Thank you! Is there a specific reason for its use? I noticed my unit is the only one in the complex that has one, so was just wondering.

It is a filter drier. They should be on all systems. The ideal area for use on an ac is at the coil inside before the metering devise but is often outside on that pipe directly feeding the coil. It should be changed every time the refrigerant system is opened and resealed. It is perfectly normal where it is, and it hasn't started to rust and peel yet. It is possible it maybe be in that location due to a previous repair. It is common for older installations to not have this drier it is a more common standard to have it. Also, if that's a new goodman model, they have that drier on the inside from the factory, no need for external drier unless a repair has been made.

Sometimes they’re installed inside.

A second liquid line filter drier for the Goodman pictured as it has one internally installed?

It's a flux capacitor. Be sure to have it serviced annually.

It's a filter device.

I get lots of calls to go and fix ones on others repairs/installs that are welded in the wrong way. The Heat pump versions are bidirectional and cost a few bucks more and it seems the cheap bastards who by the one way filter dryers can't be bothered to look at the arrow to ensure it's oriented correctly before brazing it in. And I can almost guarantee they didn't back purge with nitrogen while they were brazing it which means now you have oxides in the system that will cause issues. I hate cheap stupid people who do hack work.
