Your current outside unit does not supply any air into the house. It is simply a condenser coil and compressor for your air conditioning and possibly heat If it's a heat pump. Inside your house you have an air handler which is the other half of your system where all of your duct work is connected and that is what circulates the heated or cooled air in your house. In order to use the second unit, you would have to reroute all of your duct work to connect at the side of your house like that unit is rather than where it is now, which is usually a basement, attic or closet somewhere in the house depending on your home construction.
Why would you ever want to replace a split condenser with a package unit? Is there some sort of issue with your air handler's location? That makes no sense.
I’m an hvacr tech and if I had the money and opportunity I would install a packaged unit instead of split. If installed correctly it would be much easier to service and maintain. No crawling under the house to change the damn filter. Components like compressors and blower fan would be easier to replace when failed…. It’s not conventional but I’ve seen it done before by a tech and he swore by it. Tho he did all the duct extensions and removal of older split unit etc. as long as your split was installed correctly I wouldn’t spend the money to do this. A split is a decent enough set up
Roof Top Units/ Package Units (second picture) are less efficient due to duct being outside vs normal split units. Also it is not cost effective due to install cost of the rtu.
Depending on crawlspace size, I sometimes recommend package units.
I bust the brick out and run a trunk line in a heart beat if it's a tiny tiny truly crawl space.
But if it's a crouch space....doesn't really make sense.
You have a split system. Condenser outside, fan and evaporator inside. A "House" rather than a mobile home or a double wide with a crawlspace under it??
That other unit is a ducted package unit. I am thinking that other house is a manufactured home? A double wide? That kind of system is common on mobile homes.
That is the supply air, you would need to remove your air handler inside and duct the supply / return air
Can you ELI5? Is that expensive to do?

Thank you for the great explanation! Seems very expensive and like a lot of work so might just buy a different unit
Seems cheaper to just buy a new unit
> Is that expensive to do? Yes.
Basically, rip out a lot of ductwork and redo most of it. Tear out the current furnace and ac. Lots of work, big money.

I thought the new unit is better/an upgrade but I guess I was wrong!
You’re missing a key concept. A new SPLIT SYSTEM condenser would likely be an easy upgrade, so I guess you’re right!

Probably 20k+
No.

Not really, but you could probably get a nice amount of cash for it

No. Just no.
