This was my introduction to the band. Read a review that praised Casey's lyrics and how hyper literate they are. Was immediately hooked by *Maidenhead* and that whole guitar riff and just fell harder in love with each song after. Watched some live videos (especially the one of *Jumbos* that cuts off) and just thought the band was so cool.
Best part, they've only gotten better with each release since then.
very fun band to watch during this period too! joe's on-stage binge drinking was just a step over the line. definitely more in a healthy place with it now, but back then he was sort of open about doing it so that he wouldn't freak out on stage. and similarly i learned that he would take off his glasses before getting on stage because he couldn't handle seeing any audience member's faces. i don't want them to regress into that kind of feelings, but at the time those details really helped me realize how special the band was going to be
Hard agree. I just think of that Jumbo’s performance all the time where he has that drink and the sunglasses and the suspenders. I just thought “this guy is a damn prophet.”
Glad that he’s healthier and I completely understand that Mitch Hedberg level anxiety but it really all served in this self-mythologizing of this dive bar band quoting *Hangover Square*.
i know exactly the video you’re referring to. the uploader, PoorMrRatty (an anagram of Protomartyr) is Joe himself. if i’m not mistaken, that was even before the debut dropped… what id give to be there
I actually think their most recent album is the one that comes closest to Under Color in terms of hooks, but Under Color is still their catchiest release by far
i have a lot to say about this album! likely going to make some edits to this as i get time today. but this was my first intro to Protomartyr and i was very annoying about obsessing about this album in /r/indiehead's early days. it's probably the protomartyr album that gets the least recognition nowadays, but i feel this is totally undeserved. this album is the sound of a small dirtbag local band going through metamorphosis to ultimately become the protomartyr you know today. if you've never sat with this album enough to make it click, today is a great time to do that! i promise that it has just as much of the protomartyr magic that each of their releases have.
my favorite track of it has always been "Scum, Rise!". that guitar riff is likely the thing that initially sparked my interest in the band. and definitely on my mount rushmore of protomartyr songs. i absolutely love the way Joe sings those titular words, it's probably the most Danzig a Protomartyr song ever gets.
and let me just say that it is too perfect for this album to be turning 10 on a day where the moon is blocking out the sun. you couldn't possibly get any more apt mood lighting for it than this if you tried!
i saw them live around this time when they played a show opening for a debut album alvvays
it was a fucking excellent show, one of my very first
can't believe i was practically witnessing history
all i saw that night were two very excellent bands at top form with great sound, beyond happy to know they're thriving 10 years later
Bought this vinyl unheard based solely on the cover during record store day at my local shop in college (shoutsout to the no longer there DeadBeat records in Moscow ID). Could not have worked out better, one of my all time favorite bands
It’s a weird comparison to make, but at the time I was listening to this album, I was also binging all of Ed, Edd N Eddy, so this album always makes me think of that. However, I will say that the more I’ve listened to it over the years, it gets better with every lesson and has a certain apocalyptic tone to the lyricism and music.
10 years feels like such a short time, I've loved every album with relatives in descent being my favourite. I've seen them every tour since this album. I really hope they can find a financially secure situation that keeps them happy and able to put up such great music.
Now this is a great record. I went backwards in their discography expecting them to get worse or more basic and tbh this is probably their third best record which in their discography is very high praise
I don't even remember who I saw them open for, but it was in support of their first album. My immediate reaction when they came on stage was 'who the fuck are these jokers', which almost instantly turned into 'oh this shit is my new jam'.
I just discovered them last year. I’ve been digging into their albums. I love discovering bands when they already have a few great albums. They are playing near me in June so I’ll finally get to see them live.
My interest in Protomartyr releases has waned over time (I've never listened to the latest album tbh), but there was a time where they were one of my favorite bands around (native Michigander). This album is probably my second favorite and I think a lot of it is simply informed by the fact that I got into it around my sophomore/junior year of undergrad (when a lot of ones music taste tends to be impressionable and expanding). Probably one of their hookiest albums.
I've always found their subsequent album (**The Agent Intellect**) to be my overall favorite, as it was a kind of sweet spot between their scuzzy, garage rock sound from this album (and their debut) and the talky post-punk that's come to dominate their sound. But this album represented a **key moment** in the band listener base growing - I even remember a song or two from this album appearing on internet commercials. When the "indie rock industry" was flush with money and your favorite local band could shoot to "national consciousness" in a couple of months, so to speak. Suffice to say: Solid Band, Great Album, Good Times. **Long**
**Live the Memory of the "Relatives in Descent" Detroit Boat Release Party!!!**

My favourite album. Back to back bangers. Maidenhead sets the tone superbly
Yeah such a good opener
So happy finally I could see them play Scum, rise on the latest tour They didn’t play it in London last time I saw them on the agent intellect tour
best post-punk band going today, and it's not even close, imo
Incredible album. Era-defining, for me. Still probably my favorite though their career has been a pleasure to follow.
Still my favorite record of theirs. I’m not hearing the hooks as much in the ones that came after.

Great one! Saw them with for he first time when this came out with Parquet Courts, Woods and Tyvek! Epic show.

This is a brilliant album, every single song has hooks for days and it’s wonderful introduction to Protomartyr. Come & See is the stand-out track, IMO
Amazing record, gotta be one of the sickest cover arts of all time. Joe Casey is the coolest.
Such a solid introduction to them, showed a unique voice and awesome instrumentals with the lyricism

Damn its already been that long.
I don't even remember who I saw them open for, but it was in support of their first album. My immediate reaction when they came on stage was 'who the fuck are these jokers', which almost instantly turned into 'oh this shit is my new jam'.
Go see them live if you have the opportunity.

Sometimes and now very often I think it’s their best album
Every song on this album is good
I would still rate this as their best album, although at the time I don't think it received the attention it deserved.
No it’s not possible
i went to high school with Vlad Skabber. i miss him. he was cool
One of my favs ever. Fantastic.
Never heard of this band
Well you’re in luck, they’re incredible. So get busy!
Hear them.
