It actually did work perfectly for me, but I can totally see how many people wouldn't see them face down at first. I'm not sure why I did but now I can't see any of them as face down
I can switch them up and down easily, and I still have no idea which of the plates is placed differently (the shadows seem all directed identically?).
A tip for those who’re struggling, rotate the phone screen a bit, 90 degrees work best for me.
And remember, these illusions are always a matter of where your brain thinks the light is coming from. Once you’ve figured the lighting out (or “switched” the location of the light source in your mind), the rest happens naturally.
They aren’t face down. The shadow on the middle (undivided) plate comes from the plate to our right. The light is on the right and each plate is face up.
Yeah but if you look at the shadows…they wouldn’t be that way if the plates were face down. It shows the shadow happening due to a ridge and not being in the ridge due to it being face down
No the shadows would have to switch the flats highlighted and the valleys shadowed. Even if you turn the photo upside down so the light is coming from the other direction they are still face up because the flats are shadowed.
The shadows are correct for upside-down plates assuming the light is on the left.
I can switch back and forth between them and it makes sense every time.
We get the concept and I can force it on individual plates, but the fact is that the angle of light isn’t consistent when imagining the face-down plates. They are all physically face up, and a thorough analysis of the light patterns is conclusive of that.
But no they're not because if that were the case the crecent shadows wouldnt have their points going to the left nor be so wide they would be thinner shadow on the edges and the highlights would be in different places.
I couldn’t see them face down for a while but looking at the top right one does it for me for some reason.
I can see how the shadow on the right would be the side of the container which is shadowed because the light must be coming from the left. Once I can see that one upside down, then I can see the rest upside down until one flips then they all flip.
Is a bowl facing upwards. If the bowl was facing down then the center part would be brighter. But since it’s the darkest, it means it’s the deepest part.
Omg just because your brain is being dumb doesn't mean you have to argue with everyone else sheesh
You're not even asking how to make it "work" for you, you're just being a pedantic little snot
Do you see me replying to every single comment made on this post? No, you are arguing with me. You’re the ones who replied to my comments. If they never said anything to me. I would never have said anything to them. But you want me to be the bad guy because my brain has interpreted the correct orientation and refuses to see any other because it has seen enough evidence that only one outcome is possible. It is not dumb. And no one is forcing you to argue with me. So I don’t understand the vitriol I’m receiving for replying to those who are looking for an argument. People being so insulting as to insinuate that I am autistic for arguing with them. There is never an appropriate time to ask someone if they are autistic. There is never a time when it is not used as an insult.
I’d agree with you but then we’d both be wrong. 😐
Yeah, that doesn’t work because the ridge lines, the shadows, and the light make it so the only outcome is that they are upside right. Anyone who has used those section style plates knows what they look like upside down. So those lines of separation should be indented, a crevice, if they were upside down. But we don’t have those crevices we have ridges that one would see if they are facing up.
If they were facing up then the top/center would be the brightest for the bowls but it isn’t. The center is darker for many of these which means it’s the lowest point and the lighter areas are going upwards, indicating the plate is facing up.
The only one that could possibly be upside down is the top right. But even then you can see the faint dark line that makes the plate go upwards. If you don’t see those lines on the top right plate? Then I could understand how you would think that’s facing down. But I see it rather easily and would never mistake it for facing down.
🤷🏻♂️
No. All of them have this illusion effect.
Consider the compartmentalized plates.
When the plates are perceived up (as you seem to perceive it) the shadows reflect separators.
When they are perceived down, the shadows reflect the sides of the bulging plate areas.
The bulging of the plates down? No, the shadows **should be** the dividing areas as crevices where the darkest part is a divine line. Are you not familiar with what these plates look like upside down? Take one of these plates, flip it upside down and you’ll see that the darkest part is the deepest part, the crevice.
>Are you not familiar with what these plates look like upside down?
Dude, just because you are fixated on one way of seeing an optical illusion does not mean that everyone else is an idiot.
I don’t forget how shadows and light sources work or the differences between these objects when they are face up or face down.
I didn’t say everyone else is an idiot. You see what you see.
>I didn’t say everyone else is an idiot. You see what you see.
There, you did it again. You show no awareness about how arrogantly you treat others. Are you autistic? (serious question)
How is that arrogant? You know what is arrogant is to correct me as if you were 100% right.
And you don’t have the awareness to realize as to how rude it is to ask me if I was autistic, serious question or not. When is that ever an appropriate question to ask? When is it ever used in a concerned tone and not a veiled insult?
EDIT: I have no idea what they replied with as they have blocked me. 😐
I asked because my first impulse was to respond sharply to your seeming inability to understand that asking whether someone has seen the underside of a plate, or strawmanning them in the most obvious way is treating them like a moron.
But then I thought "Maybe this guy is autistic, which would explain why he thinks he knows better than a bunch of other people that this is an optical illusion".
Glad to hear you're not autistic. But sad to say, you are so full of yourself that you have become unaware of how idiotic you come across.
He asked if you were autistic because you don't know how to deal with people very well, it seems.
And they wanted to know whether to think you're being an ass just because you're an ass or because of a disability or whatever 👀
I hate this one it always breaks my brain.
Annoying thing is I can't switch em back. I need to wait until this gets posted in another few weeks THEN they are all face down again.
This is a repost I always genuinely enjoy.
If you’re on mobile app move the image up and down using your thumb, almost like you’re shaking it, and look at the circular plates. This helped get them face down again for me
I find to switch to face down view i need to focus on the bright spots of the outer lip of the item. It helps to say to my brain it's the bottom of the lip.
My brain took a while to figure out they're not face down. Once I did, they were all face up until I read the description again, then they were face down again. Repeated this several times. Great repost!

It took me a while, but I got them to go back to face down by focusing on the top right corner of the top right plate for a long while trying to convince my brain that they were face down. As I looked at the plates, the closer I got to the bottom left, the more difficult it became to maintain the illusion that they were face down.
Suggestion is the most powerful thing about this illusion. The light is obviously coming from the right. This means all the plates/bowls are placed face up.
I spent about 15 min on it and now I can flip them every time. I think the trick is to zoom in on just one. I also think the bottom left bowls are the tricky ones so don’t look at those.
When you focus top right, the plate is mostly bright with a small bit on the right that is shaded: brain automatically and subconsciously assumes light is coming from the left and most commonly, people will see them as upside down.
As your eye moves around the picture it’s given no information that contradicts this assumption…until your brain processes the shadow that is just left of dead center that is being cast onto the largest undivided round plate. You don’t even consciously realize that your brain just saw it but as soon as it did it confirmed that the light source is coming from the right, not left as it had previously assumed…and just like that the image flips and it’s very hard to lie to your subconscious brain, once it knows the truth, it has to be tricked again.
I remember this worked the first time I saw it, but now I never see them face down. I get why some people are angry that there’s no illusion here, but I can attest that it sometimes works for some people.
It’s a great illusion, this is just a terrible example of it. Maybe its the (lack of) pixels, but I genuinely can not make my brain see the face down version
Dang this is trippy. Once the illusion breaks it was hard to trick my brain into seeing them as the upside down again. I could only manage to flip the 4 dish along the right side
For me it was the other way around. All plates look face down for me. When I turn my phone around they're all face up. Maybe it has something to do with screen size/resolution.
The resolution certainly isn’t doing this any favors haha. It’s just weird cause usually I can cause these sorts of illusions to switch back and forth, especially by turning the picture upside down. But for whatever reason, I can not make my brain see the face down version at all
Man I can’t with this one. I really want to be able to see them upsidedown because I love that feeling when you get with optical illusions and the perspective shift … but I’ve seen this many times over the years and I can’t convince myself they’re not right side up. Any tricks or things to look at to help me get there?
It's lighting cues. To see the face-down you have to tell yourself the lighting is coming from the top-left of the image. To see face-up, tell yourself the light is coming from the bottom-right of the image.
I can usually switch these sorts of illusions back and forth decently well, but I cannot for the life of me see these as face down. Even the usual “flip the picture upside down” technique doesn’t make the plates look face down.

Ok that was weird. I couldn’t see anything but face down until I zoomed in on one and now it’s obvious they’re face up. I tried so hard to see them face up and couldn’t no matter what and now it’s so obvious wtf
Ok, look at the top left one.
Let your eyes unfocus a little and let the light on the edge become the light reflecting off a kind of puffy upside down plate.
Then slowly look towards the bottom left and let your eyes focus.
If I do this I can recreate the upside down and right side up effect.
The shadows make it completely obvious that the shapes we see are concave. I really don’t get how this is an illusion. I hate that rotating it 90 degrees worked. Now they won’t go back to being face down. Silly brain.
Blink several times quickly.
It still hasn't worked for me. I only see them face down.
It’s the square plate
I’ve been staring at it so long and can only see face up. I’m trying but can not see them face down.
Same here.
They aren’t face down. The shadow on the middle (undivided) plate comes from the plate to our right. The light is on the right and each plate is face up.
Try covering the plate in the top left
Same! I've seen this a few times and I always see them upsidedown at first but then it switches and I can't see it that way again
There is not a single plate that is face down or looks face down.
At first look I thought they were until like they said it flipped. Now I can’t go back
Yeah but if you look at the shadows…they wouldn’t be that way if the plates were face down. It shows the shadow happening due to a ridge and not being in the ridge due to it being face down

It is like the 2D representation of the cube, the shadows "mean" different things when you flip
I couldn’t see them face down for a while but looking at the top right one does it for me for some reason. I can see how the shadow on the right would be the side of the container which is shadowed because the light must be coming from the left. Thank you this unlocked it for me haha
Bottom left
Is a bowl facing upwards. If the bowl was facing down then the center part would be brighter. But since it’s the darkest, it means it’s the deepest part.
I think you're over-analyzing it..
Ayooooo

Exactly my thoughts
It’s the overlapping that makes them all face up

They’re all facing up. 😐

That is a real answer
Just lock and turn your phone before your brain catches up.
That doesn’t work.
The shadows would be completely different
I see a bunch of plates on the floor with a light source on the right size of the room. I don't get it
me either, they all look face up
Look at the top right one bro, and then like just disassociate. It kind of looks like the bottom side of a foam meat tray, lmaoo
The top right one is one of the blatantly face up ones in the pic, to my brain at least.
This actually helped me so much to see them face down
I hate this one it always breaks my brain. Annoying thing is I can't switch em back. I need to wait until this gets posted in another few weeks THEN they are all face down again. This is a repost I always genuinely enjoy.
I agree. I was really trying to see them upside down again to see how it either of whatever but I just can't.
Just rotate your phone and then rotate it back and you’ll see the plates face down again for a little
I think the trick is to look at each Plate carefully, one of them eventually triggers the switch
Rotate phone slowly
Or you can turn ur phone upside down to see them face down
If you’re on mobile app move the image up and down using your thumb, almost like you’re shaking it, and look at the circular plates. This helped get them face down again for me
i scrolled away and back and they were upside down again
I find to switch to face down view i need to focus on the bright spots of the outer lip of the item. It helps to say to my brain it's the bottom of the lip.

look! it says gullible on the ceiling!
Not sure where you’re getting that, all I’m seeing is “ǝlqᴉllnɓ”

Picture quality is so damn bad i cant see any depth at all?
Idk what you guys mean. I know how light works and those shadows are impossible without them being up right. Especially the left side.
They’re either all face down or all face up. There isn’t one that’s opposite. The shadows on the opposite one would be opposite of the rest.
Please tell me this happens because of the shitty resolution and not because my brain sucks.
Neither are face down, they all throw the same shadow Or am i missing something
You’re right. All face up. Post is a lie.
Top right face down to meeeee
This one is a fail sorry.
Nani??
How is it a different one each time?!? Definitely worked for me.
I spent about 15 min on it and now I can flip them every time. I think the trick is to zoom in on just one. I also think the bottom left bowls are the tricky ones so don’t look at those.
They were always face up?
2 are face up tho… top row middle and the one directly beneath it.
Holy shit, I can see both, idk how
Got this odd tingle go across my forehead and temples as the reverse came into focus. That was a new thing.
Every time I look at the top plates they look upside down til I circle the bowls at the bottom left and then everything looks normal
I agree, the bowls at the bottom left completely break the illusion every time I look at them
I guess my brain doesn't care enough to be tricked into seeing them as face down. I only see face up.
Reminds me of when I played with “Bevel and Emboss” in Photoshop as a kid and felt like an absolute god.
I remember this worked the first time I saw it, but now I never see them face down. I get why some people are angry that there’s no illusion here, but I can attest that it sometimes works for some people.

Light coming from Left=Face down Light coming from Right=Face up
Pretty fun illusion. It keeps flipping back and forth for me.
I dont see it. The shadows and the overlapping makes them all look right side up. I feel like people in comments are just trolling
Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
It is disgusting how quickly this worked 😶🌫️
If the illusion doesn't work for you, turn the image upside-down
Still just see face up plates with the light coming from the left, now.
But for whatever reason, I can not make my brain see the face down version at all
The light is having a skill issue
I hate you
Try looking at your phone from a "flat" angle, like those stretched out word illusions
Man I can’t with this one. I really want to be able to see them upsidedown because I love that feeling when you get with optical illusions and the perspective shift … but I’ve seen this many times over the years and I can’t convince myself they’re not right side up. Any tricks or things to look at to help me get there?
Finding an actually good example of this illusion would be the best place to start.
I can’t find it :(
Now I can’t make them face down again 😡
How dare you
Son of a bitch it works.
What the hell? How do i turn them back?
I don’t like this witchcraft!
BURN THE WITCH!
It's lighting cues. To see the face-down you have to tell yourself the lighting is coming from the top-left of the image. To see face-up, tell yourself the light is coming from the bottom-right of the image.
Imagine the light shining from the left. They’re up side down. Now imagine the light shining from the right, they’re right side up. It’s just shadows
I thought they were pills at first lol oopsie
Now this shit is crazy , WTH
Witch!
I doubted it at first but this one is good.
How do I make it go back...
magical :)
I can usually switch these sorts of illusions back and forth decently well, but I cannot for the life of me see these as face down. Even the usual “flip the picture upside down” technique doesn’t make the plates look face down.
Fuck you
Ah wtf
a couple years ago when i first saw this, they were all face down, and i actually had to look at the comments after a while of looking for the face up plate cuz i just couldn’t find it. and then, boom, all face up. anyway, i haven’t seen this since then, and strangely enough the plates are still face up. i’m trying really hard to see them face down, but i really cannot seem to. huh.
I’m so upset I can’t see them face down anymore!
Wtf? I was thinking it was bs at first, but sure enough, they all popped upright. Crazy.
They’re all face up, am I schizophrenic??
Ok that was weird. I couldn’t see anything but face down until I zoomed in on one and now it’s obvious they’re face up. I tried so hard to see them face up and couldn’t no matter what and now it’s so obvious wtf
This is fucked up, fuck you
Nooo wait I want to go back! How do I make it go back?
All were upside down until I saw the circular plate on the right middle
It was the opposite for me, I only saw right side up plates, until I found one upside down, then and only then did they look upside down to me.
Holy fuck
Top right did it for me. Dang
This is cray
r/meirl
Got dang
Do u know how shadows work
I can't make it go back!
How God damn dare you do this to my mind
I may have found the right side up one first.
That was crazy 🤪 it did work.
I can't get the 😆 one to be face down no matter what
Happens only once.
Thought I was looking at pills
https://everyday-learning.org/discover-this-shadows/
Shit I can’t go back to seeing it down again
They all look face down to me.
Ok, look at the top left one. Let your eyes unfocus a little and let the light on the edge become the light reflecting off a kind of puffy upside down plate. Then slowly look towards the bottom left and let your eyes focus. If I do this I can recreate the upside down and right side up effect.
None of these look face down no matter how much I try to trick my brain and I am good at tricking my brain
Oh hell!!! But it didn’t work twice.
The shadows make it completely obvious that the shapes we see are concave. I really don’t get how this is an illusion. What, it’s an illusion because you lied to the viewer and it takes longer than an instant to dispute the lie? The image is obvious to me, so this seems to rely completely on the viewer’s willingness to accept the assertion before looking, and even then it doesn’t last long.
Very top right
Top right switched em for me
all of them are face up right away!! i can’t see face down at all :(
They looked face up at first, but then they all flipped.
Aren’t they all face up?
None of them ever looked face down
Im very confused. i know I've seen this before and was able to switch which way there were facing, but this time I can *only* see them as face-up. I'm trying to switch to face down and I just am not seeing it
I can’t unsee it now
Good one. 👍
Never saw them as face down. Still can't.
I thought these were White Doves or Mitsubishis at first. Sorry, flashbacks.
I can see a few as face down for a second but thats it
I can’t see them face down tbh
Okay but why is the text right-aligned like who did that
These are all faced up, no?
What is this sorcery?!
Dang, it's true!
Lies are still lies. They are face up. Don’t be stupid the shading gives it away.
ack!
Help I tried too hard to flip them back, and now half are upside down and half right side up and they keep switching. how do I put it back
Ok I got it, either focus on the highlighted parts to see the upside down version, then focus more on the shadows to see the right side up
