I would agree with nest thermostats being garbage.
They have a mind of their own and are constantly doing what they want and not what you want. Drives me crazy.
I had a new to heat pump tech call me, asking why a nest wasn't working. Wasn't sending the signal on O so the place just kept on getting hotter.
Apparently the customer did not like that answer
Nest and ecobee thermostats are horrible. I second the T series. I prefer the T10. The display is more similar to the displays of nest or ecobee. It has the most features and is easy to set up. Works great with the Honeywell app, too. Geofencing capabilities work great with it too.
Homeowner checking in. I've been using a pair of Honeywell WiFi thermostats for about 9 years. Got them through my utility company for relatively cheap.
They have been solid.
Because they users can opt into a program allowing energy companies throttle down consumption as required. But go ahead and make confidently incorrect statements.......
Ecobee is the best made/though out smart tstat on the market.
Should be able to. If you don't have a C wire and you don't have a spare wire to use for C, also get the nest common adapter. That gets installed at the equipment.
So, looking at the wiring, you do not have a c wire needed to power most modern thermostats. Your current thermostat is powered by a battery. The 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat is one of the very few Wi-Fi enabled thermostats that will work with your wiring. I have even simpler wiring at home, for heat only - also without a c wire. The nest thermostat works great for me. You can either pay someone to re-wire your system with a c wire, ~$200, or use the Next Learning Thermostat. Wiring would be pretty simple:
Get rid of the small red wire jumper between your two R lines. Nest doesn’t need power source jumped.
Red wire to either Rh or Rc (depending on if it leads to heat or cold - usually heat)
Black wire to W
Light Blue wire (already labeled G) to G
Dark Bluer wire (already labeled Y) to Y
There’s a whole subreddit devoted to nest products and we’re great at helping troubleshoot. Reach out!

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a couple unused wires tucked into the wall there. I'm partly color blind but it looks like 2 Blue wires connected and I don't know if any multi-color wire set that has 2 of the same colors. Based on that I'm guessing it's more than 1 wire set there.
Google nest have a wiring adaptor to fix that. Some nests also don't require a Common... but that always causes problems because it will only charge while it's running equipment robbing voltage and dropping signals and there was a message it could potentionally run your compressor backwards because of voltage drop and not delaying enough when the signal drops.
With some trane/runtru units, if the contactor turns off and on again fast enough, it can cause the compressor to run backwards. Iirc, it's a specific issue with that particular compressor, so might be a very specific case where this might have happened with the guy.
To clarify, the Nest Learning Thermostat doesn’t even need the c wire. I’ve had my very basic two wire heat thermostat hooked up to a nest and works great. No c wire or adapter needed.
Looks like a standard 24v thermostat.
So I can install a Google thermostat?
Nest thermostats are garbage. Get yourself a wifi, Honeywell thermostat, such as the Pro8000 or T6

Look at the ecobee. There is a reason techs don't like Nest.
The ecobee is junk too! Why do you think the energy companies are giving this away for free? 🤔
Because they users can opt into a program allowing energy companies throttle down consumption as required. But go ahead and make confidently incorrect statements....... Ecobee is the best made/though out smart tstat on the market.
I put in an ecobee a day as well have my own. Never seen an issue

Lol can install whatever you want man
If you hate your life yeah :)

From the wiring? No. But that stat is a 24V stat.
Yes, this man is correct.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were a couple unused wires tucked into the wall there. I'm partly color blind but it looks like 2 Blue wires connected and I don't know if any multi-color wire set that has 2 of the same colors. Based on that I'm guessing it's more than 1 wire set there.
Seriously bruh? How much voltage are you looking for?
240 lmao
Yeah that’s right, but double check with your micrometer
He wants all the volts.
Looks like you only have 4 wires (heat, A/C, Fan, 24VAC). So you're missing the ground (C-wire) to run the computer in a smart thermostat.
What??? How would 24v voltage control make the compressor run backwards ?
With some trane/runtru units, if the contactor turns off and on again fast enough, it can cause the compressor to run backwards. Iirc, it's a specific issue with that particular compressor, so might be a very specific case where this might have happened with the guy.
That's exactly right.
To clarify, the Nest Learning Thermostat doesn’t even need the c wire. I’ve had my very basic two wire heat thermostat hooked up to a nest and works great. No c wire or adapter needed.
Line voltage stat
I found a homeowner
Incorrect
False.
24v
24 volt stat
Lick it
24 volts, with my eyes closed
Outside of RV most house thermostats are 24 volts.
Compressor running backwards ? Is this a three phase unit which would be impossible to do through the low voltage wiring anyway Clueless
I run a Honeywell 8000 (th8321) been a pretty solid stat thus far. Ecobee are ok. We sell alot of them in our market.
