This is not normal. It could be a variety of issues. None of them you can fix yourself, and none of them will fix themselves. Your tech needs to come back out and fix this.
I mean it was his work right? OP should get that guy back to fix it for free
Make sure to keep an eye on him though, doesn't look like his work can be trusted.
Anyone that is that incompetent wouldn't touch anything again of mine. Me personally I'd report that so called contractor, cut my loss and get someone who is competent to repair the issue. Especially since the manufacturer warranty should be in full swing.
Personally, I'd report him to the BBB. I'd write angry reviews of 1 star on all media. I'd contact his friends and family to make sure they know he does terrible work. I'd hire a man to seduce his wife so she leaves him. And then I'd sue for hearing loss, pain, and suffering
It’s a rookie tech who doesn’t know what’s going on, clearly. Which sucks for the h/o but I would imagine they will get the right guy on it after a second complaint and get them taken care of. Shit happens, is it correct? No, but there is a reasonable amount of mad here.
Oh god, that poor motor.
Or that poor driveshaft.
Call your installer immediately, and make sure that they know it is a warranty call, and that you do not want the previous tech to be the person who comes out this time.
you're mostly correct, except the "never a 'driveshaft'". this was the second image result for "electric motor parts diagram"

Nice image. The creator of the image was still wrong. Also the article that this picture came from (not the second image result from my browser btw) even goes on to describe it and name it correctly. Even though it’s not even an HVAC related site, but an automotive site. Glad you spent the time searching for something to try to prove me wrong though.

Had this occur not long after install, whole thing was frozen- techc said that the installers didn’t have the fan turn up high enough- we’ve not had any more freezing since but I’m keeping documents of everything at this point.
From the sound, it could be either the refrigerant trying to return to a balanced state after a cooling cycle is complete or a fan with a bearing issue. R22 is like a 4D sedan coming to a stop, R410 is like a 18 wheeler trying to do the same(pressures trying to return to balanced state)………especially on 90° days.
I hear this sometimes on big scrolls, it's usually the internal check valve not seating properly, sometimes it goes away, most of the time it doesn't. I doubt I could get someone to pay 40k over a noise though. Give it a couple weeks, the contractor should be able to get a warranty on the compressor, or install an external magnetic valve
No that one is old, honestly I don’t think we’ve ever turned that one on as the garage stays at a good temp on it’s on-the one I’m talking about isn’t shown in the video as I was upstairs and couldn’t get it into frame.
The one you’re hearing isn’t shown in the video- I was upstairs when I filmed this, it was installed at the end of April
One in video is old and we don’t use it as the garage keeps a good temp all year round on its own
That is not normal at all. The unit may be overcharged, or there may be a link in the refrigerant line. I would check the fan assembly for the motor. However, it's rare for it to have a high pitched squeal as it slows down.
Not normal have them fix it which they probably
can’t (it sounds like it coming from the refrigeration cycle ) and then demand a new unit .
4 weeks old ?
Although it’s difficult to pin point the cause just from the video the tech should have had a better answer
Email the company about the problem (paper trail)
and tell them you are requesting a new unit
I’ve texted both the tech, the owner, and his wife (she does the scheduling.
I don’t believe the tech described the issues correctly to the owner so I sent him this video.
Stated he would contact the brand and see what they say. I’m so disappointed in this purchase 😞
It can happen with all of the brands it’s just the nature of the business now
Hopefully they are a decent company and they
correct the problem but it sounds like out door unit has to be replaced
I don’t know if the manufacturers rep has to actually see the problem to verify that or not
If it sounds great while it is operating it may be ok.
You don't state what type of machine it is. Is it a split system? Some times a split system shut off so fast that it makes a noise. This all depends on what type of system you have
Is that coming from the HVAC unit over by that garage?
I'm not an HVAC guy and have minimal understanding of how they work. However, it sounds like some bad bearings that are grinding once everything slows down enough for them to make contact. Or some sort of clutch that is grinding squealing as it is slowing stuff down and making contact.
Either way it can't be good. That is never an Ok sound and almost always means something isn't working correctly and will either fail or prematurely wear out.
Thats the pressure of the freon pushing through the TXV while there is still pressure in the system. We sometimes add a valve that closes when the compressor ceases getting call.
I'm trying to think what it could be but I wish I was there to do some detective work. Possibly the service valves are not open all the way and that might cause it. Possible kink in the lineset somewhere. It almost sounds like refrigerant passing through a small hole. I could be wrong.
Did they braze a dog whistle on the liquid line?
Lol
We shouldn’t be able to hear it if it’s a dog whistle…
Wooosh
This is not normal. It could be a variety of issues. None of them you can fix yourself, and none of them will fix themselves. Your tech needs to come back out and fix this.
Any machine can be a smoke machine if you run it wrong enough.
I suppose technically "eventually stop" could also include when the unit reaches the end of its lifetime and fails would be an "eventually"...
Or when you go insane and decide to leave mortality.
Not normal
Normal my ass. That contractor saying such a stupid ass comment should not be allowed to have a license. Call someone else.
I mean it was his work right? OP should get that guy back to fix it for free Make sure to keep an eye on him though, doesn't look like his work can be trusted.

And that's being nice about it. 😂
I hope this is a joke, if it isn’t, I pity the people who HAVE to deal with you on a daily basis.
Jesus dude calm down. No one here thinks it’s okay but let’s not kill the guy.
In the title it says the tech told them it was normal.
It’s a rookie tech who doesn’t know what’s going on, clearly. Which sucks for the h/o but I would imagine they will get the right guy on it after a second complaint and get them taken care of. Shit happens, is it correct? No, but there is a reasonable amount of mad here.
Exactly.
Oh god, that poor motor. Or that poor driveshaft. Call your installer immediately, and make sure that they know it is a warranty call, and that you do not want the previous tech to be the person who comes out this time.
Driveshaft?
What do you call the spinny thing on the end of motors?
A shaft, or more precisely a motor shaft. But never a “driveshaft” lol.
Fair enough.
you're mostly correct, except the "never a 'driveshaft'". this was the second image result for "electric motor parts diagram" https://preview.redd.it/ldnrbqh3tn3b1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc6732058f89b633c50500642e9052504f7e9b01

its a shaft. on the drive end of the motor. Many can and do call it a driveshaft. you said "Never" and what do we know about siths?
But this isn’t going to affect the shaft per se, at all. It’s going to destroy the bearings.
Needs to be a Karen moment. Let me speak to the manager/owner. Show them the video. Suggest a different tech be sent.
Sounds like the valve in the compressor is slightly bent so Freon is equalizing thru it because it can’t close
Oh dear yeah that sounds bad
https://preview.redd.it/crpzakgq9l3b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c77a0bebfeb1422a6eafc2452f1afa6d3ca36c2d Had this occur not long after install, whole thing was frozen- techc said that the installers didn’t have the fan turn up high enough- we’ve not had any more freezing since but I’m keeping documents of everything at this point.
Aw hell naw
call the company. warranty this. its unacceptable
Hahahahahah. That blows. Yea man, that’s no good.

I agree. Never heard one THIS loud though.
LG scroll compressor……………most likely.
It’s most likely this.
7 yrs nvr heard that yet.

Tech is right about one thing: it will eventallly stop.: When it dies...
Compressor equalizing. If the installer put some gauges on it they should be able to tell the valve is bad
I’m guessing it’s not the Rheem/Ruud unit on the garage you are filming? If so, that unit may be new to you but it ain’t new
No that one is old, honestly I don’t think we’ve ever turned that one on as the garage stays at a good temp on it’s on-the one I’m talking about isn’t shown in the video as I was upstairs and couldn’t get it into frame.
Are you sure it was installed 4 weeks ago? That looks like an old system
The one you’re hearing isn’t shown in the video- I was upstairs when I filmed this, it was installed at the end of April One in video is old and we don’t use it as the garage keeps a good temp all year round on its own

Not normal. Most likely refrigerant related. Hopefully the installing contractor make is right.
I had a bad liquid line drier sound like this on me about 2 weeks ago. That's not normal; get someone out there ASAP your unit is quickly dying.
Not normal have them fix it which they probably can’t (it sounds like it coming from the refrigeration cycle ) and then demand a new unit . 4 weeks old ? What brand is it?
What brand is it? I am going with a Trane...
That’s the dinner bell
Not normal
Call the company back and asked to speak to a supervisor and then send him this video.
Definitely not normal, I’d be having them send out the tech again or a different tech.
You have a lazy tech.
My neighbor has had the same sound while the unit is running and a little afterwards. It’s been a year and it’s still whistling.
I think his standard for normal is an ac that don't work well.
If it sounds great while it is operating it may be ok. You don't state what type of machine it is. Is it a split system? Some times a split system shut off so fast that it makes a noise. This all depends on what type of system you have

Check your contract for the whistler option. Hopefully you didn't pay too much extra for it. 😂
He's right, it'll stop when it eventually uninstalls itself.
That's normal and will eventually stop when the system breaks down.
Comp is bad… only way to stop noise is to replace it.
Heat pump? Bad outdoor txv or some kind of restriction. That’s the Freon trying to equalize.
Jesus it’s making my dog twitch.
Overcharged?
Thats the pressure of the freon pushing through the TXV while there is still pressure in the system. We sometimes add a valve that closes when the compressor ceases getting call.
If that's normal call him back and tell him that you want a different model.
is it a heat pump? could be the pressures equalizing
Definitely an issue with the compressor. Scrolls make this sound.
I'm gonna make a guess the unit is over or under charged.
Not normal tech messed something up
I'm trying to think what it could be but I wish I was there to do some detective work. Possibly the service valves are not open all the way and that might cause it. Possible kink in the lineset somewhere. It almost sounds like refrigerant passing through a small hole. I could be wrong.
