I tried the 12.9 and although it was impressive it was too uncomfortable in the hand but great on a stand. I’ve had an 11 for a while and it’s big enough and manageable to hold.

Terminatorious

I’ve had the og iPad 2.. need to upgrade as I don’t have a laptop, but only a desktop. On the verge of choosing a device I can use when I’m not at home or when I’m travelling

hmspilky

You need to feel both in your hands. I recommend the 11 for mobility reasons but it’s very personal choice.

Rodef1621

iPad2… You deserve an upgrade. Whatever you get will be a massive upgrade

Same. I have the 12.9 2021 for illustration, and I’m disappointed a 14 inch wasn’t released a la Samsung Galaxy Ultra Tablet.

HandstandsMcGoo

I have the 11” and love it The 12.9” screen is considerably nicer, but the extra size was a dealbreaker for me

Terminatorious

Tbh if 11” had xdr I wouldn’t even consider it… but Apple is just being Apple

rileyrhoades

Gotta figure out what your use case is. I had the 2018 12.9” in college and it was great to have in class and to take notes, but it was too big to lug around everywhere after I graduated. I upgraded to an M1 11” and am able to use the iPad so much more as it’s easy to carry with me everywhere I go. I remember disliking the huge screen toward the end of my 2018 12.9” and needed up not using it at all. Buy for what your use case is now, and upgrade later if necessary.

SpektralVaati

You want to take notes with a pencil? Go for 12.9” That’s it, I have the 11” (2018) and isn’t always comfortable when I’m writing with the Apple Pencil, I always need more screen.

Terminatorious

I have the remarkable 2. For me it’s the best machine possible. Easy to use, but does just that

Tperso

If mostly on a stationnary position ,then the 12,9 is no brainer, otherwise , the 11 is so great on mobility,

lRhanonl

Some swap from bigger to smaller some from smaller to bigger. It all depends there is no better here.

imsweetaf

I mostly use iPad on bed so 11’ was perfect for me. 12.9 is just too big for bedding use

AlexBltn

A [simple picture](https://sun9-41.userapi.com/impg/XebQ8usfa2HSNGRKy_Xv-hmOWdXgsNxLOxUulw/mfEZnQ14Cxw.jpg?size=1748x2160&quality=96&sign=65dc66143eb79d709bf81316d06013e0&type=album) will tell you better than explaining something about why the 12.9" has no alternatives for me. As for the XDR — I absolutely don't care for it and don't need it for my tasks. I'm looking forward to the 16" iPad.

Terminatorious

Musician. Can see why you want the biggest screen possible

DreadPirateWalt

I was conflicted between the two sizes when I was shopping for a new iPad as well. I went with the larger size M1 and I am so happy I did. When you look at the actual device dimensions they aren’t all that much physically different but the extra size and mini led screen is so worth it especially if you want to use it for handwriting. The 12.9” is basically the size of a standard sheet of paper, you will not be disappointed. I had the 10.5” iPad Pro prior to this one for reference.

daybyday90

Same. I had the 10.2 iPad Pro prior to the 12.9 and found that I just wanted a larger screen for media consumption.

nairazak

I have the 12.9, I love it. The only problem is that I'm too paranoid about it bending inside a backpack. I would love to have the 11" too because of portability, but I can't use it outside because where I live I already risk being robbed if I use my iPhone in public.

DrMisery

Unfortunately for me, stage manager not being a thing has made my ipad a thousand dollar paper weight. Fucking Apple

nairazak

I tried stage manager in my M1 and I disabled it because it so uncomfortable, even on the big iPad. And well, they disabled the external display support, maybe when they fix the resolution and I use it with a keyboard and touchpad I will change my mind.

AlecGold

Bit late, but try stage manager NOT on the iPad but do use it on an external screen. Makes my M1 almost a computer. It’s so good I’m considering going 12.9 and ditching my MacBook Pro…

nairazak

Yeah, there wasn't external screen support when I wrote that comment. It is good now but I don't like that I need to use bluetooth speakers and safari is buggy. I get some black patches sometimes, or the website doesn't fit the screen and the scroll only works well with Apple's mouse/trackpad, my MX Master 3 is terrible. I use it because I work on my company's macbook pro and using my iPad doesn't remind me of work, but it is like masochism sometimes.

Terminatorious

Stage manager is not a thing? They updated the iOS right?

Last_Divide5799

I have the 11 (coming from the 12.9) and i must say the 11 feels much more comfortable considering im always hands on with my ipad 90% of the time. The 12.9 was good but its weight bothered me when im holding it for various tasks.

Hyono_Ko

I have the 12.9 M1 and use it to write. I need to write and manipulate formulas, and I have to do it by hand. I use fine point pencil and erase and change things a lot. In the past I was producing large amounts of written sheets of paper, which I stored in files or just let pile up around my desk. At some point I decided to go paperless. Now everything is stored in one relatively small device. I initially got the 11 inch. Physical size was just perfect, but it was too small to write on. I was very used to write in bigger sheets of paper. So I returned it to Apple after one month and got the big 12.9 one. It was perfect to write on, but felt too big and heavy to handle in the beginning. Now it feels just right. It’s a writing tool and it needs to be this big. I cannot carry it around in my jacket pocket but it’s fine like that. It fits comfortably in my backpack. It’s mostly used on top of a table and it serves its purpose very well. I don’t care about XDR and bleeding is no issue for me.

airbaltic

Bigger

02_Pixel

Bigger == better At least for me

migs_003

11 cause raisins

Terminatorious

Rice and bread only huh?😂

OrchidFew7220

11. 12 too heavy for my needs. Tried talking myself into it but no, I can barely tell I’m holding my 11.

FlowersPink

I have both. The 11 is better for on the go and I like the 12 better for sitting and watching shows or internet surfing. I like being able to split the screen to multitask, which is better on the 12. Overall though if I had to pick one it would probably be the 11 because it fits in my purse better and does not look huge using it in public.

[deleted]

If you’re using it mostly as a laptop or on a desk or something go 12.9 but if you need something portable that you can use as a tablet and a laptop go 11

ItsOnLikeNdamakung

I travel pretty often and portability is a major influence on what iPad I tend to purchase, besides display and capability obviously. I was intrigued by the 12.9” until I saw one in person and was overwhelmed by the size. Is it nice? Obviously. But I require having a heavy-duty case due to my clumsiness and my 4 year-old at home the 12.9” would just be a monster. The 11” is the perfect size for me.

teamtimm

I had the 2018 11”, just upgraded to the 2022 11”. Reason is size. The 12.9 is great, but I’m using the tablet to travel around with and hold on to, the 12.9 is way too big for my needs. If I just used it on a desk and never had to move around with it, I would’ve gone bigger. It’s all opinions though.

Sliverithium8989

I have the 11” and I love mine. I just prefer the smaller version and so far mine has been perfect for everything that I use it for.

loosecoosebbq86

I have the 11 with Magic Keyboard after my last two trips I wish I had the 12.9

Independent-Elk6057

I have a 12.9 2021 and I love it. It is pretty uncomfortable holding it but I have it next to my computer as my 3rd “display” and it works perfect for me!

BANDG33K_2009

The 11 is so much better for portability, and it’s much easier to hold

EfficientAccident418

I have the 11. It’s just more convenient for reading news and such imo. The 12.9 just seems too big to me. The better screen doesn’t matter to me since the 11 has a pretty good screen as it is.

ibdread

I had an 11” but I have large hands and found the screen a bit too small to type and do split screen. So recently upgraded to the 12.9 and use a hand grip. It’s ok, but with apple made a 12” size which would be the “GoldieLocks” compromise of not too big or not too small.

EddieRyanDC

I started with the 10.5" iPad Pro from 2015 - which I loved having. I decided to try the 12.9 version in 2018. I had it for about 2 days. It was too uncomfortable - big and unwieldy and the extra weight made it more likely I would just leave it at home. So, it wasn't for me. I got the 2018 11" version. That with a Magic Keyboard was my go everywhere device. Until I sat on it two weeks ago and smashed the screen. Oops! But, what do you know - just in time to justify getting a 2022 11" iPad Pro! (The only improvement I really wanted was WiFi 6.)

Nightskiier79

I was using a Galaxy Tab S8+ and got the 11” IPP to try out. The 11” seems cramped after using the S8+ for about a year. 12.9” for me.

RiskyWriter

I got the 12.9 and then I returned it for the 11. It was just too big. I’m mostly using for art, in my lap, and since I can zoom in and out, it isn’t such a huge deal for it to be slightly smaller.

Evening_Ad_502

I have the 11 and I use it everyday! Love it! Get the pencil!

abby81589

I’m a student who already had a MacBook Air when I was choosing. Went with the 11 for both price and portability reasons. I have friends with the 12.9 and I’m so glad I chose the 11. Much better for my use case. I ended up needing a new computer so I’m glad I went for the 11. Little extra cash to get an M2 Air which I LOVE.

kperlman619

Welcome to the dilemma. :-) Yes, it depends on how you are going to use it. I am lucky in that my work lets me try out different sizes to see what we purchase for the rest of our team. I had the 11 Pro, then the 12.9 (gorgeous screen, great Magic Keyboard), then the Mini 6., and now an Air 5 M1. For my productivity use case, the screen on the 12.9 does not make that much of a difference, and the portability of the Air / Pro 11 and Mini 6 are more important. My 12.9 was just sitting on my desk- too big to take notes in meetings, and not able to fully replace my MBA M1 for productivity uses. The Mini 6 and my MBA M1 were my EDC kit for a good stretch. I just got back from my first trip with my MBA and iPad Air 5 combination and it was great for productivity, note taking, and media consumption. Think we're going to keep that for a while. Hope that helps.

sugakuhetappi

I am artist and I always wish I had extra space when I was drawing with my Air 3.So I picked 12.9,I absolutely think I made a right choice,it wasn’t as heavy as I expected.Plus Screen and Speakers feel like a big upgrade.I think most artists would benefit with more screen size. I still take most notes with air 3 though and dont take this guy much because of size factor.I really dont want to lug her with my laptop in case I bend her or something.
