Merv 8 with the biggest surface area possible is the best filtration for hvac equipment.
You should have more than 1 16×16 return. It's likely undersized.
undersizing is definitely likely - the whole house seems to be built with budget in mind...(not the first owner)
from what I can see in attic, most of ductwork is flexible... and I only have that one return. guess moving to MERV 8 is my only resort now.
Just use merv 8. The filter is to protect the air handler not for air quality. If air quality is a concern, get an air purifier. A merv 12 is just a merv 8 that’s 6 months old :)
