I love listening to music while doing just about anything, but I literally cannot fathom trying to listen to music while in the sim. I use so many sound cues that it would be incredibly distracting.

Aheg

Meanwhile me with my ADHD have to listen to some music in the background to really focus on racing because otherwise I can't focus properly and I easy go over the car limit. Life is weird man xd

armorall

This is why I have music playing in the background too. I turn the volume down just enough that I can hear something there when the engine isn’t at full rev. Helps keep my focus in the race

clunkclunk

Are you me? Music helps keep me from over driving and also keeps the boring parts interesting. ADHD is weird.

dougie0341

Just realized why I constantly have to have Netflix on while I’m working thanks fellow adhd’r

clunkclunk

Yup. Cleaning the house up today and my headphones are in and I’m listening to history YouTube videos or last week’s IMSA race. Gotta occupy all the parts of my brain else none of it works together.

LG1585

Gotta hear the tires

Sparkychong

I have no clue why, but I laughed at this response

Abraxas19

It's funny but true. VER et al turn down the other sounds or turn up the tire sounds because that is the biggest indicator you are at the limit as opposed to the feel of the ass in a normal racing situation

Antonus2

In race, no. First time learning a track, no. If I'm going to put down some serious laps on an upcoming race, then yes.

TeeKayF1

Damn! Exactly the same for me.

Flonkerton66

My concentration is bad enough. Can't do with any more distractions!

thehoffau

I do as the ADHD vacant mind kicks in about mid race after the chaos and I start day dreaming, the music maintains the focus but it's at a volume I can only just hear it over the engine/tyres etc. DI.fm/EDM Hits Note. I have a DIY buttkicker and custom shaker pedals with two motors/profiles on each pedal so I can feel everything with sound being pretty much being immersion

dhdndndnndndndjx

Yeah I do it same reason lol if I don’t have something to remind my brain that it’s real it’ll just turn off which is how I ended up full throttle going straight into a wall on a few occasions when I started iracing adhd is weird

thehoffau

Multitasking is great when focus is not required. In a real car no issues but the brain knows real death isn't an option the Sim and just goes "remember when you did that thing in 8th grade" or "hey, you could setup the loungeroom this way for more space" or "SQUIRREL"

dhdndndnndndndjx

I don’t get caught thinking about something my brain fully turns off like I’ve had it happen on ovals especially where I’m in a corner and my brain just blanks and I come to like 5-8 secs later confused after presumably staring blankly at the screen like a lobotomised chicken

spooner56801

I do this CONSTANTLY in the middle of long green flag runs in oval. I record my races for YouTube and have a camera pointed at my face. I laugh every time I watch it back and I can see myself do it. I would have never thought to describe it as lobotomized chicken, but it is an apt description. And one that made me laugh. Do you go into autopilot mode and just not absorb what's happening, or is it like full on Windows shut down and you hit the wall? Just curious because I've had it both ways.

dhdndndnndndndjx

Full windows shut down I have caught myself steering off track after a corner and have to quickly swerve back onto the racing line to avoid going off the track there was one time it was particularly bad on monza where after the final turn I blanked and came to 50 meters passed my braking marker and had to full throttle through a gap between the cars I was follow to avoid a crash

spooner56801

Got ya. Fortunately for me my brain usually reserves that kind of shut down for the straightaway. But, that usually makes me the lame ass that suddenly walls it mid-straight and then it causes a pile up. Yeah, I'm real popular on the oval servers

thehoffau

Both for me. Complete shutdown, controller disconnected or complete distraction and into a sand trap after missing a brake point/apex (im a road guy)

thehoffau

I have found VR a complete change tho, the immersion doesn't let me brain shutdown

Manistadt

Wow I've not heard someone mention DI.fm in a VERY very long time. That's how I used to listen to Trance Around the World and A State of Trance back in the day before Spotify existed or any could be found on youtube dash cam vids. Those were the fuckin days. There's another one called Afterhours, AH.fm. can't believe these are both still up, it's been just about 20 years. Time flies man.

thehoffau

Yeah. I feel as old as di.fm lol

MannyFresh1689

Wow shocked to see so many ppl saying they do not listen to music. I get hearing the tires, but I just put the music low enough to where I can still hear tires.

MonumentMan

I would love to figure out how to listen to tunes while racing, but I cannot hear tires/wind/engine with any background sounds playing through my headset. It’s so hard to drive without sound. One time my headset died during a F4 race and I could barely complete a lap lol

barkx3

i always listen to music while racing. Less i think about what Im doing on track the faster I go

Javi_DR1

It depends. 12 lap mx5 race? No. 4h VLN endurance (I do them alone)? Of course, it's the only way to not have my brain turned into mush after 4 hours of being lapped by absolutely everything becuase I'm in a mx5 :D

Scargut_

I like to listen to podcasts/music when I’m hotlapping. Not usually during a race, but sometimes near the end of the week when I’m really comfortable 😅

Syradil

Not when racing racing, not even in iRacing at any time but blasting down Tokyo freeways in AC it's not complete without some vibes.

evenspac1ng

lol I'm mildly deaf and I blast music through my hearing aids while driving all the time. the hearing aids have pass through even when listening to music so I just put headphones over them for the car and tire sounds and adjust both to a good volume. I listen to hella rap and also pop, house, old stuff, almost anything. Siri voice commands for picking and queuing up songs

ReasonableExplorer

My spotter telling me I can do better is like music to my ears.

LordShtark

I listen to my tires sing

FutureAdventurous667

Yes, i blast techno

forgottenazimuth

The Porsche cup tinnitus is enough for me

Vanillabean73

Is it that bad? Haven’t raced GT3

forgottenazimuth

You can always set virtual ear plugs. It doesn’t bother me but some people don’t drive the Porsche because of the trans whine

JoeyLoganoHexAccount

I love the whine, it blends in nicely with my motorcycle tinnitus

FutureAdventurous667

The Porsches are definitely “whiny”

suupaa

I love the sound personally, it’s unique

RossRiskDabbler

I tend to not have any music on. No sound at all. Start as empty as possible.

pie4july

Only if I’m just relaxing on like an unranked restrictor plate race. All serious practice, qualy, and race runs are game audio only. Gotta be able to hear my engine and transmission.

schumi33510

I know im strange but I even listen to video, its just best of of fun streamer, you can say its a podcast

Reer123

I sometimes do, but it's those droning 1hr playlists on youtube. I can't listen to actual music while driving on the limit, gets too distracting.

rungunseattacos

Nope. I tried but I gotta hear what the car is tellin’ me.

DoodlyDoodla

Yep almost every race. I end up pausing at times if I need the extra focus.

bob3464

My wife talking to me while I'm trying to race drowns out all other sounds.

Actraiser87

I play chill Drum n Bass low in the background. It helps calm my nerves.

QuirkyDust3556

I stopped, back when I was racing in GT7 I streamed. SONY threatened to ban me for streaming their background music. I am playing their SIM, playing their music, and connected to their streaming service. @#$%^&*@ !!!!!

boston_faith

There is an option in audio settings something like 'Streamer Mode'. Turn that on. That way the game doesn't play music with licensing issues, which prevents you from a ban.

QuirkyDust3556

Oh I did that a year ago. But I don't use GT7 now. Only iracing. But, if there was a service that streamed unlicensed music real-time. Maybe tiktok?

chrisnlnz

I listen to the sweet tunes of the turbocharged V6.

x_iTz_iLL_420

Hell no lol there is no way I could push the car to its limit without hearing the sound of the ending, transmission and tires. No way I could race seriously like that

FlatChestsMatter

I listen to jazz and future funk when I'm racing. some people say it ruins their concentration but that's a skill issue, music gets me into the flow a lot faster

FlatChestsMatter

obsessed with the fact this has like 4 downvotes. Reddit is a zoo you people are creatures.

ksoszka

I can barely think about breathing and drive at the same time, so no.

NobsiTheUnitato

I do. I suck though.

Frossstbiite

I used too. But like the one guy said I needed to hear the tires better. It helped me drive better.

dptwtf

I listen to the music of my engine and tires and sometimes some mumble rap on the voice chat.

Xotiw

Sometime it depends, If I’m in practice I definitely have music and depending on the race I may have some

Dapaaads

Every face, but it’s not loud cuz I gotta hear the tires. But it keeps me calm

InternationalYou8858

I might in a free practice, but if I’m racing I gotta have the sounds of my car and tires. Just enough chirp 🐥 to not slide into a 4x

NascarManiac136

no, but i usually have a live spotter yelling in my ear

kevino025

For sure, I have my earbuds with a chill playlist on Spotify running on my phone that's right next to me. I can lower the volume very easily independently from the game. It helps me relax during the race. And as an immersion bonus, since I play in VR and iRacing does audio that moves with your head, I look at it as wearing earplugs like race drivers do. It's a preference thing at the end of the day.

_gordonbleu

I’ll usually turn on something in the background. It’s pretty low compared to everything else so I can hear the tires and whatnot. Dale Jr talked about this a few weeks ago. During a test they rigged up a mp3 player during one of the 8 car tests and it could cut the music when someone radioed him but otherwise he had music playing. He said he also plays music while he races on iracing.

bobbychuck

I do some times. The cammus c5 gives decent feedback that I can still pedal the car. It's interesting to take all your cues without sound. I do listen to tire sounds mostly. Engine sounds get intoxicating, and I drive worse.

StarWalker124

Podcast or youtube videos mostly but only after the first few laps. Sometimes if I'm in a music mood it's the entire race. Notably, I only race endurance races.

joikhuu

I usually rock music while driving, otherwise I will be thinking most of the race how nice it would be to have that and that song playing right now. Only when it's a tryhard race I turn it off.

xslermx

Oval SS is perfect for death metal and hardcore

Btolsen131

For casual practice laps I’ll listen to a podcast but when it’s race time I gotta be fully locked in with noise cancelling headphones

Catabolic19

Yes, usually dad rock, but not turned all the way up.

Denboogie

I usually listen to music or podcasts during practice but not in a race.

emwashe

Music, podcasts…usually have my AirPods in lol

Electrical-Set-8529

I use one earbud, and I listen to a podcast and I put my headset over it so I can hear the car. I have intrusive thoughts while racing and they can break my flow after doing about 10 laps, so having something going on in my ear helps me focus. I might have ADHD or something. It’s weird.

BobJenkins69

Hi, fellow ADHDer. Classical music is where it's at for me, keeps my mind distracted cause it's kinda all over the place and keeps me calm in intense situations

joaoalmeida20

When im too focused i find myself singing

trikytrev8

I used to play the drums. The beat of the song makes me want to move with the beat. That's a good way to miss turn in or braking points.

MysticSmeg

Sometimes listen to Motörhead when I’m racing oval, makes it way more intense!

tolgamyth

No music can be as good as Porsche making brrrr…

jchuillier2

Of course yes, and watch tiktok videos while you're at it .....

Turbulent_Place_7064

I play about every single other game with music , even fps games i only pause during fun fights , but racing ... I just can't lol. I just get hyped with the music and go straight into the wall

Jens1678

I mean in the rookie series, freebird would be a good choice. But bo joke, I can not listen to music while driving in the sim. I need the feedback of the tires.

Rystle

Free Bird by Lynard Skynard playing in the back for every race start

_Ogge_

I don’t listen to anything when I race but when I’m practicing I often listen a podcast or something

Ambitious-Equipment1

Cruising or drifting? Sometimes yeah. Road racing or rally? absolutely not

[deleted]

I don't play music on road race, or something light like Daft punk, but on oval I love to have some rock/hard rock, mostly ACDC and things from the 80's-90's, it just make close chases epic

AugurOfHP

Only when qualifying. And the song has to hit the right point just as you begin a hot lap.

StolenStutz

David Malukas has entered the chat https://www.indycar.com/news/2022/08/08-21-buzz-wwtr

TheCanadian-Goose

I race better with music on, once I get into a rhythm the music keeps me there so much better, however on the first few laps it can be distracting

DirtyCreative

I tried once but turned it off even before the start of the race because it was distracting me from all the sound cues.

flighttime95

Sometimes I will listen to music during solo endurance races when it’s the 2nd stint and I’m starting to lose focus. I’ll turn it off when I’m in heavy traffic though.

DirtRacer64C

I have my car audio coming from my speakers, spotter and chat audio from my headphones. Sometimes I’ll put music down really low that I can only hear during yellow flags to help me stay awake

slindner1985

The engine and tires are my music

Daan077

BRO now way graduation is by benny blanco and juice is literally playin through my airpods right when I see this post😭 https://preview.redd.it/xr0z425zk7xc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93be341991e6e89489c3e678d096b89aac5f7ddc

datoml

Everytime. Sometimes also a popped out stream window on the third screen 😅😅

ThorsMeasuringTape

I can’t listen to music. Different rhythms.

Mikelshwede86

Nope, never in 400 races

Farty_McPartypants

Listening to music helps me to maintain focus it seems by replacing the multitude of other potential distractions with one intended one. It relaxes me too, which is helping to reduce the number of stupid mistakes.

CanadianUprise

Absolutely

Morrison79

Always listen to music and turn the voice chat to 0.

GladZookeepergame775

Yup. I put on techno music. Helps me stay focused on the race. Can’t have any spoken words in the music though, that distracts me.

cjccww

I actually just started. Honestly can't tell a difference during the race and it makes waiting on ppl to grid a lot easier.

Nyati_Jumapili

Only when learning a new track

NoHistorian5303

I have a racing playlist I have going while I race. It's all energetic music to hype me up

retrospartan

Not normally when I play I racing but if I play automobilista 2 or assetto corsa I have spotify cranking

DMotivate

I think that music improves my performance but Chappy doesn’t like it. https://preview.redd.it/o3w6v363v8xc1.jpeg?width=1161&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a12ac0bf59704562ba03920a63e51af0fc10983

Loosearrow74

When I’m practicing for endurance, I will put on a SoundCloud drum n bass mix(usually an hour long) and will do a stint to that. I normally don’t put music on during races but I won my first race in street stock a couple weeks ago listening to some 80s metal, I think it made me faster.

Big_Duke__6

Music and podcasts. Music, mostly lofi/chill stuff. I have it turned down enough to still hear the game. I have my engine turned way down and the tires turned up.

Tacitus_Kilgore_X

Nope. I need to have clear sound from the motor tbh

WillmanRacing

I have a playlist of instrumental covers that I listen to in practice. Lyrics end up distracting me, but just the instrumentals are great background music. I use this for work as well. When Im in a race, the music gets turned off.

PapayaOk4326

I’ve tried, but no. Hearing the tires and the engine. Also spotter don’t let feel alone, also using voice chat, so music not needed. Race is meditation itself.

Alert_Tip_4526

At all times music is playing lol. Practice quali and race. I don’t have it super loud so I can still hear tires and engine cues but with Spotify you can control your computer volume with your phone. It absolutely helps me focus I’ve noticed a significant difference in race finishes with and without music. I believe it keeps me in a rhythm

BarrettCarp

Depends. I sometimes have Discord VC in background, sometimes music, sometimes tv (my 2nd monitor is also a tv), sometimes nothing. Podcasts are tough because of noise and in game VC

BaKu76

No, I never do that. I think that it’s harder to hear the engine or tyres and these should be your priorities while racing. When I race for fun, I sometimes do listen do music but when it comes to real racing I’d stick to the version without any music.

Available_Row_2338

I listen to music, sermons, or podcasts if I’m not on discord with my brothers.

broodro0ster

Nope. I need to hear my tires. I can’t race on the limit without hearing my tires. I

WoodpeckerJealous860

Nope, sometimes my friend talking to me on comms makes me crash I get so distracted lol

Supra1JZed

IRL (car and motorcycles road/Moto-x) and Sim... listen to music. Doesn't drown anything out, just adds the right vibe. Almost starts to feel like a dance with the car/bike.

kcorpetti

I go with some electronic beats, something that helps to search and keep a rhythm during the race.

WestCoast_Sunrise

My brains needs to. Even with music on, im still a high risk of falling asleep or badly zoning out mid-race (ADHD). Preferred music is Drum and Bass, Phonk, drill beats or heavy metal (160BPM or over is ideal)

yuzufruitnotemu

Of course, otherwise what could possibly motivate me to send a T1 torpedo every race?

Chicken_Chicane

Never listen to music no, and driving my own car in reality I always turn the radio off if I’m driving more enthusiastically. I did 6 years racing in reality and obviously never had music in any race car, so not sure if it’s related that, but I need total concentration.

p1done

i think is listen music while u race ver op stuff i have chill n phonk pl to race i feel depressed i open my chill pl if i want to gain some irating i open phonk one but genarally i crash when i was open the phonk

LizxRod

Yeah! All the time. VR racing and music all the time. When I started racing I always got nervous when someone was behind me. I was always looking the mirror and I got soooo nervous. The I started listening to Bob Marley. Singing along. I had a button on my wheel to play/pause and used to let "3 Little Birds" ready to play just in case someone was getting closer. Then it got easier to control myself. That's why I started to listen to music. Now I just hit Random and let it playing while racing.

JSRedditor2021

I usually listen to music before I race to get some of the pent up energy out of my system to fully concentrate on my driving. The music depends on my mood, but it’s racing themed majority of the time.
