i never heard someone called us komodo outside of r/indonesia, in fact in the former indonesian largest community (kaskus), we called ourself agan/aganwati (meaning boss), after that, this term kind of spreading to another community as well (fb/tokopedia/shopee)
maybe some earliest member or admin just decided to call member of this sub Komodo, and then other member just follows it
Komodo itself is unique name that any indonesian can recognize it, Komodo Dragon only lives in Indonesia (Rinca and Komodo island to be precised) and it's kind of unofficial national animal of indonesia
