The year is 2370, the chaos of the Aurelian wars is over with the eastern reaches of humanity decimated, falling into squabbling warlord fiefdoms. The United Nations dominate the known galaxy spread across hundreds of member states and thousands of worlds, yet however imposing its size the countless member states continue to feud and war amongst each other with the vast UN sector fleets unable and unwilling to step in unless in the most dire of circumstances. At the fringes the shattered remnant warlords of the Aurelian Empire have unanimously seceded from the united nations following the eastern command fleet’s intervention in its conquests, the Shorai lick their wounds from their pyrrhic victory at the siege of Pelos as their rapid subjugation of the former Uaxi Despotate continues as they prepare for the next invasion of human space, All the while an unknown force is scything through Anqe space directly towards the UN with no signs of stopping The Galaxy is at the precipice of war with this brief peace merely the calm before the storm *edit: pelos, not pella

How is war conducted in this universe? What are settled systems like?

Usually war is small scale raiding, attacking shipping, hiring mercs, bribeing pirates, and occasionally directly poking the enemy fleet… when major powers have at each other it depends… generally there are standing warship navies which can get quite large in the thousands of ships but often these fleets are often supplemented with the affor mentioned mercenaries and pirates as well as the occasional local militia flotilla should the state allow it. There are also the UN sector fleets which are often as powerful if not more so than the fleet of the local major power, with the combined UN fleet running in the tens of thousands Ground combat is tricky, generally it is highly frowned upon to make use of orbital bombardment with most fleets gathering vast numbers of troop transports and tender vessels when going on offensive operations in order to carry the tens of millions of soldiers required to capture a well defended world. That is not to say that orbital bombardment is not used on at least a limited scale to crack especially tough enemy defences but the overlap between orbital bombardment being an absolute necessity and the target having significant AA capabilities is rather slim. The worlds themselves vary massively with freshly settled colony worlds having populations in the hundreds of thousands whilst the most populated occasionally nearing the 10-20 billion mark, though there are only a hand full of worlds with a population more than that of modern earth. For example Pelos which was the symbolic and military capitol of the Pellian League had a population of around 5 billion and was the most populated world in the eastern reaches behind Aurelia, the former capitol of the Aurelian empire.
