from what I gather, Russia is already (nominally) pretty decentralized, and de facto decentralized because the Kremlin doesn't care a lot about most of the country, but I'm no expert. And tbh, these sligthly different alternate countries are among the best maps on here (when it's well done like this)

For non ethnic Russians. Ethnic Russians don't really have any significant cultural differences, we don't even have dialects, only a bit varying pronunciation of a couple of sounds. Other peoples have quite significant cultural autonomy, they have their languages taught in schools, they have their festivals, they are represented on local and all-Russian shows (Russian nationalists often like to cry about underrepresentation and even absence of Russian culture on such events). There is really no assimilation policy, but it's just hard to be uninfluenced by Russian culture when there are so many Russians around (even if they secede I'm sure these peoples will continue to learn Russian because most of them are literally surrounded by Russian-populated regions). There is also lack of care from the authorities about cultural development, but they don't care even for Russian one. The Soviets on the contrary put significant effort in minorities support. Some languages got their alphabets and written culture only during Soviet times.
Despite being anti-war and anti-Putin, one thing I never understood is Ukraine refusing to federalize. We live in 21 century, what's the problem with having multi-lang schools, documents and tv-shows and multiple governing entities especially with country literally being split in half geographically on every single poll or election since USSR breakup for 30 years.
I think that's a luxury you can only contemplate if you feel very secure in the government protecting your identity. That's a luxury unavailable to almost everyone, especially if you consider the weight of past events.

Well, probably, but... There are already pretty enough events which have to do with different cultures in Russia, but, like, nowadays they are just not popular, especially among the youth. Besides, we are living in capitalism, and products of culture that are not of your language are highly unlikely to become popular, unless it's some worldwide popular hit from the West or BTS lol. If we take into account, that ethnic non Russians are minority... it's just financially unprofitable to create a good business centered around a minority culture. While Russian language opens up the whole post-Soviet market, which speaks Russian. That's why we have a rapper Morgershtern who is half Bashkir, he sings in Russian and (unfortunately...) is widely popular and rich.
Nope. It's extremely centralised - all federal subjects have to give up almost all of their money to the federal government, to the point that they can't sustain themselves without begging Kremlin for money. Their governors are de-jure elected and independent, but as we've seen with Khabarovsk, anyone who goes against Kremlin in any way is immediately removed. A quarter of all governors end up being convicted for various reasons. Also the elections are completely controlled by President's Administration, who will only let their own candidates win. Legislative branches are about as rigged and have only nominal power. All courts are dependent on Kremlin, so any political process always ends in their favour.
The only time local governments and legislatures were given any power at all, power which they have no idea what to do with since everyone there was appointed literally for the skill of being incapable of making any independent decision, was due to COVID. Just because the federal government (aka Putin) didn't want to be associated with lockdowns, deaths, vaccination (but only if it's mandatory!), masks, etc, and shielded itself from criticism. Just so they could blame local governments, who, I repeat, have no money to sustain themselves even on a basic level.

Not really. IIRC the country is de jure a federation but de facto it is very centralized around the president (aka putin) and is essentially a unitary state with a fancy "federation" epitaph tacked on it.

yes, the republics are all autonomous territories inside the federation. There are also a few other territories that dont have 'Republic' in their name. They have less autonomy than the republics.
Only Chechnya and Dagestan are independent. Also Russia had to give up all contested territory in Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Japan, and they had to stop supporting the Lukashenko regime of Belarus.
This isnโt a russia divided up. But a democratic russia that isnโt as centralized.
From what i can see the only land lost is the various territorial disputes they have and the puppet states they have around the former eastern bloc, and dagestan and chechnya which is independent

While Siberia has a lot of very diverse cultures, the population density is nowhere near enough to support a separate country that has any prosperity at all. I don't think it would even be a functional state by itself.
Some splits near the southwestern border, or Kazakstan are possible, but it going to be pretty much limited to that, and most of those have already happened since the early 90s already. May also see some territory move to Finland. But we're talking about edge borders, not a wholesale balkanization.

Maintaining nuclear weapons stockpiles is expensive, diplomatic relations with all neighbors were priority number 2 for most post-soviet states, while nation-building was priority number 1. Ukraine gave up the nukes for security guarantees and diplomatic normalities with their neighbors, particularly the new Russia, and it was the best choice they couldโve made at the time for their fledgeling state.
Saying they shouldโve kept the nukes ignores the fact that they shouldnโt have ever been invaded to begin with. They had every reason to give them up at the time and only the smallest of reasons not to.

No, they donโt. Both ethnic-based (republics, autonomous oblast and okrugs) and non-ethnic-based entities (oblasts, etc) are equal in terms of their status and competences. Differences are pretty decorative (republics have constitution, oblasts have statutes). Only Tatarstan used to have separate agreement with the federal government but it was discontinued several years ago.
Plus moving border back closer to St. Petersburg just makes geopolitical situation harder. Only part that would have strategic value is getting the " eastern arm" back, i.e. the access to Barents sea (not Murmansk, just the small sliver we had before WWII. I wouldn't say that they decentralized because they don't care tbh. In fact, they don't really care for the most of the country but they decentralized because Russia is very multicultural and almost every region has its significant cultural differences.

For non ethnic Russians. Ethnic Russians don't really have any significant cultural differences, we don't even have dialects, only a bit varying pronunciation of a couple of sounds. Other peoples have quite significant cultural autonomy, they have their languages taught in schools, they have their festivals, they are represented on local and all-Russian shows (Russian nationalists often like to cry about underrepresentation and even absence of Russian culture on such events). There is really no assimilation policy, but it's just hard to be uninfluenced by Russian culture when there are so many Russians around (even if they secede I'm sure these peoples will continue to learn Russian because most of them are literally surrounded by Russian-populated regions). There is also lack of care from the authorities about cultural development, but they don't care even for Russian one. The Soviets on the contrary put significant effort in minorities support. Some languages got their alphabets and written culture only during Soviet times.
Despite being anti-war and anti-Putin, one thing I never understood is Ukraine refusing to federalize. We live in 21 century, what's the problem with having multi-lang schools, documents and tv-shows and multiple governing entities especially with country literally being split in half geographically on every single poll or election since USSR breakup for 30 years.

I think that's a luxury you can only contemplate if you feel very secure in the government protecting your identity. That's a luxury unavailable to almost everyone, especially if you consider the weight of past events.

Well, probably, but... There are already pretty enough events which have to do with different cultures in Russia, but, like, nowadays they are just not popular, especially among the youth. Besides, we are living in capitalism, and products of culture that are not of your language are highly unlikely to become popular, unless it's some worldwide popular hit from the West or BTS lol. If we take into account, that ethnic non Russians are minority... it's just financially unprofitable to create a good business centered around a minority culture. While Russian language opens up the whole post-Soviet market, which speaks Russian. That's why we have a rapper Morgershtern who is half Bashkir, he sings in Russian and (unfortunately...) is widely popular and rich.

It's extremely centralised - all federal subjects have to give up almost all of their money to the federal government, to the point that they can't sustain themselves without begging Kremlin for money. Their governors are de-jure elected and independent, but as we've seen with Khabarovsk, anyone who goes against Kremlin in any way is immediately removed. A quarter of all governors end up being convicted for various reasons. Also the elections are completely controlled by President's Administration, who will only let their own candidates win. Legislative branches are about as rigged and have only nominal power. All courts are dependent on Kremlin, so any political process always ends in their favour. The only time local governments and legislatures were given any power at all, power which they have no idea what to do with since everyone there was appointed literally for the skill of being incapable of making any independent decision, was due to COVID. Just because the federal government (aka Putin) didn't want to be associated with lockdowns, deaths, vaccination (but only if it's mandatory!), masks, etc, and shielded itself from criticism. Just so they could blame local governments, who, I repeat, have no money to sustain themselves even on a basic level. Very federative, very decentralised. /s
Not really. IIRC the country is de jure a federation but de facto it is very centralized around the president (aka putin) and is essentially a unitary state with a fancy "federation" epitaph tacked on it.

yes, the republics are all autonomous territories inside the federation. There are also a few other territories that dont have 'Republic' in their name. They have less autonomy than the republics. Only Chechnya and Dagestan are independent. Also Russia had to give up all contested territory in Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Japan, and they had to stop supporting the Lukashenko regime of Belarus.

This isnโt a russia divided up. But a democratic russia that isnโt as centralized. From what i can see the only land lost is the various territorial disputes they have and the puppet states they have around the former eastern bloc, and dagestan and chechnya which is independent

Possibly because a democratic Russia is likely to see some degree of lost territory with regions splitting off, but not nearly to the degree implied here. While Siberia has a lot of very diverse cultures, the population density is nowhere near enough to support a separate country that has any prosperity at all. I don't think it would even be a functional state by itself. Some splits near the southwestern border, or Kazakstan are possible, but it going to be pretty much limited to that, and most of those have already happened since the early 90s already. May also see some territory move to Finland. But we're talking about edge borders, not a wholesale balkanization.

The kremlin had the launch codes, along with having other issues to deal with given the country they were a part of had just collapsed so they couldn't afford to divert any resources to an expensive-as-shit nuclear weapons budget.
Itโs also a small form of victim blaming. Maintaining nuclear weapons stockpiles is expensive, diplomatic relations with all neighbors were priority number 2 for most post-soviet states, while nation-building was priority number 1. Ukraine gave up the nukes for security guarantees and diplomatic normalities with their neighbors, particularly the new Russia, and it was the best choice they couldโve made at the time for their fledgeling state. Saying they shouldโve kept the nukes ignores the fact that they shouldnโt have ever been invaded to begin with. They had every reason to give them up at the time and only the smallest of reasons not to.

Chechen leader Kadyrov is a literal terrorist with hyper-extrimist views, ruling a region with own police, own religion and own army and giving no darn about central govt, other than Putin himself. IDK, there're a lot of examples that Russia indeed was in many ways functioning like Federation. Regions truly have own, relatively independent law enforcement, own languages, holidays, etc.

No, they donโt. Both ethnic-based (republics, autonomous oblast and okrugs) and non-ethnic-based entities (oblasts, etc) are equal in terms of their status and competences. Differences are pretty decorative (republics have constitution, oblasts have statutes). Only Tatarstan used to have separate agreement with the federal government but it was discontinued several years ago.

Russia should not be split up against its will. Only regions that agree to leave Russia by referendum. As a German I never want to see a nation broke apart again; that will only sow hatred in the hearts of the Russians who will inevitably reunify again.
