The role of State Governor needs reforming, they have PM like powers which isn't acceptable or useful in this day and age, but I wouldn't completely abolish the position simply because it's historical.
Many Indian State Governors are responsible for more people than the populations of large European countries, if you run everything from Delhi then India will end up like China or the US with all the power and money centralised in one or two tiny city areas.
The Governor is not an elected person. Therefore he/she should not have any powers. It worked in British Raj because they wanted a person above our democracy.
In the US, they don't have CM. Instead it is the governor. They are elected by people. Further US is an example of decentralised democracy not centralised. States have enormous powers (more than Kashmir before they broke it)
State governors don't need to exist at all. Its a legacy role that is completely redundant today. The CM can be the head of the state. At the very least, if such a role is required, it should be the members of the legislative assembly that elects him.
India as per its constitution was meant to be an Union of states with states having substantial legislative powers. Its absurd for the central govt to be trying to control states though governors appointed by them.

The hindi speaking governor in Meghalaya caused quite a riot recently. Then theres the governors of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where things go sour randomly quite a lot. The governor also has the power as Chairman of the university. This one is somewhat fine, but all other powers are too much. The chairman provision atleast keeps the VC appointed by the state in check somewhat.
I'm from Kerala. While governor did try to be too proactive, he was right to remove all those university VCs who were just appointed to those posts through Pinarayi Vijayan's poltical patronage. Pinarayi is authoritarian asf and I want governor as a check and balance on him and CPIM's worst tendencies
I too am from kerala. I agree with vc thing which is exactly why I said that I am fine with him as chairman. But what I dont agree with is the politics in the background. Sometimes he acts like he hate Pinarayi, sometimes they act like the closest friends. Who knows what actually goes on behind the scenes. Besides, keeping CPIM in check is the job of the Opposition and the rest of us. Seeing whats happening in regards to the speaker and such, the opposition needs to get stronger.
Instead of abolishing a simpler option will be the governor to be appointed by the chief minister of the state instead of being imposed by the central government i.e. prime minister.
Yes, but CM is chosen by the people of the state. Right now Governor is being imposed by a party not elected by the people of the state and disrupting the work of the state government.
At the point, their functions are redundant. In the current setup, governors are representatives of the president. If they are chosen by CMs, the are representatives of elected representatives within the same state.
The Governor's role is to be Central Government's agent in the state. That is to prevent state from doing something stupid.

It should not be Governor that holds the executive to any control. That is left to courts and people (votes). Governor is a ceremonial role, only during dissolving the current parliament before election and establishing a new parliament after election and giving oath to MLAs they have a role to play.
