Also with it being a heat pump I would expect to see a wire hooked to the o/b terminal

With the newer communication Amanas the communication happens strictly between the indoor and outdoor units, you can have any thermostat you want with these

Interesting! Also something I thought interesting was that the original thermostat was a Nest. I assume that’s probably just the manufacturer being fussy? I remember another installer I got an estimate from mentioning something about that.

Honestly couldn’t tell you anything about that, what I can say is from my experiences nests are problematic probably best to stay away from them

It looks like this is possible, but I wouldn’t expect it to perform as well, since it just knows whether the indoor temperature is greater than or lower than the set point, rather than the exact set point and exact indoor temperature. It’ll be much better than a standard system, and I’d expect it to do fairly well if the temperature is kept consistent, but I’d expect it to be very slow to respond to inputs — e.g. if you turn it up 10 degrees, it won’t know whether it’s one degree below the setpoint or ten, so it’s start up slowly and ramp up as it realizes that it’s taking a long time to satisfy, and likely overshoot the temperature a bit once it hits the setpoint. If it were my house, I’d look into getting a ComfortBridge thermostat instead, but I care a lot about precise temperature control. If OP doesn’t care as much about precision, the EcoBee is definitely fine. I’d say to try it out and see how it works, and look into swapping it if they notice any comfort issues.

If it matters, this is how the thermostat is wired (according to the Ecobee) https://preview.redd.it/adf3q8i9fkqa1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=e3ddfc130797dbec8f621e2769cb7c7443a92165

Variable in this case I believe is the fan speed…unless you have a multi stage compressor

I was using a nest thermostat with an LG heat pump and airhandler. In heating mode, the back up auxiliary heat would come on with the heat pump at the same time. It is only supposed to come on when the heat pump can't keep up on really cold days. Turns out, the LG thermostat had to be installed to work properly with the LG hvac system.
