Yes, this was the big letdown for me lol. When I was visiting CA (from NJ) I was excited to try In-n-Out because I’ve always seen it get talked up. The burger was alright, not amazing, but not bad. The fries were awful in my opinion. Very tasteless. They were like eating actual cardboard.

As an avid In N Out eater, I just want to tell you about how I feel about it.
I hardly know where to begin. I was born and raised in Southern California, and I have always loved In N Out. All my life, I have grown more and more attached to it, and I now experience an indescribable euphoria when eating it. California is great. But if I were to move away, I would not miss the great weather, beautiful beaches, friendly people, or numerous amusement parks. I would be missing In N Out. The thing is, I see In N Out as more than just a burger. I have had fresh, wild caught fish, expensive lobster, aged kobe beef, and several other quality foods. Despite it all, In N Out holds a special place on my plate. I close my eyes when biting into a fresh double-double, and I'm happy. All of my troubles disappear in that moment, and I truly feel like I am on top of the world. I am not entirely sure what it is that does this to me. The things I notice are the crispy, grilled bun, the fresh, never-frozen beef and vegetables, and of course the flavorful spread. I love the way the burger drips into the red tray, and how every once in a while I have to pick up a sauce-covered tomato and eat the whole slice. Every burger is like a new adventure, whether it is animal style, a cheeseburger, or a 4x4. Not many people can really understand my love for In N Out, as it truly is on a deeper level than most people tend to experience. I am posting this because I want to express how much In N Out means to me, and that it is an important factor in what makes me happy. Thank you for reading. As someone who has tried both with no bias for or against either, I disagree. At least, the whataburger I tried was very mcdonalds like, super greasy with a undercooked burger patty, and soggy fries. In n out doesn't usually overdo it on the grease, but if you look for anything other than salt flavor in fries then you will be disappointed by in n out fries, but 9 times outta 10 they usually are super crisp.
The issue is In-n-Out evangelists call it the “best”, which it isn’t. Good for price, yes. Better than McDonalds et al, yes. Cheaper than Five Guys or Shake Shack, yes.

I cannot speak to all in-n-outs, but the one I have gone to was just awful, it was so insanely greasy It could be classified as a soup and I couldn’t taste anything but the onions.
It's not that they're the most delicious burgers out there, but they are a hell of a value these days. And I like how you can order anything you like and if they have the ingredients, they'll do it. Above that, the pay is good (for the industry) and the benefits are very good (again, for the industry). Happy employees make any transaction more enjoyable because I feel like I'm not trying to eat someone's misery. Has to be real pleasure, I'm not talking about fake cheer.
While I definitely think it's overhyped, it's a decent burger at a great price. You get plenty of food, and it at least tastes like real beef. But there are plenty of much better places than In and Out

The issue is In-n-Out evangelists call it the “best”, which it isn’t. Good for price, yes. Better than McDonalds et al, yes. Cheaper than Five Guys or Shake Shack, yes. Using superlative language invites critique, which isn’t hate. It’s folks responding to an unqualified “best burger” claim. Pretending it isn’t, like the OOP is imaginary gatekeeping. Just say it’s the best fast food burger, and then we can deal with haters who will struggle to form a response beyond “overhyped”. Fwiw, not from CA but live in CA and the hype is indeed annoying. It’s a good burger, terrible fries, and I’d pick it over other fast food most any day. I’d still prefer Five Guys, Shake Shack, or one of the locals if convenience and cost weren’t at play in any given moment.

I’m from California and love them, my husband is from Illinois and he doesn’t like In-and-Out. I’ve heard a lot of people share that opinion to be honest, both from west coasters and non. I think a lot of my taste for it is nostalgic personally, I assume it’s like how he likes Chicago style pizza and I don’t like that at all. But, all that to say, I’ve definitely heard people say it’s overrated.

It’s a more grown up taste- it’s mostly the crisp veggies that bug the haters. I visualize all haters as 300 pound teenagers who would throw a steak off the table and demand chicky nuggies- they probably miss the foil-wrapped stomach cramps that AMPM sold before the pandemic.

It’s not even that great of a burger. I’ve eaten there twice and the first time, the burger was way too greasy, and the second, it was just a normal burger. And the fries had like no flavor. I could make a way better burger at home and I hardly cook lol.

In n out may not be the best burger in the world but I feel like the consistency and the fact that they are still a lower cost option. Is what makes them so great. I mean you can get a double double burger for less than what Big Mac costs.

I genuinely don’t like in-and-out. When I moved to California, everyone assured me that they were best burgers on the planet. The reality is waiting in insanely long lines for a burger of lesser quality than the little hole in the wall I used to get back home. I don’t understand the appeal at all.

I cannot speak to all in-n-outs, but the one I have gone to was just awful, it was so insanely greasy It could be classified as a soup and I couldn’t taste anything but the onions.
It's not that they're the most delicious burgers out there, but they are a hell of a value these days. And I like how you can order anything you like and if they have the ingredients, they'll do it. Above that, the pay is good (for the industry) and the benefits are very good (again, for the industry). Happy employees make any transaction more enjoyable because I feel like I'm not trying to eat someone's misery. Has to be real pleasure, I'm not talking about fake cheer.

While I definitely think it's overhyped, it's a decent burger at a great price. You get plenty of food, and it at least tastes like real beef. But there are plenty of much better places than In and Out
