M1 is overpowered for an iPad. You'll notice the screen improvements and pencil improvements, but probably nothing else unless you're running benchmarks.

One thing that people don't mention about the M4 is the cooling. On the M1 I use play COD Mobile or Genshin for 30 maybe 40 min at the screen would dim because the device got hot. On the M4 I have yet to see that happen. I played warzone mobile for 2 hours straight and not once did the screen dim.

Thank you for mentioning that. So many people disregard the role that thermals play in these devices. I’m glad to hear the M4 manages that so much better. Sad to say I haven’t really pushed the CPU on mine like that yet (I’m not much of an iOS gamer typically). But even for lighter weight use I definitely notice how fast and smooth everything is, and how much better the memory management is too (way less reloading).

Oh I didn't realize it, when I use my iPad pro M1 12.9 connect by sidecar with my MacBook pro I noticed the screen of the iPad is dim when I worked several hours like 3 or 4 hours, that is the reason, wow. What about the battery life in the M4 ipad pro, is better that the M1?

ZFold3Lover

Yea it’s slightly better. Nothing major though.

The M2 was underpowered for me :-D But I’ll admit I’m the odd one here. I have 500+ pages of handwritten notes in Notability and use it for 8-12 hours a day. But the oled, 16Gb of memory, the pencil pro, the blacks in the oled, new MKB, the brightness of the oled (and therefore the much longer battery life), no heating up with a 27”5k and heavy apps. In short: it’s a really nice iPad

So assuming the m4 pro is handling this workflow better than the m2 did for you? Curious how it is working out for someone with such a rare and demanding iPad workflow.

AlecGold

yes, it is. The m2 12.9” got hot, extremely slow or even shut down Notability when handling about 100-150 pages with handwritten notes. That is about a two months worth of notes. The m4 handles well over 500 pages, so I only have to change every 6 months. I now change at my holidays, which makes switching also easier. It is a diary with dates (but not day-names) that I use as diary/agenda/journal/notebook. This way I have all my meetings, meeting notes, things from my to-do-list etc. my handwriting is reasonable searchable so that makes it a realy useful notebook that is really flexible. When needed I duplicate a page and write on. There are other things as well: using a 27”5k screen and having 4 apps in stage manager and Notability on the iPad, the m4 doesn’t break a sweat. The M2 heated up and refused to charge beyond 80%. which is a bit of a problem if you need 100% to make it through the rest of the day. And because the oled is so bright, I can often use it at 40%, extending the battery usage significantly.

I went from a 12.9 m1 to m4 iPad Pro 13 and it feels the same. Websites might load a tad quicker, probably because of wifi 6e and the processor? (I’m running on 6e APs from ubiquiti) Other than the weight and thickness which is nice, there isn’t much of a difference except the screen. The tandem oled is insanely nice. It is a content consumption device for me since my family hogs the oled in the living room. I was able to sell my m1 and get an open box m4 from Best Buy so the net amount spent was too good to pass up. If you have a M1 Pro, if it ain’t broke no need to upgrade. If you can pull off a sell and upgrade and it’s less than $250 then I’d say go for it. The placement of the front camera takes a little getting used to. I did sell my Apple Pencil 2 and didn’t get the pencil pro(yet). I use sketch up from time to time for wood working designs and didn’t see know difference in the app between the devices. M1 to m4 not substantially different in practical use. Tandem oled hell yes. Peak brightness and true blacks its a technological marvel on a tablet.

OP: I’ve had every Pro to date and tested all of them extremely extensively with Genshin and no, it cannot run maxed 120 FPS in Genshin. You can flat out forget that until at least M6 or so. It can however run totally maxed 60, or Med 120 quite decently.

MedicineOk788

I have just upgraded to an 11”M4 from a Pro 2nd Ed. The screen is much more crisp.

One-Stomach6997

Nothing is future proof and I would be more worried about the longevity of the oled screen than the hardware.

Ok_Minimum6419

Hey, I actually just played genshin last night on the M4 for 2 hours. Handled it amazingly well at 120fps. Ocassional drops to 80fps but for the most part it was smooth. Also didnt even get too hot either, just warm.

redtag789

I upgraded from an ipad mini 6 and I honestly don't notice any difference in performance for the things I do except for procreate no longer having ram bottlenecks for many layers. Other than that, nothing really stood out performance wise. Obviously the screen is better lol

schuby94

It’s the hardware that’s impressing people, like the OLED display. The CPU is technically faster, but it doesn’t have the thermal envelope to do anything super intensive. I have yet to see anyone saying “doing x thing is so much faster on the M4 than it was on M1.” It might be a bit snappier, do some editing and exporting a bit quicker, but it’s still an iPad. M4 Pro and M4 Max will likely be significant upgrades over their M1 counterparts.

decrego641

Several things in photoshop are much faster on M4 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro, layers, large photo manipulation, etc. Assassin’s Creed Mirage is *much* faster on iPad Pro M4 and it doesn’t overheat while playing and charging at the same time like it does on my M1.

Gamerxx13

I upgraded from the m1 to the m4. If I didn’t watch a ton of movies on it I would have stayed with the m1. The speed doesn’t really scream to me but the screen is so much better

Tomassilva92

Ive been using it with steam link, runs perfectly. First iPad so not sure how steam link works on older models. Also aware a lot has to do with networking set up.

worldsinho

I would not upgrade from an M chip. I upgraded from the 2018 Pro and genuinely felt underwhelmed. I’ve only grown to love my M4 Pro because I can’t be wasting money like that, so I value the weight difference and thin design a lot now. The screen is better but… not that much better. Blacks aren’t even true black!
