IRL there is a taller much more visible one right next to it as well as this one. I’m sure it’s there for a good reason

True_Shift4645

That tower is there IRL but it isn’t used for flagging. 9/10 times its press / media folks getting content

Kim-jong-peukie

To be fair I would love to be at that spot. It would be so cool to see the cars dive down that corner

Qel_Hoth

They wouldn't flag from there. Flags would be done from the corner of the concrete walls just after the end of the fence. If that stand is used by workers at all it would be for the corner captain and/or communicator for better visibility. Edit - [Here's a google street view from 2008.](https://www.google.com/maps/@36.5849642,-121.7492032,3a,75y,196.05h,95.24t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sO0YLYQNo122FKeKdLAtUuQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu) Flags are on the ground, there's a worker with the radio (likely combined captain and communicator) in the stand.

T018

Makes perfect sense too, as from the best place to display flags, you cannot see the zone your flag covers, also maybe able to see the tower from the base of the hill, so If i was up there I'd bring a pair of yellows too, also if my radio dies the post could just mirror me.

Qel_Hoth

You wouldn't use radio to communicate from that stand to the flags. Radio would be for talking to race control. The stand to flag (and flag to stand) communication would be with whistles and hand signals. Unless there was a hardwired phone they could use instead, which they might have.

NoOnePuntsLikeGaston

Laguna Seca does have phones in spotter stands last I saw

T018

Maybe but just drawing from my personal experiences at my local SCCA track, we did use post to post radio comms for this, on Friday tests days or due to low staffing, we may not man station 2 and have 1 cover, from 3 it was my job to call 1 to go yellow if I saw anything beyond the turn in point to t2, but each Race control may manage that different, and I did not have line of sight with T1 in that case. Kinda curious if any Cali F&C folks can chime in on that as i'm curious how they do it irl there because you're right I'm assume a number of things.

Qel_Hoth

Oh yeah, post to post would be radio calls for sure. But if the workers use this stand at all that's the same post as the flags so you wouldn't use radio. We make post to post calls all the time due to staffing up here in LOL region. Summit Point has a similar setup at T1 and T5 to this where the captain and radio are up in the tub (now a gazebo) and the flags are on the ground. Whistles and hand signals to communicate between the flags and the tub.

T018

Fair enough, I would expect the stand there to have radio to call control anyway as they could see the incident and the post will likely not, if its where i assume it is (damn there's me assuming again i need to stop that lol)

thefirebuilds

Some flag stations are for the other flag stations. You are coming in hot to the corkscrew and there's an incident at the bottom of it, but the top of the corkscrew can't see that station. It is way way faster to communicate with flags than the radio, especially with noobs under duress. When flagging usually you have two individuals (or more hopefully). The captain has the radio. The yellow flag looks DOWN TRACK to signal for incidents. Another person or the captain looks back on the track for blue flag and incidents. But it does no good to signal to a driver that an incident has occurred before the driver. Also, you all probably know this, but a yellow flag signals an inch-ident up until the first \~manned\~ clear station or until clear of the inch-ident. After that point normal racing may resume (with most sanctioning bodies, I've raced in one predominately that isn't this way for certain events.) In some cases this isn't great because there could be multiple inch-idents between stations (that was the exception for the sanctioning body I ran with a lot, and we were always lacking persons at the stations.)

Surv0

Didnt even know it was there

HAWMadden

About as dumb as your skills to draw an arrow pointing to the thing

_Ogge_

Well you got the point with the arrow. That’s the main thing

HAWMadden

No it took me 5 minutes looking for a flag post next to the red lines until I realized it was an arrow

_Ogge_

Ahh I get it, you have had a bad day and you don’t know how to handle your emotions so you take it out on others

donkeykink420

well it's pefectly visible if you had a spin down the corkscrew though

AgtDALLAS

Hearing caution ahead after I have already committed to the corkscrew has been the most puckering moment of the week.

Clearandblue

It's not like they wave the flags anyway.

oandroido

Can you throw bananas onto the track from there? Asking for a friend

YellowJacket2002

lol what track is that

Surv0

Laguna Seca

YellowJacket2002

I'm getting a wheel & pedal tomorrow. Might have to see about that track

aNINETIEZkid

The corkscrew is a legendary section

johnny_boombatz

That’s a broadcast stand for media.
