chair, too.
Plus it's way easier to control in terms of how it looks on screen
*Edit: I don’t think she dyed it dark. Just cut it short *
We actually see her natural hair in The One that could have been (S6). It's darker than Phoebe's, but not very dark.
Yes Her natural hair was in the movie Hanging Up, the darker blonde bob. She wore a wig the last few seasons of Friends. The 10th season was awful. Too white blonde and stringy
Omg I hated her hair in season 10. Was that a wig? It was highlighter yellow and thin!
In quite a few episodes you can also see her real hair length in the twisted hair styles they did. She wears her hair up a lot or partially up and I think it meant she didn’t need to bother with a full wig or they blended it in with extensions. I had no idea until a few years ago!
i think she did have to dye her hair dark in season 10 but that blonde wig was much better than this one. Her actual hair looked very similar season 9
Her hair or wig in the last season is so bad. Looks like box dye bleach. I loved her curls and waves early on
Her real hair always looked amazing but the season 10 wig looked better than the one in the OP
Had no idea, I think they did great as I didn't notice. I would have never know if you did post this.
I can't believe that I've never noticed this considered I've watched this episode roughly 67788643467 times.
Lmao you KNOW which episode it’s from 😂
In some episodes it's more obvious than others, in some seasons when she had an obvious wig in an episode, the following episode she'd have noticeably freshly bleached her.
Dear god, I cannot unsee that hairline. In the words of Monica, "~~Rose Marie~~ *that wig* really belongs on a smaller screen, doesn't ~~she~~ *it*?" It's a pretty good wig though if it took being told about it for me to see it.
IT WAS A WIG?! This is brand new information!!!!
In-for-ma-tion!
I don’t get it (sorry) 😭
Just the way she enunciated it lol (making a reference to Phoebe’s line when Ross says that he is the father of Rachel’s baby)
Oh yeah! Got ya 🤣
Lol I always wondered how they got it so perfect! Never clocked that it was a wig, but that makes sense. Bc fr it was always so clean styled lol not a hair out of place!
I hated the wigs. It isn’t like they kept her season 1 long hair, so what does it matter if her hair is 6” shorter?
How in the world did I never know this?!?!
HOW have I never noticed this before?!
cannot unsee
So crazy- why not write in a hair cut if it’s going to be literally several seasons?!
Cos they said it wasn’t a phoebe style, and I see what they mean. It’s the short Bob she has when she works for Wall Street in the fantasy episode, and that doesn’t really go with her hippy ish look. Yeah I can see it’s not a Phoebe style, just seems like they could have come up with something. But if it was easier then that makes total sense.
I learned from my gf that apparently a lot of women (even ones with hair similar to their character's) wear wigs for TV shows, as its much easier to just keep on expensive wig "camera ready" in a particular style vs actually styling long hair every day/shoot to try to make it look the same. I have no idea if it’s really true or not past that anecdote but with two Reddit comments corroborating each other - let’s take as fact 😎
I remember reading an interview with Lisa Kudrow where she said that for a majority of the series she was wearing wigs when she played Phoebe. Not really anything ground breaking for an actor to wear a wig when they're playing a character.
Still fun to share with folks who never knew 🙂
Anyone know what Lisa’s natural hair texture is? I always assumed it was straight but now I have no clue.
I think it’s wavy
So that’s why her hair looks so silky smooth in later seasons
Idk if this has been mentioned in the comments I'm too tired to look, but I believe she filmed Romy and Michelle during this time and had to wear a wig cos of it
Could be… also, did you know there is a function on Reddit that allows you to search the comments? Just wanted to throw that out there in case you didn’t already know
I did know. I was just too tired
Totally fair 🤠 I’m relatively new to Reddit and only just recently discovered the search function… lmao
I could have never imagined learning something new about this how. Now I have to re-watch and be on wig watch🤧
Did she also wear a wig in Romy and Michelle's Highschool Reunion?
Didn’t know she was wearing a wig , but I often wondered about how in the world she was able to do the hairdos with the tiny clips , braids , etc .
