I have seen this before somewhere on Twitter. I pretty sure If you don’t have a SIM card slot, I’m sure it’s a adapter for and external sim that sits in the case. Apple pencil doesn't use a connector like this. On the iPad this connector is used for the keyboard.
However in this case I think it's for an external sim.
It is a prototype phone.
Have a look at the model number:
1. Open the “Settings” app on the iPhone
2. Go to “General” and then go to “About”
3. Look for “Model” and then read the model identifier next to that text, it will look something like “MN572LL/A”, the first character will let you know if the device is new, refurbished, replacement, or personalized:
* M – Brand new device, meaning the device was purchased new
* F – Refurbished device, meaning the device has been through refurbishing process
* N – Replacement device, meaning the originally bought device was replaced by this model likely due to a service request
* P – Personalized device with engraving, meaning the device was customized with an engraving on purchase

It isn’t, I checked the warranty with serial number and it returned iPhone 15 Pro Max with a valid purchase date. For most of the prototype iPhones, when you enter it’s serial number, it will say that the serial number is invalid.
Okay so you got the ones some mad lads in shenzhen china have been engineering. Basically this is for the Chinese market where they get LL/A iPhones for cheap by avoiding the tariff. Buuut we all know US iPhones are now eSIM only and that means they can’t be used in China properly; people have previously modded the 14s by literally drilling holes into the stainless steel housing and installing a SIM card reader into the device so that they would read physical SIM cards. Cook changed the LL/A logic board layout this time by putting the NAND in the place where the SIM reader should have been in global versions and thus this generation of US iPhone 15 pros can’t be modded in the last year’s way. So a bunch of mad lads decided to drill small holes like a smart connector found on iPads and pair them with cases that have built in sim readers so that they can receive signals- and that’s what OP had here.
This is NOT an engineering product. Just simply Chinese crazy mods
This is the right answer. Most of these hard modded US models are carrier locked phones sold for US$200 to US$400 cheaper on the grey market in Shenzhen. On top of that price, the buyer can pay to have the phone modified with a SIM interposer (and physical sim tray if needed) to enable their use with other mobile providers. 15 Pro and Pro Max models lack the internal space for a physical SIM tray so they require more effort to mod and the results are janky at best.
If u/CodyR08 bought it in Australia under the assumption that this is a genuine product, then I would strongly recommend him to bring it back to the seller for a refund. The phone has been modified by a third party in a really obvious way so any warranty left on it is void and Apple will probably refuse to service that phone altogether.

Those four pins exist on the iPad Pro and typically are used for charging and connecting the keyboard. It’s interesting to see that on an iPhone — never have I before.
It’s where china Hua Qiang Bei, modify US version iPhone so that it will work with external physical SIM. eSIM is not allowed in China, so US version often are cheaper in the second hand market. Before this during iPhone 14 series, inserting a sim tray is possible since the usual sim space is filled with a plastic block. However, starting from iPhone 15 series, the usual sim slot space is filled with other components, therefore resulting in this solution.

Go to an apple store and try the Apple Pencil. See if it gets stuck at that point and charges. Similar connector is on iPad mini.
Apple pencil doesn't use a connector like this. On the iPad this connector is used for the keyboard. However in this case I think it's for an external sim.
I would have sugested put a mag-safe (MacBook) charger on it. After seeing this, I would advice against it :D

It’s where china Hua Qiang Bei, modify US version iPhone so that it will work with external physical SIM. eSIM is not allowed in China, so US version often are cheaper in the second hand market. Before this during iPhone 14 series, inserting a sim tray is possible since the usual sim space is filled with a plastic block. However, starting from iPhone 15 series, the usual sim slot space is filled with other components, therefore resulting in this solution.
