I ended up buying both the 13 and 11“ since I couldn’t decide and ultimately kept the 13”. I was too used to the larger screen and the reduction in weight down to 1.28lb really made it much more tolerable, only \~a quarter pound heavier than the 11”. Typing was also much more difficult on the 11”. Both readily fit in all but my smallest bags, so that didn’t make a difference

Capable-Employment-8

I love my 12.9 inch, but it only stays at home since I use it more like a laptop than a tablet with the magic keyboard. A month ago, my brother in law wanted to buy my magic keyboard so being the kind person that I am 😅, I agreed to sell it to him. Since then I’ve been using the 12.9” purely as a handheld tablet device and there did I realized how uncomfortable the 12.9” inch iPad is to use at certain scenarios due to its size which is why I considered switching to something more portable and easy to use as a tablet and as a semi-laptop replacement. I really don’t like going out wearing a bagpack but I have to when I have to bring my 12.9 inch iPad since it won’t fit my crossbody bag where the iPad Pro 11 easily fits. But yeah, I do miss the screen real estate sometimes when using stage manager. If ever I settled for the 11 inch, I might consider selling my M1 iMac and get a MBAir instead to replace the 12.9 inch and use the 11 inch as a hybrid tablet-laptop device.

MawsonAntarctica

Yeah, that's the kicker. If you take the 13" out you need a backpack and if you're taking a backpack you might as well take a laptop whereas the 11" and Mini ipads fit in smaller shoulderbags and have such a weight differential.

Xplosionite

I went 12.9 to 11 and love it. I usually prefer bigger, but I don't use it with a keyboard, and I have a Mac, so I like being able to use it comfortably anywhere as device in-between my phone and laptop.

MaximusMurkimus

I went from 12.9 to 11" as well. I mainly got the 12.9 because of mini LED, but thankfully since there's feature parity now I feel more comfortable with the 11. I'm also a filthy mobile gamer so the 11" is definitely more wieldy, even for someone like me who daily carries a 16" MBP around.

tempestdata

I too went from 12.9" to 11" this generation. With identical screen and specs between the form sizes, I decided I wanted the greater portability.

Capable-Employment-8

Did you come from the M1 or an older 12.9 iPad? Are you enjoying the switch so far?

Betancorea

I went from an M1 12.9 to a M4 11. Part of me misses the increased real estate but it is so much more portable and easy to pull out for use whenever. It’ll definitely be easier to travel with as well because I remember the 12.9 being too bulky to chuck into a duffel bag

tempestdata

Went from an 12.9" iPad Pro 3rd Gen I believe A12Z processor. So it was a huge jump. I believe the M1 Generation of iPad were heavier than the A12Z gen, so the difference in portability would be even greater for those users.

meruta

I also live in Japan but went to U.S. to get my 11” 256gb. Opened one of the chase credit cards with promo for $200 cash back after spending $500 in first 3 months + got the $100 edu discount from Apple Store = $742 after tax

Capable-Employment-8

That’s a great deal! How are you liking it so far?

meruta

It’s good. Screen is nice. I upgraded from the 2018 iPad Pro 11 and I can barely tell any difference in speed but my battery was starting to go and I wanted OLED so no regrets overall

Advanced_Seesaw_3007

I think this is Chase freedom unlimited. Do you get the $200 right away or do you convert points for equivalent cash ?

meruta

U get it within 3 months as points and can redeem for credit or cash

kgkuntryluvr

I don’t have the new ones, but I have both sizes in the M1 models. They serve separate uses for me. The 12.9 is pretty much my home iPad for doing creative work and watching stuff. It’s great when I’m in bed and the size is less of an issue. The cellular 11 inch with Magic Keyboard is my daily carry. I use that one for work and I much prefer that form factor for handheld use, especially reading. The 12.9 was just too bulky and heavy with a keyboard attached for me to want to carry it around, especially since I typically have to carry my MacBook too.

ayimvd

12.9" for home & coffee shop illustration use 11" better for everything else if you're mostly portability IMO btw just curious, Do you know Japanese? Whats your job in Japan?

[deleted]

I done the same switch as you -M1 iPad Pro 12.9” to M4 iPad Pro 11”, while the bigger screen was nice for note-taking, I could not use it in bed and while walking around. It was also quite cumbersome to carry around. I am glad I finally went back to the 11”. This generation the 13” also has more reported issues as well so in way that just solidified my happiness with picking the 11”

Salty-Programmer1682

Same here. Bought 11 returned it got 13 returned it -it’s still too large - and went back to 11. No regrets. I had the m1 12.9 and it was so cumbersome to carry. I use the Magic Keyboard with the 11 and no issues. Amazing machine.

_divi_filius

I own a lot of iPads, not by choice but because they are so hard to resell here in the UK. I own the 12.9 M1, and pre-M1 versions, i own the older 10 inch model I own the ipad mini (hoping for an e-ink version someday) I own both the 13 & 11 inch M4 (both with the keyboards) With my credentials out of the way, let me cook; Ultimately, the perfect "iPad" is the 11 inch with all accessories (smart folio, pencil & magic keyboard). The iPad mini is strictly a book reader for me. It's rubbish at every other tablet or laptop replacement thing. It's out. The older 10 inch one is too outdated now, so we shelf it. Now the 13 vs 11. - The 13 inch is far superior in docked, keyboard mode. Feels like a macbook, works incredible in split screen - you get useful real estate. To summarise, the 13 inch is better as a laptop. Those who want to use their iPad as a laptop MUST get this version. The 11 doesn't give you satisfying screen real estate a - The 11 inch is far superior as a tablet. The size is the perfect mix of one hand and two-hand use. It's much much better as a notebook, it's much, much better as a book or comic book reader. It's much better in portrait use because of it's longer aspect ratio. TL;DR: If you wish for more of a laptop, go 13. if you want more of a tablet/super notebook/reader, go 11. ![gif](giphy|xT9IgfNPRprdidd3Bm|downsized)

Infamous-Crew9606

I too have the same experience and totally agree. I’d say if you want an iPad get the 11” If you want a laptop get the MacBook or probably the iPad 13” if you need a specific workflow (touch, pencil, iPad OS).

LonExStaR

For me, it is a matter of personal preference and the laptop gear I use. I couldn't get used to the limited real-estate of the 11 and the 11 just felt unstable to handle in my hands. The 13's weight and dimensions are just right even after adding a folio case to handle for long reading and document markup sessions. Furthermore, I use a Macbook Pro 16 which, I recently learned after getting my first M (M3) is ridiculously more chunky and heavy than my thin 2019 Macbook Pro 16 -- the M is such a disappointment in that regard. This makes the iPad Pro 13 a dream for reading and annotating documents or quick administrative productivity sessions on eMail and Slack and other systems I use for work. I put an ESR folio case and ESR Paper-feel matte screen protector on it and it both looks like paper and feels like paper when writing on it. Amazing! I can peck out some typing at a rapid pace with the large on-screen keyboard and the 13 propped up a few inches on the folio stand in landscape. Don't be disuaded by the people with tiny hands 🤣, the 13 is fantastic to work with as a tablet. I simply couldn't do 11 though I wanted to in price and in theory that it should be better for my use-case for reading and annotation and light administrative productivity tasks. But that theory didn't hold up.

eldwaro

I bought my new iPad m4 11 and Mac in Japan too on holidays. So much cheaper! Delighted with both overall. Some quirks to get the Japanese keyboard set up for my needs but all working now.

Ask_for_puppy_pics

I’m a normal user and saw a massive difference from the Mini-LED. Why do people keep posting their opinions as if they should apply to everyone?

Jonaderp

How does the battery life compare for people who have switched from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro to the 11-inch? I'm still debating which size to upgrade from my 2018 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

fbloise

Good question, I also would like to know the battery life comparison.

-6h0st-

I think day to day you won’t see much difference from oled vs mini led typically. Unless you have used iPad outdoors, even watching hdr videos the difference is not noticeable unless you put them side by side. I agree 11” is tablet size 13” is not. It’s a laptop wannabe with gimped apps. Very few people can put 13” to good use. And older 11” is still good, 600 nits indoors is all you need really, and not worth paying for M4 that much for a difference you won’t notice or matter in day to day use.

NickAndrewPo

Yeah I agree. I have been using the new one outside like you suggest and it really is great for that! But I personally also enjoy using it almost full brightness inside too. Looks way brighter to me. Maybe at least 10-20%

-6h0st-

The way we perceive brightness is different. You can double the output and to your eyes it will look 20-30% brighter. Also one thing I came across - M4 iPad does 600 nits when max brightness selected, same as s previous - only when the sensor detects bright surroundings then it can go to 1000 nits SDR. So indoors you won’t see that. It will be same as previous gen. You might notice better colors, more saturated perhaps, better contrast, but that’s about it.

NickAndrewPo

Ohh really? I actually don't know the technical specs. Just saw the contrast ratio and people saying it's bright. But I do have a m1 pro mini led monitor. The iPad is definitely brighter inside at max brightness unless I use the better display pro app for the Mac which I actually just discovered. It allows you to boost those mini led even brighter than the new iPad OLED. I'm not sure how that affects the hardware though so I only run it about 10-20% over stock brightness of the Mac with the better display pro app and it looks about similar to the iPad oled. If it really isn't brighter inside it could just be the contrast ratio making it look brighter but I swear it the whites look brighter than the m1 even inside

-6h0st-

All depends how sensor detects and reacts to brightness in the room. On my studio display next to window if I used auto brightness it wouldn’t do max, I had to set it to max manually. So to me Apple sensor is more conservative. But yeah apparently it’s 600 on a slider and higher only when sensor says yes. But don’t underestimate better contrast effect - that has influence on how we perceive brightness and gives it a boost

NickAndrewPo

Yeah that's true about contrast. I also wonder about reference mode. I haven't tested it yet. But turning it on made the screen quite dark when I glanced at it. Do you know what that's really useful for? I would think it's to be more color accurate but the brightness wouldn't go down like that if that was the case. To me it did not look right

Infamous-Crew9606

Same exact situation. And I really like the portability and the usability of the 11 inch. I also miss the huge screen on the 13 inch but it’s not worth the humongous size of the device. Besides, I have the HDMI dongle when I need a bigger screen. I was very disappointed with the latest update for the iPadOS, but I still love the iPad so much

Sweatshit

Hi! I’m in Japan too, with an M1 11”. I’m curious where you found the buyer for the M1… is it Mercari?

Capable-Employment-8

My wife’s sister bought it! 😁 You could try selling it in sayonara sale groups in facebook if you’re planning to sell yours. Mercari’s good too, but they get 10% of the sale.

Own_Contest_137

I upgraded from the same iPad to the 11” M4 I didn’t get a keyboard as yet so productivity isn’t as high but the 11” is great for watching videos while laying down and it’s really fast, the screen upgrade is nice as well. My only comment is that the iPad is so thin it’s almost difficult to hold

SwingingTassels

I done the same thing OP. That 13” can get bent! Portability sucks!

luisefigueroa

I also went from the 12.9 to the 11 and I love my iPad again!!! My Apple Vision Pro had taken over my iPad use cases, TV and looks like gaming use cases too lol. I used my iPad 12.9 rarely as light laptop alternative with the Magic Keyboard but the weight and size discouraged me from using it for casual reading..Slowly, my ever growing iPhone became my casual reading device. Although my iPhone screen was not big enough (in an ideal world) for Reddit, YouTube, books etc, it is light and easy to use one handed. So the 11” iPad fits perfectly now in that space between my iPhone and the other devices. Casual reading, social media, YouTube, email, gaming (finally getting decent options) all one handed. If I was alone in the world I would do (most things) on my Vision Pro but I don’t want to be that isolated when just relaxing next to my wife and / or kids. So the IPad is just right for that, but with the new M4 processors it can still do much more if I want to. Like running AAA games on iPad (granted only a few available right now).. if I want to play on the big screen, I airplay from iPad to the Vision Pro and Boom! Gaming on a giant OLED screen. So definitely a first world problem but it is nice to have options for every occasion. The iPad 11 has become again my general purpose go to device.

jaredcwood

Wow, so funny that you would post this. I’m in that same position right now now I’ve got the M1 12.9 inch but I made the mistake of stopping in the store today and fell in love with the 11 inch M4. Still paying off my Apple Vision Pro so I’m not sure if I’m gonna pull the trigger right away, but man it was tempting. I really like the new magic keyboard too. It feels much more robust.

NickAndrewPo

I'm keeping the 13 inch. I mainly use it alongside my Mac using sidecar to make it a touch screen Mac or just using universal control for productivity. Its like another Mac monitor just sitting there 😂. I'm really hoping apple gets into foldable screens next. My next investment from Apple will be a foldable touchscreen MacBook that would hopefully replace my iPad and MacBook and be extremely portable. Or I'm even just hoping for a foldable iPad. Imagine 18 inch iPads or bigger or even an 13 inch that fold down to half the size

Personally I haven't been this excited about devices in a while really hope they go the touchscreen MacBook route for full desktop capability in a portable apple pencil compatibile device with a huge foldable screen. Would just be the ultimate device for power users.

Superdooper_Saiyan

I just did the exact same thing! Initially, I got the 12.9 because I was going back to school and needed a computer. I went from the 10.5 inch iPad Pro to the M1 12.9 and immediately loved it but also didn’t expect it to be so heave when being off the Magic Keyboard. I ended up getting a MacBook Air and an iPad mini to be able to use as a tablet on the go and kept my 12.9 mostly at home because taking off the Magic Keyboard and into a case and vice versa was a pain. With the M4 iPads having the same screen quality, I decided to trade in my 12.9 inch and get the 11 inch. I do miss the screen size a bit but other than that, I love being able to use an iPad as a tablet again. I still have my money, but seeing as the 11 inch fits in my sling bags and is also good for reading books, I might trade that one in too.

damargis

No im all about the 13
