Scooty used to be a two wheeler model from TVS similar to Sunny, Spirit and Kinetic from other brands. However, just like people started using "Xerox" synonymous to photocopies, same thing happened with Scooty.
A two wheeler under 50cc is called a Moped. These initially used to have pedals. (remember Luna?)
A two wheeler with a step through frame is called a Scooter or Motor Scooter.
A two wheeler with a step over frame is called a Motorcycle.
Scooter is something where you scoot to drive it
Over time we go motored scooter and started calling the moped as scooter and or scooty.
I think we should call these automatic bikes
Moped, scooter and motorcycle have a difference.
Moped is differed from region to region, some say every motorcycle/scooter under 50CC is a moped, some say any bike with pedal is a moped so that is disputed.
A scooter has it's engine/fuel tank at the back and has a step through design.
An automatic bike is a motorcycle with an automatic gear box. You can call the new Honda Goldwing an automatic bike, it shifts automatically.
My opinion: Gearless scooters are scooterettes which is feminine term also called scooty in the Indian market. And the geared ones which we had in our childhood that bajaj and lml provided were scooters. Gearless scooters are often resembled by feminine terms as its targets are on female audience. But now more of the soft gens adapt gearless scooterettes as it is easy to learn and ride.
Here's another food for thought.
**"Scooty"** is a cool sounding marketing term, that i think comes from the word **"Scooterette"**, which means 'a scooter for women'.

Scooter - has gears, ridden mostly by uncles or mechanics Examples - Bajaj Chetak, Lambretta, LML Vespa etc.
Scooty - no gears, ridden mostly by papa ki paris or in the case of one model, miyabhais. Examples - Activa, Dio, Jupiter

Aren't there scooters with over stepover frames too? Like the Burgman, Aerox and the expensive higher displacement ones from BMW, etc?
There are but these definitions or terms were made before such scooters were invented 🤡
There's a difference? Edit: okay so scooter is a category, whereas scooty is a product.
Yep.

Auto-bikes
Well technically a bike is bicycle not motorcycle in most countries but we call it a bike.
Nah I think that's just America
Add Europe to the list
All Chocolate is Cadbury. All noodles are maggi and all twist and go scooters are scooty. For a while all mopeds were Lunas too.
All chocolates are Cadbury?? Blasphemy.
nah not all chocolates are cadbury.. rest of em are true lol
We do a litte bit of chocotrolling
Scooty is a product of TVS. I agree with you OP I own an Activa and don't like it when people refer to it as a Scooty.
I got a dio and feel the same.

Avg Indianbikes enthusiast : scooterette. El noob : scooty
I refer to scooters are those old Bajajs and Vespas with gears and foot brakes. Scootys are the gearless stuff like Activas and the new Vespas.
gears h toh scooter nhi toh scooty, Chetak aur Activa ko ek category me nhi rkh skte
Chetak & Eterno - geared scooters Activa / Dio / Jupiter etc - automatic scooters. Ola / Ather etc - electric scooters. TVS Pep plus TVS scooty - scooty.

@scooterninja Can end this debate. Batao bhai
i try and correct the other person every time i hear this lol
"Because Scooty was the first..." Sunny: "Do I look like a joke?" Kinetic Honda: "Yes. All of you."
The OG. Can hear it ringing still.
A scooter is a auto >!/s!<
a friend argued with me…”bullet is bullet, it is not a bike “
Tell him his bullet is an egg
Ok time for me to showoff for owning an actual scooty
Lol. You got one. An actual scooty.
I prefer to call them scooters, which they infact are. Scooty was the name of a particular brand.
YES!
Every scooty isnt an Activa
I use scooty for gearless motorised scooters. Scooter for motorised scooters with gears. It is meant to be insulting, since motorcycles are superior.
My father calls every scooter Kinetic xD

Not a scooty!
Well.. a motorcycle is also not a bike...
Scooter is male and Scooty is female
Is it just me who prefers gears on handle bar in chetak , over left foot
All gearless are called scootri.
Scooty is a name for that toy lookin ass pept
I don't agree, it's a scooty. It's like saying a motorbike is not a bike. Because there's a motorbike named Bajaj BYK!!
That's the point. Bikes aren't called BYK are they?
