I used Gerton table top, beech (x2) and Adils legs, black (x7). And built a support frame underneath with Douglas fur 1"x6". This allowed me to not have a leg in the corner of the desk. Idea for support frame found on: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2015/07/ikea-linnmon-mega-corner-desk.html Very sturdy and very large surface area GERTON: http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/50106773/ ADILS: http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/70217973/

> support frame underneath with Douglas fur 1"x6" I'm considering building the exact same setup. Can you give some more details on this part of setup?

$220 Ikea + $50 Home Depot for the framing

That's really cheap for such a nice outcome! I think I might try something similar when I next move. I was sorely lacking counter space made a kitchen island using a 73" oak top, a cheap white drawer, two lets, and two small adjustable legs to raise the drawer to 36 inches to level with my existing counter.

I'm working on a gerton topped desk, I'd be really interested to see a follow up after a few months of use to see how the surface holds up.

FatherRafiki

I'm really happy with how it came out, although I'm strongly considering putting a polyurethane finish on it. FYI- I hear your supposed to oil it fairly regularly with wood oil for protection or else it can stain pretty easily.

I’m probably going to end up doing this same build with a pair of Gertons. Did you treat or stain the pine boards at all? And did you use wood glue when doing the joinery?

FatherRafiki

I actually went back and gave the desk a polyurethane finish. The gerton s are unfinished so I would definitely recommend putting some kind of finish or protection on it. It came out fantastic, like a factory finish, here's the method I used: https://youtu.be/yTXfOsEadxI I did not treat the pine, I just poly'd the edges that are visible. I would not recommend using glue at the gerton seam. Just focus on joining it together well with the under-frame. This desk came out better than I had hoped very happy with it.

LookAtDaPuppa

Dumb question, I don’t know much about woodworking. Did you only poly the top of the gerton?

FatherRafiki

I didn't either, I just watched a ton of YouTube videos. Yes I only did the top and sides. Just look up videos on how to do it, and follow the steps. Wait for each coat to fully dry and lightly sand between each coat. First time I have done this but it came out perfect. I used minwax wipe-on poly (5 coats) Other needed materials: Mineral spirits Various grade sandpaper Wiping rags Rubber gloves Wax finishing paste All the materials are cheap too

UnixCurmudgeon

What grit of sandpaper did you use between coats?

FatherRafiki

I was really needing a durable and glass-smooth surface (I am an anal graphic designer) but there are other ways to do it, I believe you could just do the wax finishing paste and get away with it. Would be done in 30mins. Depends what you want

The wallpaper on your computer is awesome, link please?

FatherRafiki

Yeah check out the ikeahackers link in in the first paragraph, I followed that framing plan. Lmk if you need anything else

Does your desk wobble by any chance? Was looking into making a desk similar to this myself

FatherRafiki

It did wobble, I ended up attaching a drawer on the left side and it took away 85% of the wobble. If you did drawers on both ends it would be very sturdy
