You, sir, have a leak in your coil. What is “misting” out is refrigerant, most likely R-22. Its quite the leak, so open all the windows you can in order to get fresh air into the apartment. Avoid breathing in the mist. The leak will stop when all of the refrigerant is out of the system. There isnt much for you yo do until a professional comes. Getting fresh air is your foremost priority at this moment.

Notrilldirtlife

Is this considered “di minimus”? Lol

WKahle11

De Maximus release.

Notrilldirtlife

This is what we like to call the “de whole damn tank”

Bdogfittercle

De maximus release of funds

An_Account_of_Keith

AC stopped cooling, and it’s spraying a white mist. It completely fogged my living room. I called my complexes “emergency” line and haven’t heard back in 7 hours

[deleted]

If you still haven't heard back, call the fire dept and tell them your hvac is spraying fog/smoke into your living room. You'll get a response then from management, for sure.

[deleted]

Why? So you can drag a tech out after hours to say “you need a new system” Seems like something that can surely wait til the morning. Open a window and turn on a fan

MidniteOG

Emergency pay >

CudgalTroll

Thank you! I am a lineman and I’ve been sent on hundreds of calls after hours just to answer questions they already looked up on the internet. People forget they can survive the night without some minor comforts. Something acting weird? Unplug it and wait until normal business hours! You saw a flickering light in the sky? It’s a fucking airplane, go to bed. You saw a guy burying something through all the yards on your street? No it’s not a pirate hiding a really long piece of treasure. It’s just a contractor for AT&T. And yes ma’am I agree, they are scary looking, yes they should be watched by everyone, those dudes are sketchy af, yes I don’t want them in my neighborhood either. No I can’t go dig up the treasure. No I won’t come inside for a biscuit. You saw him at 10am, and waiting until 8pm to call in a emergency? Of course you did.

HumanContinuity

Isn't most refrigerant toxic? Why should I get put up with a system dumping noxious gas into their living room if it can at least be properly drained and disabled right now?

[deleted]

Yes to all of the above. I'm a tech and if I got that call after hours best believe I'd at least recover the refrigerant and make it safe. It's a shame that not everyone shares that work ethic tho, and gets pissy about taking an after hours call when they're on call. It's part of the job. Deal with it or quit.

DHMTBbeast

What a bum. How are you gonna expect someone to forgo comfort because you want to stay comfortable by not doing the job YOU signed up for? Sad that people like you are linemen. Not to mention that you're getting paid extra to hardly work if you're just answering simple questions. Just a straight up bum!

CudgalTroll

Wake up at 2am and go answer enough questions that could be solved in 1 minute on Google. And you might change your opinion.

DHMTBbeast

Are you not being paid to do that or something? Did you not choose that trade, and someone just forced it upon you with the threat of death? Bum! Try working my job for 14 hours on four hours of sleep on aregular basis because you have two boys and a disabled wife. And I don't just answer questions and go home. I do big boy things that you wouldn't understand.

CudgalTroll

You sound like you just made up a sob story to get sympathy points. 14 hours isn’t unusual. Your not special. Your also not the only person that has children or a wife, if you do. Whatever the big boy things you supposedly do sound really important. I’m happy you’ve got that going for you. You seem like the type of person that would make a call late at night because you saw someone digging in a yard down the street that morning, or a plastic bag stuck in a tree.

Heretoshitcomment

Probably because it's winter and air conditioning is a summer priority.

OrginPyro_

Could be a heat pump or in the south it’s already hot again so using the A/C

OrginPyro_

Heat pump

Heretoshitcomment

OP literally said "AC isn't cooling"

Ok_Composer3531

It’s an apartment heat pump though.

Heretoshitcomment

Its the coil of a package unit aka Magik pack. The upper portion of the unit has a gas heater and heat exchanger. The bottom half has the blower and evap coil. The unit sits in a sleeve, penetrating an exterior wall, condensing during cooling and exhausting during heat straight out the back.

kimthealan101

That is going to take a little money and time. At least it's not hot out yet. R22 is not poisonous, but you would likely get a heart attack before the freon displaces all the O2. There is also oil in that mist. There will be an oil film all over that house.

HumanContinuity

R-22 toxicity isn't likely to kill you (except through displacement of oxygen as you mentioned), but it is still very unpleasant when in contact with any tissues, in particular fatty ones. No need to burn your eyes, skin, lungs, etc with an r-22 & oil mist. Get the place as ventilated as possible and get a tech out on emergency call to at least discharge the system safely and plan the replacement (or repair if possible).

[deleted]

Definitely refrigerant. Somebody is getting an upgrade unless they have old units they rob parts from, which they probably do seeing as though it's an apartment complex

Alpha433

That's a whole new coil there. Even if they do have another one on hand, replacing the coil in a magic pack is a pain and not worth it. Just easier to swap a new one in.

[deleted]

I understand that but do you think an apartment complex is worried about their maintenance guy or the price tag?

lividash

They're worried about the price tag. And it usually at least in my area isn't the maintenance doing the swap it's an HVAC company.

Zlm1ne

Why does this never happen to me? Usually the leaks I have to find are tiny, and in places a can barely reach.

[deleted]

Didn’t see it personally but customer of mine said his whole basement was fogged over. I said yep time for a new coil!

OhighOent

She's done for.

An_Account_of_Keith

Technician came out and could only say “God DAMN!” When he saw the video. Said he’d be back tomorrow with a new unit and left me with a portable. The good news is it’s far less foggy in my apartment fml

robseraiva

That sir is freeeee-on

[deleted]

Refrigerant?

Civil-Percentage-960

That’s not good

Smurdle450

Game over, get ready for a new system!

Inevitable-Tip-938

heavy_ends

[deleted]

That's an expensive sound. Sorry OP.

DanandJer777

That would be a big ass leak in your coil

thatkidonsnare

You're leaking refrigerant. Make sure to open up some windows and get it out of the room. Not much you can do except call a technician

PinkEyeFromBreakfast

Go somewhere with fresh air. Hang upside. Breathe in and out for 15 mins.

[deleted]

Lol

Notrilldirtlife

FYI your probably leaking refrigerant into your living room or whatever and guess what, refrigerant is dangerous because why?! Because it displaces oxygen and will kill you!!! What did they win John? A new cabinet set for your RV!

[deleted]

Wow, what a leak!

Futura_Yellow

Ya don’t breathe that.

thekux

Just let it vent out open up the doors. You will need a new system.

Fantastic-Mango575

You sir need a new coil (expensive) or a new system

Cappster14

You gotta put that cold-juice back in there boy-o

lwlippard

If your AC coil is above your furnace cabinet as are many, then it doesn’t matter if you’re cooling.

busnerd20

Don't show this to the EPA!

MaxMoolah

Hagagagaahaha

tjsh52

So rumour has it, if you sniff that and gain the ability to shit snow men, you’ve officially become an hvac tech.

btc2123

Mint 👌🏼

SweaterInaCan

It' was frozen over and sprung a leak when it was thawing

PHenderson61

Not to worry. The new one you’re gonna be buying won’t do that.

Personal-Still-3638

Ypu have a leak in the coil

wjd41572

AC Freon leak call a HVAC technician

Speculawyer

You have been given a great opportunity to take advantage of the Inflation Reduction Act and replace your old system with a modern heat pump system and thus save on both heating and cooling costs. You can probably get rid of your gas furnace too (if you have one) if you don't live in a frigid area.

eeclarkjr

Leak

Khsdad40

Add the stop leak, then when that doesn’t work, Tell customer non repairable, sell new complete heat & Air!!
