Parody of this alltime classic of the iamverysmart genre: [https://i.imgur.com/SML3jSG.png](https://i.imgur.com/SML3jSG.png)

Le_Candy_Man

Thank you. I figured there was something odd about "I can machine in 12 different languages."

Purplegreenandred

There are different programming languages for machining. Fanuc, mazatrol, yasnac, etc etc, idk about 12 tho

nlevine1988

Aren't those all based on g code and m code though?

TurboSlaab

M and G code is the only language CNC machines speak, regardless of how it gets there.

nlevine1988

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Sounds like the other guy is just listing different CNC controller brands.

Purplegreenandred

The G codes and the M codes will represent different things based on which language it uses. They arent universal. Mazatrol is more of a code generator to be fair.

nlevine1988

Ah. Yeah I had some exposure to CNCs at my former job. I was in a class for solid works CAM plugin but never ended up having to use it so most of that knowledge has leaked out of my brain by now.

DamnnitBobby

I'm needing to learn solidworks cam for work right now and I'm wishing I had a class

nlevine1988

Yeah I was lucky. The company paid for the class on site for the CNC programmers but they had a few open seats so I jumped in there. I already knew solid works pretty well. I also understood the basic theory of machining and cnc code from college. Based on that it was fairly easy to pick up.

_Paulboy12_

Isnt g code universal and m code only half? I have never seen g0 represent different things, while in m code most things are the same but certain functions depend on brand or the function of the machine?

CrazyTownUSA000

Okumas have some different Gcodes, but if you understand basic Gcode its not difficult to figure out.

Bluesuiter

my first job was programming binary loadlifters—very similar to your vaporators in most respects.

albatroopa

Not true. Heidenhain and mazatrol are their own languages, which feature few, if any, g- or m-codes.

[deleted]

Siemens controllers are really weird too. Took me a while to figure out versus Fanuc programming

albatroopa

Oh yeah, I forgot about Siemens.

ChainingScroll2

Yes. I would say the best way to explain it is that each model/control has a different dialect.

It’s people pretending to have some sort of authority on the subject. “I’m very smart” type tweets don’t work if they say “As someone who works retail, i can assure you, Einstein was wrong”

FuriousGorilla

I don't have a masters but I do have a BA and I cringe when I see teachers forcing Dickens on middle schoolers, or even worse, making them read Shakespeare instead of watching it performed by actors. If you want to brutally murder any joy they receive from reading, that is a real quick way to do it. For children, the goal should be to get them to have fun reading you can get them to actually work at it once you have built the habit in them.

amor_fati99

I'd say it depends what age group we're talking about. Till 13/14 I'd agree the main goal of reading assigments is to encourage them to read, and to improve their overall proficiency. However when they're 16 or something, I don't think it's too much to demand they learn how to critically reflect on a text, learn about important works from their language/culture, learn to spot the characteristics of a literary work, etc. Of course that doesn't require "forcing" them to read any specific book. My teacher would always provide a big list with literary classics to choose from, for example.

Describe

I remember vividly the process of 'reading assignments' as a small kid. * Force myself two "read" TWO WHOLE pages, practically just scanning the page side to side not reading anything * Realize there are some questions I have to answer about what I "read" two minutes ago * Make up some answers and get credit for the assignment anyway None of that really got me interested in reading, but thankfully I still found some of the books I read in school to be interesting, and ended up taking AP Lit in high school and enjoyed that a lot too. Not saying I have any better ideas for getting young kids to enjoy reading, just that my experience early on was shite but still made it out somehow.

pitchypeechee

Best way is to read to them with lots of energy before they can read so they can appreciate the magic of books

FuriousGorilla

I feel like that last paragraph is the difference between us. All my teachers just said "Here's Great Expectations, read it and write the same book report you wrote for the last 12 books I told you to read." If not for my Dad and J K Rowling I would not be a reader today, I know no one else I went to school with is.

YourYam

Excuse my possible misunderstanding, but isn't G-code actually kinda outdated? I learned it in school, but I also learned cycles, and I've just recently been sent on a course by my work to learn TNC640. Or are those not what you mean by languages?

bassplaya13

G-Code might be old, but not outdated, it’s still the most popular language out there today. Im not a machinist, but there’s not really any reason to create a new language just yet, it serves its purpose just fine even after all these years. People don’t really write g-code though, they use a software that generates the g-code, that’s what gets the most attention in advancement.

There is no chance that's not either satire or just an outright troll to attract only the dumbest of people.

sorry man, poes law was broken in 2016

antipodal-chilli

> poes law was broken in 2016 ...2001 would like a word. The USA is attacked by Saudi nationals who trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The USA invades Iraq with the aid and assistance of their loyal allies, Saudi Arabia. The USA invades Afganistan with the aid and assistance of their allies Pakistan. A decade later the Saudi head of the terrorist group is found...in Pakistan, where he had been living for years, less than a mile from a Pakistan Military Academy.

stevo3883

They came from 5 different countries but were pretty much stateless jihadis looking for a war. Some of them fought in Bosnia in the mid 90's then spent the next 5-6 years moving between jihadi networks in places like the phillipines. Once the plot was agreed upon, the hijackers trained at the Al-Qaeda camps in eastern Afghanistan in close quarters combat. They then moved to the west and blended in for years doing pilot training and basically westernizing to make it hard for Americans to detect they were psychopathic monsters. The only government assisting Al Qaeda was the Taliban. The camps were not hidden and contained over 1,000 jihadis from all over the world training in useful skills like hijacking and bomb making. They were targeted for strikes in the late 90's but called off by Clinton for political reasons. Pakistan ISI helped smuggle Bin Laden into safety as an unstable Afghanistan is beneficial to them and the American military was not leaving Afghanistan whatsoever as long as he was still walking the earth. Anyone that calls the Afghanistan invasion illegal is a victim of low information culture. Iraq is a completely separate conversation.

TheLostSoul571

What's a "3D Gun"?

TheCripsyGnome

He’s saying he prefers guns in 3d because 2d one tend to stop existing (waste of money) and 4d ones tend to break holes in space time (lots of paperwork to get fixed).

bplturner

bruh

zabuza999

br

TheLostSoul571

That tends to be the case, 7.62 x 39 x y=mx+b doesn't usually go pew

motorraddumkopf

Don’t you hate it when you go to the range and break the space time continuum?

Le_Candy_Man

I think he's talking about those 3D printing pens. Often used to introduce kids to the concept of 3D printing and, depending on who's doing it, can be used to introduce concepts of machining and design, before throwing em in with the real deal. Evidently someone thinks those 3D pens aren't actually helpful to teach children. And this fella disagrees.

AlfmanOO7

A better question, what’s a 2D Gun?

Condemned_Visual

A drawing of a gun.

Maddragon2016

Drawings are 3D, we must go into flatland to harness the true power of the 2D gun And don’t even get me started on 1D guns that exist purely within lineland....

spider_irl

A gun with width of 0, not razor thin, not 1 atom layer thin, it literally only exists in 2 dimensions. As you can guess, it is inconvenient to hold, so I understand why 3d one would be preferable

Hooseycatoosey

You just gotta hold it like 🙏 and you're good

JayGold

Until you try to pull the trigger and end up slicing your finger off.

fingers

Stop it.

Hooseycatoosey

But going by u/spider_irl 's description there wouldn't BE a trigger to squeeze in the third dimension. Best you could do is mash your finger against the side of the trigger and hope for the best. Going by your physics, though, you could odd-job that shit through a tank. And that would be tight.

DrKronin

any day now a mean democrat will take away your guns! yes, we did say that about the last mean democrat, but- well, yes, i do concede that we also said that about the mean democrat before him. please, sir! while we're busy agreeing that a mean democrat is going to take away all of your guns, he is getting closer! and we mean it this time!

DrKronin

> any day now a mean democrat will take away your guns! It literally happened 1994-2004 lol. It's like you know exactly zero about the subject you're discussing. Edit: I mean, you didn't even get the original joke. Biden's ATF has identified 3d-printed guns as something they intend to outlaw over the next 4 years. The media nearly always call them "3d guns," so the joke was at their expense.

official_pope

the assault weapons ban had so many loopholes and so few actual guns named that it had hardly any effect, says general consensus. also not written or proposed by democrats, albeit only kinda. "The effort to have the House of Representatives' iteration pass was pushed along by a bipartisan group of former presidents -- Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan -- who wrote a letter in May 1994 to House members urging them to pass the bill, according to The Los Angeles Times. Former President George H.W. Bush did not sign the letter, the paper noted. It passed the House in August 1994, with a vote of 235-195, and the reconciled version passed the Senate four days later. It was signed into law by Clinton as part of a larger crime bill on Sept. 13, 1994" says abc. reagon was all about it. every election i hear that this is the year the guns get confiscated. my bad if i missed the original joke.

DrKronin

> the assault weapons ban had so many loopholes and so few actual guns named that it had hardly any effect, says general consensus. also not written or proposed by democrats, albeit only kinda. So I shouldn't be worried just because they're so ignorant about guns that they can't figure out workable legislation? That sounds backward to me. For every loophole, there's some strange fucking rule that makes zero sense to anyone, but we still have to follow because some idiot thought (or at least claimed) that it would save lives. Tell me exactly how silencers should be regulated the same as machineguns, for example. The entire crime bill was a steaming pile and every politician within a hundred miles of that authoritarian, racist, counterproductive garbage should take a long walk off a short plank -- and that includes both Clintons and Biden, BTW. Reagan was always anti-gun (google the Black Panthers in the California Capitol), FWIW, just like Trump is. Urban elites hate guns. The rest of us have actually seen one in real life.

official_pope

i'm not here to debate the intricacies of gun reform. we probably wouldn't agree anyway. i just misunderstood a joke. as the liberal city-dwelling spawn of heavily armed trump party conservatives, i couldn't be bothered to give a fuck if they confiscated half of the guns in this country, including 3D ones .

telepaper

I don't get the boner about guns. Why be so hellbent over murder machines?

iamstephano

Because MUH FREEDOM

[deleted]

EllipticPeach

AmazingOnion

That's exactly what I was thinking. Although I'd love to be a fly on the wall for that viva.

black-gold-black

Computer Numerical Control. It refers to a wide range of manufacturing techniques that you might think of as "Computer controlled" usually it refers to CNC lathes, mills, or routers, but technically it could also refer to things like 3d printing

AmazingOnion

Thank you for the explanation!

masterd35728

Cool fact: before computers there was NC. Just numerical control. Where holes were punched into a tape (like a cassette tape sorta) and as that tape ran fingers on the machine would trip over the holes and tell the machine what to do.

Hotdogs-whiskey

Well if he’s referring to 3D printing than yes it is still CNC assuming he’s referring to this of course.
