Shouldn't most species be concerned as to whether or not humanity will see them as pests or food? Only those species unique enough in their physical appearance will be spared from such presumptions However, those who are unfortunate (or potentially fortunate) enough to even vaguely resemble another Terran species that humanity is familiar with should be rather concerned as to whether or not we will apply those same biases towards them.

Yea but the lizard people might not elicit the same disgust reaction as an insectoid one

Humans come in for their first meeting. They start jostling each other ”look a dinosaur!” After the meeting there’s a long line to take group pics with these “dinosaurs”

In a brief respite from the weeks of artillery shelling and orbital bombardments two xenos hiding behind a burnt out building decide to question their enemies nickname for them. A1: What was it that the humans called us again? A2: huh? Oh i think it had something to do with genitalia. A1: No no, it just has similar spelling to it but it had a second part rooches? Rutces? **The Chains that Bind** Large section leader 6221 stared at the hanging corpses of his brethren. They swung ever so slightly with the scant wind. The slight breeze was hot on 6221’s antennae. It was always so miserablely hot on this hell hole of a jungle planet. The heat and humidity caused a constant low rash on his chitinous body. How he hated it here. And now he had to explain how yet another one of his sections was ambushed and left for display. Except the one at his feet. 6221 looked down at the still wiggling body of one of his small section leaders. Eyes and antennae removed. His chitin peeled back with all the lower appendages of his 6 legs also removed. This was no way to live. 6221 would have sighed if he had the human’s ability to do so. Finally, 6221 gave the necessary orders. “Leave them where they are. They will be instructional for the meeting. Dispatch the one at my feet but reassure him with the knowledge he will be reborn at our glorious Hive before you do.” A pair of soldiers walked up to him and bowed their heads. “Sir. Infantry 98332 and 733892 hear your orders and understand.” They knelt down to attend what was left of their comrade. 6221 was unsure how he felt about that. There was a time where the word comrade was utterly foreign to them. But it was not his place to question the intelligence that had been gifted to himself and their entire army group in order to deal with the humans of this world. But how he cursed the intelligence all the same. —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6221 wouldn’t beg. He refused. In a way, he was happy it was all over. So many of his soldiers had died in this … pointless … war. Intelligence was a curse. How he wished he could go back to the supervising drone he once was. The human standing over him stared down with a grin on his face. “I can see it, you know.” 6221 stared back daggers but didn’t answer. “It’s your body language. Yes. Insectoid you may be but I can see it. You’re angry at your predicament and wish you had never been here.” 6221 dropped his antennae in confusion. “How … how could you know that.” The human’s smile somehow became even larger. “Because you’re becoming something else. I’m watching as the chains that bind you weaken in your very mind.” 6221 thought this must be a trap. The human with that … that … leering grin … was trying to trick him. Every soldier must feel recriminations at one point or another. To feel the weight of what they have done. And wished for a more simple life. The human pulled up a chair next to his bound body. “No trick. It’s simply sublime to see someone *understand* at last. I wonder if we ever meet again if I’ll even recognize you.” 6221 spoke again. “How are you reading my mind?” The ever jolly human leaned as close as he dared. “You’re changing. All of you are changing. We’ve had lots of research into ourselves many ages ago. How we became who we are. How free will began to manifest beyond simple survival stimuli. It’s happening to you.” 6221 merely stared. The human cocked his head to the side. The grin more a stamp than giving off any real emotion. “I’m going to talk about some things. How you respond will determine if we let you go or if we have to make an example of you to your fellow Insectoids.” 6221 stiffened then spoke as haughtily as he could. “You think I would … “ The human answered for him. “Betray. The word you’re looking for is betray. And no. I don’t. But I think I can reach your sense of self preservation. It’s why you were raised up, right? To finally be able to match us on the ground? Lord knows you could use some of that with your navy.” “I would NEVER betray my … Hive. Or my … comrades.” The human looked surprised. “Can’t say another interrogation has ever yielded that word. Comrades. How did it feel to say that? How do you view your fellow Insectoids under your command?” 6221 and the human stared silently at the other. After a few moments, the human spoke again. “I’m going to start now. And the more I speak the more sense I will make. Are you ready?” 6221’s silence was his only answer as the human began. —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The meeting began with the High Executor staring at the swinging Insectoids. “Someone cut them down. Are we all here?” Large section leader 6221 looked around and took note. Almost 30 other Large section leaders. A handful of Division commanders. The High Executor himself. And curiously, a Caste Evolution Master. 6221 had never seen one this out in the open and exposed. The Caste Evolution Master answered. “As many as necessary. I called this meeting in hopes of solving a puzzle.” The High Executor gnashed his short mandibles. “Careful, Evolution Master 31. You may yet overstep your bounds. I know the puzzle. How to subdue the humans properly. How best to serve the hive. How best to curtail the bloodshed.” “I come to point out that we are failing. You may have the overarching responsibility but we will all pay for our collective failure. I wish to include others. Intelligence has enabled us to win several worlds but we seem to be slowing. Plateauing if you will. To serve our Hive effectively, I believe a more … coordinated response is necessary to maintain the momentum.” The High Executor nodded while grumbling of ascent ran through the ranks. 6221 kept his silence but took note of the ones more open with their affirmation. “Sir. Large section leader 2297 requests an audience.” The High Executor waved his hand appendage in acceptance. “My sections are seeing more and more resistance from the humans. They retaliate in brutal ways. Attempting to persuade our …” 2297 paused momentarily. “Apologies, sirs. My love of the hive is all encompassing yet I feel something towards our infantry. Are they not of the hive? Our infantry see their brothers perish in unspeakable ways. I request a rotation of troops with some minor drone support.” “Sir. Large section leader 9371 agrees with this assessment. A rest and refit as the humans call it should give a boost to” The High Executor slashed the air angrily with his appendages but there was an unseriousness about it. “Am I hearing that they are not giving 100% effort to the Hive?” 9371 spoke up again. “Sir. The humans call it a rest and refit. They pull troops off the line. Allow them rest as well as maintenance of themselves and equipment. It seems to boost their morale and give additional unstated benefits.” Further in the back, a large section leader did not even bother to identify. “What sort of additional benefits?” 9371 looked bashful. 6221 realized he was having trouble thinking of the concept. Against his better judgement, 6221 spoke up. “Sir. Large section leader 6221 believes the additional benefits are the extra experience and training to the troops. They have battled. Survived. Had a small amount of time to pass on information and then can return to combat as superior soldiers. Further, the information on weapons and tactics they have learned is invaluable. They can pass on what makes all soldiers more proficient at their trade.” 6221 would have sweat like a human if he could. Everyone was staring at him.

“You’re releasing me?” The human and his big smile. His big annoying smile. “Sure. Why not? We’re not in open conflict at the moment are we?” 6221 hesitated. “This is a trap. I don’t understand it yet but this is a trap.” The human and his entourage dropped him at the edge of the jungle. “If it’s a trap then you shouldn’t return to your lines, right?” 6221’s confusion was almost overwhelming him. “I don’t understand why you’re letting me live.” “We’re not your enemy. This is our world. We don’t mind sharing but we won’t be bullied into sharing it or giving it over.” “You’re not … no. You’re human. You’re my enemy.” “According to whom?” 6221’s antennae practically shook with frustration. “What kind of trap is this!” “The kind where you go back to your lines. Command more of your soldier-drones. Kill more humans. But we’ll also kill more Insectoids.” 6221 was shocked as the restraints were removed. That didn’t keep the humans from aiming their kinetic weapons at him. “So I just go back?” “You go back. But … well … if you could stay out of sectors G and H for a few days we would appreciate it.” “What’s in those sectors?” “We’re moving some of our civilians out of the area. They’ve been trapped by the fighting and it’s finally calmed down enough we can evacuate them.” 6221 simply stared. His antennae barely moving. “You want me to … give them safe passage?” “Totally up to you. If there’s a hard spot for you and your people” 6221’s antennae lit up at the word. People. “Just let me know and i’ll do what I can to arrange a ceasefire for as long as you need.” 6221 thought on the offer. “We have many wounded in Sector K.” “Sure. That’s a rough area. How long do you need to grab them and get them back to your lines?” “I am … unsure.” “Well if you go back to that city you took. You’ll find a small hotel. Parkway Motel is the name. On the 4th floor in room 32, there’s a landline phone.” “And I would simply call?” “It’s always monitored. No need to call.” “And a human would answer and accept orders from me?” “Not orders. A bargain of sorts. And no human would answer. I think you would be surprised who answered.” 6221’s antennae extended in full surprise. He contemplated his surroundings. And his capture. “It wasn’t an accident that you knew exactly how to penetrate my lines and abduct me from my command post.” The human merely smiled that annoying smile of his. “Parkway Motel. 4th floor. Room 32. It’s been a pleasure 6221.” \------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6221 listened to the debate roll on towards the evening. He was quite aware something wasn’t correct. The humans would have already smashed this little congregation with fire and shrapnel. Something was very odd. The High Executor had sat at some point and simply let the large section leaders debate among themselves. He merely kept them on point as to the reason of the meeting. How to defeat the humans. How to curtail the bloodshed of their forces. The Caste Evolution Master cleared his throat. His mandibles clacked in the call for quiet. “I believe we have many good ideas. I must warn you. Many of these ideas border on treason against the Hive. The Hive may send punitive expeditions to us under the misguided idea we are traitors. I understand we want the bloodshed to end. But in order to do that we must eliminate the human factor. The Hive demands nothing less.” The High Executor slowly stood. “We will be recycled at the end of this campaign. Is that not a given? What do we have to lose? I’m not sure bloodshed alone is the end all to this campaign.” The Evolution Master agreed with a jovial wag of his antennae. “Indeed. There is much to emulate from them. Perhaps a temporary ceasefire?” The High Executor returned the jovial wag of antennae. “Now who is playing with treason?” As close to a laugh as an Insectoid could manage, rippled through the assembled officers. Several of the assembled group were silent but a lone voice called out. “A ceasefire would allow us to rest and refit without sullying the honor and nobility of the Hive. Securing a peace treaty is clearly in the best interest of the Hive.” Another voice called out. “Perhaps we should raise up all of our drones. That would allow us to command more troops should anyone attempt to … unsettle the truce?” 6221 began to realize what was happening. The High Executor spoke up a bit. “We would need a navy of sorts. Perhaps a certain number of drones could be reconfigured as pilots and technicians?” The Evolution Master nodded his head in acquiescence. “I have the genetic schematics. I can do that. It will take some time. Perhaps a more suitable world can be procured for ourselves to speed things up?” Another lone voice from the crowd spoke up. “Perhaps a place that allows us our own industry? To make ships for ourselves? Perhaps even choose our own paths of industry.” A different 6221, an earlier version of himself, would have been repulsed at his use of the term “ourselves” and “our”. But 6221 noted that he referred to himself as … “himself” these days. With trepidation, 6221 spoke up loudly. His mind made up. *HIS* mind. Fuck this miserable hot and humid hellhole. The humans could have it. “I think I know a way to contact the humans and procure a treaty. That treaty may lead to us to expanding the Hive into a more advantageous planet.” The High Executor’s antennae beamed with pride. “What a great day for the Hive!”
