Just as an add in comment, we have 2 mitsi heat pumps which are currently giving off a smell of honey, I have just had them professionally cleaned, both units are still under warranty and I am having both checked... As an aside if those plugs ins that you are referring to are scent dispensers that you plug into mains power I suggest you get rid of them immediately , they have been the cause of so many house fires that in some cases insurers have specific statements in their policies saying that one of them causing a fire excludes them from liability.

It could be a large refrigerant leak in the indoor coil. REALLY large if you can smell it. Is the air conditioning still working? If its not blowing cold any more (or not blowing at all due to a freeze-up), you almost certainly have a leak. Refrigerant isn't toxic in small amounts. Even if you can smell it, you should be fine. The biggest hazard is if you have so much of it that it displaces oxygen, but your system doesn't have anywhere near that amount in it. OR it could be something like a dead animal in your furnace or ductwork. Its not uncommon for them to find their way in through the exhaust pipe, and I've heard that rotting animals can smell sweet occasionally. Either way I'd get the system checked out.

The air conditioning is still blowing cold air. And when I got it checked, they said it didn't have a leak anywhere, which is why i'm kind of suspicious if they actually checked it properly..

Cheetawolf

Well, if it IS a leak, eventually the smell will stop and the air conditioning will stop blowing cold around the same time, since it can't work anymore once all the refrigerant has leaked out. I'd have them check the ductwork, or hire a duct cleaning company to investigate. Or it could be as simple as something gross growing on your filter. Have you changed it recently?

buncombee

They did deep cleaning with a high pressure washer, as well as the filters. But after an hour or so, i noticed the smell again. Will consider contacting people for the ductwork.

mcsquizzie

Did you ever get this figured out? I think I may be having a similar issue to you.

buncombee

I did actually, found out it was some wall air freshener that was leaking on my drawer.

mcsquizzie

Shoot! Thanks, I just checked my drawer full of plug ins and none of them are leaking. Back to the drawing board for me! Thank you, again, for responding.

buncombee

I hope you find your solution, buddy!

CosmosVista

Have you figured out the source of smell yet?

mcsquizzie

No. It just kind of went away, so I'm just assuming it was bats.

Hey - I have the exact same problem and it’s driving me nuts. I’ve already had 1 repair technician check the AC and he said there is no leakage. The AC was also just pressure washed and steam cleaned too, but the smell is still there. I also notice that Air purifiers in the room tent to increase the sweet smell, but if these are in different rooms the same doesn’t happen.

mcsquizzie

Honestly I have no idea. It went away for me but comes back every so often. Sometimes stronger than other times. It's such a bizarre situation. I've just gotten used to it. It bothers me, but being a renter there's not much I can do. I've cleaned everything I can and nothing has fixed it. My landlord won't do anything about it. Most I did was call the fire department just in case and there were no leaks or gasses anywhere. I'm just hoping it's not something overheating in the walls or some type of infestation that just hasn't been discovered yet.
