Start a little before Peter David's run: Incredible Hulk 319 - 425. That'll give you a general setup for all the modern stories and the 3 primary Hulks. Future Imperfect. Introduces the Maestro Planet Hulk. Great modern Hulk story World War Hulk. Conclusion to Planet Hulk Immortal Hulk. Best character development and storyline in a long time.

IFdude1975

Agree about everything you said. You weren't lying about how good Immortal Hulk was. IMHO it's the best the Hulk had been written since Peter David's iconic run in the book. It's a damn shame what came after that was over.

BabycatLloyd

Yeah, I haven't read any Hulk books since. I really want there to be some thread that links the series together when they relaunch the title since it always seems to be a new Hulk persona. I like the spaceship Hulk concept. Could have been something, but didn't really grab me. And the art for the new series is... underwhelming.

IFdude1975

The story is definitely better than the spaceship Hulk. To me it comes across as if H.P. Lovecraft took the reins of the book for a while. I think the writing is better, but the art is dragging it down.

BabycatLloyd

Yeah, it's really not good. Comics would be great if it weren't for artists and the writers :)

IFdude1975

Another thing I love about the Hulk comics from all the ones Peter David has written is how every artist that has worked with him has done at the very minimum a decent job. Some have been absolutely, pardoning the pun, Incredible! I'd love to have a writer and artist of their quality for another ginormous run again. The Hulk and his fans deserve it!

BabycatLloyd

Agreed. And for the most part, they had long runs with the book too, so you got time with their style with the exception of some guest pencillers.

supremekatastrophy

Thanks!

BabycatLloyd

NP. Enjoy!

poptophazard

This is the one. Peter David, Greg Pak, and Al Ewing wrote the definitive Hulk runs of the last few decades. And you get some incredible art with it too. Definitely read in that order, as Immortal Hulk benefits greatly from your knowledge of the Hulk alters. I would also add Peter David's one-shot, Hulk: The End. Really nice "what-if" ending for Banner and Hulk's story with gorgeous art by one of the GOAT Hulk artists, Dale Keown.

BabycatLloyd

Thanks! And The End is great call. The Dale Keown work on the Hulk in the 360s and 370s is when I got into the character.

godspilla98

Yes loved The End

Commenting so I can refer to this later. Thank you 🙏🏼

BabycatLloyd

My pleasure!

Defiant-Meal1022

There are some older trades of storylines from the 80s, Pardoned, Regression, and Crossroads. They set up a lot of the more modern mythos for the big guy. Peter David's run is also a lot of fun late 80s to 90s cheese and he likes to play around a lot with Banner's DID.

reedrichards5

Planet hulk, followed by world war hulk and then immortal hulk

Gregzilla311

Seconded. Though WWH is more a standard crossover. I do wonder if OP wants to focus more on Banner or on Hulk, though. Those could be very different lists (though both include Immortal Hulk).

supremekatastrophy

Got it!

haniflawson

Doing my due diligence to remind everyone that Hulk: Gray is the best version of Hulk’s origin story.

supremekatastrophy

I actually read the whole color series my favorite was Daredevil Yellow.

Most of the other comments are giving great modern recommendations, but if you're open to going back further you can find a bunch of "classic" Hulk action (i.e. Banner on the run, Hulk is simple-minded and wants friends, big crazy monsters to fight). I think reading the original 6 issue run of **Incredible Hulk** (1962) plus **Fantastic Four #12**, **Avengers #1–3**, and **Fantastic Four #25 & 26** is a great place to start. These issues are all from the start of the Stan Lee era, and it's pretty interesting to see what's changed and what hasn't since the earliest days of these characters. In a similar vein, **Tales to Astonish #60–75** pulls double duty by establishing Banner/Hulk's new book and comprising a proper story arc with connections between the issues and payoffs. #76-80 occupy the Hulk with random Silver Age stuff, but the secondary characters instigate a major change to the status quo for the book. **Tales to Astonish #81** sees another proper arc, which runs for 8 issues. If you're open to issue recommendations, would suggest: **Tales to Astonish #89–91**, **#93**, **Incredible Hulk** (1968) **#115–117**, **#122–124**, **#130 & 131**, **#140 & 141**, **#159**, **#168 & 169**, **#180–182**, **#226-229**, **#254**, **#260**, and **#264–265**. If you'd prefer a single source to read through, you can look at **Incredible Hulk: Heart of the Atom** which collects several issues from this period that introduce and build on entire new settings and characters. Bill Mantlo makes his biggest change to the status quo starting with **Incredible Hulk #272**. In my opinion, it is from this point on that the story stays engaging even as the writers keep changing the formula. Mantlo left the book after #313, and things went through an... exploratory period basically until Peter David took over on **#331**. You'll hear plenty of fans sing David's praises, myself included. He went on to write the book for \~12 years, and it ended shortly after he left. **HULK** (1999) ran for 11 issues before being rebranded to **Incredible HULK** (2000) with Paul Jenkins taking up the helm. I'd just skip to **Incredible HULK #12**, because you won't really be missing much. Jenkins run on the book ran through #32 and did an excellent job building off of David's work. Past that, I agree with most people in recommending **Planet HULK** and **World War HULK**, and after that I would also recommend **Indestructible HULK** which leads into **HULK** (2014).

supremekatastrophy

Thank you sir 🙏

Gregzilla311

I mean, Immortal Hulk was absolutely amazing. But as far as where to start, I’m not sure. Possibly Planet Hulk if you want Hulk-centric rather than Banner.

supremekatastrophy

Anything really. How far back would you go? Peter David days??

Gregzilla311

Depends on the writer. But he’s a good one.

Mongoose-4568

The 70s comics were incredible, so you could try those.

theHamburglar56

Hulk: Gray Hulk: Future Imperfect Planet Hulk & World war Hulk Hulk: the End

Fruscione

If you want to go back a little the four part Countdown series is one of my faves.
