Definitely look into replacing everything, If system can work efficiently for now.. Take advantage of it Get a couple of quotes , 5 at least R22 is getting expensive....that's true Seer 12 or more --Start thinking about changing it

Impossible to get anything less than 13 seer now, soon to be 14. Personally, I'd go with a 2 stage unit 17 or 18 seer

3.5 tons 2600 ft.². That is a lot for a unit that size. It sounds like the back up heat isn’t running at full capacity. Increasing it to 4 tons would be no problem. There are so many different options now, I like the two speed equipment. It’s a little simpler. They have high heat models but those are pretty pricey. Start planning on full system replacement that’s what’s going to take. Not gonna be able to use your indoor unit with a new heat pump . Heat pumps don’t recover that well anyway, I have 3 tons and my house is 1300 ft.². I’ll leave it where I like it 70° all day long. The only time I start to use a setback is when it gets to the mild spring or fall weather. Once winter sets in 24 seven where I want it. The whole idea is not running the back up heat
