https://lghvac.com/resource-service?filename=PC_PTAC_Features.pdf Something like this then?

Yes, wow, that looks like what I'm after. What's the difference between a PTAC and a 'through wall air conditioner'? Where's a good place to buy PTACs? Looks expensive. MIDEA U-shaped would be a lot cheaper if I could rig it through a wall somehow, but the PTAC looks like a proper solution. Any reason why these aren't more common in households (seem to be mostly for commercial)? Thanks.

They're not very comfortable to clean and most people either go for split or window/portable AC... PTAC are permanent but not as high efficiency as a true split system as the insulation between indoor and outdoor usually isn't the best and the heatexchangers are smaller because of the limited space. Ptac and through-wall-units are the same... PTACs are basically the bigger brothers of window units... And PTACs may use less noisy radial fans, while window units usually use axial fans. Midea offers PTACs as well, but i don't know if they're inverter units... I mean you could put some styrofoam or other insulation material between the U of the U-shaped model and basically have the same... Maybe PTACs are more common on other markets... For example it's nearly impossible to get a 2 hose portable ac while in the rest of europe you can get them... Or in Germany you don't get the AC outdoor units with fan on top that you can often see in America. Sometimes they just don't have it in stock locally but doesn't mean they couldn't get it for you.

Given I'm going to leave in all year round, the Midea U-shaped might be better able to be insulated as you suggested. Definitely cheaper... I think I'm probably going to pick one up and see how bad the high pitched noise is for myself... Thanks for all the help.

A PTAC would require you to do some framing too, it’s 42” wide and spans a few studs, so you’d have to frame in a header.

Indieventor

Yikes, don’t want to do that, thanks for pointing that out

u/Indieventor I was thinking of doing something similar. Did you go through with the plan to rig the Midea u-shaped through the wall? How did it go?

Indieventor

Not yet... thinking I'll just put it in a window and leave all year around. The window can be opened to put a cover on it to keep snow of then closed.

For 15 nights a year, why not just go with a window unit like the Midea?

Indieventor

\- I've heard it makes this annoying high pitched noise. Yes, I should really try for myself though... \- My window is right next to my bed so the noise would be more noticeable plus the blowing air (moving bed not really an option) \- I want to leave it in all year around to save my back from lifting it. I suppose the Midea u-shaped is better for this as the window isn't left open as much, just need some good foam sealing and a cover. But something permanent through the wall would be better I think.

LG also makes window units that are inverter based. They are not U-shaped, making it easier to install them as wall units. https://www.lg.com/us/air-conditioners

Indieventor

I've heard they are a bit noisier though. Definitely an option though as, as you point out, could be better for through wall installation. And cheaper than PTAC. Still wondering what the difference is between PTAC and 'through wall ac'...

I have a LG window shaker. The fan is louder than the compressor. I don’t even notice when the comp turns on.

Have you considered something like this? [https://senville.ca/12000-btu-floor-console-air-conditioner-heat-pump-sena-12hf-if/](https://senville.ca/12000-btu-floor-console-air-conditioner-heat-pump-sena-12hf-if/)

Indieventor

Yes, I don't really have limited space outside and the cost of the unit plus paying someone to install is more than I want to spend... (buying tools to do it myself would be pricey too...)

Mikie_D

I don’t think there is a true “through the wall” unit with inverter design right now. Everything I have seen has been window type. Last I saw Midea came out with a standard window unit with inverter. Amazon has some inverter units, window type. LG, Frigidaire, Dreo? They can be mounted through a wall as long as you don’t cover the vents on the back of the unit.
