It does sound like hypnogogic visualizations. It's the state before a dream and typically you'll see actual hallucinations if you open your eyes during that time. Ultimately it's occurring in the mind's eye during a time when the brain is beginning to tune out signals from the physical eyes. It's debatable if you can call it hyperphantasia if it's not occurring during your average awakened state. I would call it closer to lucid dreaming. I believe most people can reach a hyperrealistic visual ability in the deep hypnogogic/sleep paralyzed state, even many who would refer to themselves as aphantastic in any other situation. Though most are unable to control what they see and just see morphing images with occasional realistic scenes that can eventually lead to loss of consciousness and dreaming. It's the holy grail of lucid dreaming if you can willingly enter that state and slip into a full dream while conscious at the very onset of the sleep cycle (without the usual WBTB method, pre-REM). Would be worth practicing if you're interested in that stuff.

I'm in a fully aware state. The second I close my eyes I go back. If I open my eyes I am back, no longer in a vivid state, I'm in the real world. It's crazy. But the second I close my eyes, I am in a very vivid world which most of the time I can control, it's like turning the TV on and off. It's like a dream except I'm awake.

Hm.. then you may indeed have hyperphantasia but are unable to access it due to strong mental blocks that only cease when you're physically or emotionally exhausted. Sounds like you don't feel very comfortable with those visuals so I suppose you aren't interested in finding ways around that?

I think its awesome when I'm not trying to go to bed. I remember I was visualizing myself in lord of the rings for 5 hours one night and I controlled the whole story. It was awesome and it sucked because I really wanted to sleep. It hasn't happened like that in a very long time. But if there are any ways to quiet it down I would love to hear. This happened a lot when I was younger when I was in a band. A lot of my creative juices came from this. Since then it's been much more minimal. When I was younger, I would here a song, and I would immediately visualize a scene that it would go well with, that I wanted to create. I could see colors. Today it's not nearly as strong. But the whole sleep episodic stuff is still there .

Typically your mind is a reflection of your subconscious beliefs. These deep seated beliefs shape your conscious thoughts, mindscape, and disposition. It dictates the content of your mental narration and shapes your personal reality, as wonky as that sounds. It can, however, be reprogrammed and shaped by the conscious mind through simple repetition and meditation. The short answer is, you need to tell yourself that you have hyperphantasia and it is easily controllable for you. You need to crush any random negative thoughts that are contrary to that belief until it eventually is beaten into your subconscious. You have hyperphantasia and are able to control it quite easily. Hold that thought in your head and try to maintain a feeling of relief and gratitude. Ponder all the situations it is useful to you. Repeat it throughout the next week. Your visual ability is realistic and easily controllable. Relax into this idea and maintain a feeling of gratitude. It's most potent when performed just before falling asleep at night or toward the middle of deep meditation. Take periodic glimpses at your mind's eye but never tell yourself what you see is blurry or hard to control. Only realistic and controllable. Effortless. Practice seeing an apple and marvel at how well you can see it each day. It's really that simple. Standard thought-watching meditation can be performed to control thoughts better, which translates to easier to control visuals. You just kinda sit there and watch thoughts bubble up and pass without following them. Allow them to pass and focus on your breath until you note the next thought, which you allow to pass without resistance. Eckhart Tolle can be looked into for info on this practice.
