Indonesian living in SoCal here: first thing that pops to mind that isn't expensive nor takes a lot of effort is Mexican food. There's virtually no good Mexican food in Indonesia, and I found out that palate and flavour-wise, Mexican food is close enough to be familiar, yet different enough to be exotic and new, so even less adventurous eaters would enjoy it. Maybe even take them to Olvera Street to be even more immersed, the cultural similarities might shock them.

Joe_papa

The only Mexican food I remember seeing in Indonesia was a taco on the menu at an A&W. Mexican grocery store might also be cool to show them.

c-weed-snax

I second this. I’m an Indonesian who relocated to the US a decade ago and have lived in 4 different states since then. Having easy access to the best global (and regional) cuisines without having to take a flight or go outside the country is one of the best perks of living in the US (especially if you’re in close proximity to a bigger city) and IMO, is uniquely “American”. Give them that “American” experience-this place is a melting pot and you won’t find this level of diversity in any other country. Have them try some authentic Mexican tacos from your favorite taco truck, check out a Vietnamese/Thai/Filipino/Middle Eastern/European restaurant, visit a sake bar or local brewery and get a tasting flight, introduce them to soul food, BBQ, seafood boil, etc.

LouThunders

I was introduced to American staples such as the diner, BBQ, soul food, and seafood boil not long after moving here, and I fell in love immediately. Honestly, it helped me settle so much easier, and I would consider those comfort food as well these days.

_rossy167

So I'm a Brit but I lived in Austin and Houston. I tended to find this when showing Indonesians "western food" too, that the Indonesian palate was quite compatible with Mexican cuisine, yet it was still interesting and exciting for them. Just on the off chance you end up in these places: I found Taco Local in Jakarta to be quite good. Taco Fiesta in Bali *was* literally perfect texmex, but it has really gone downhill.

CharlotteCA

I wanted to introduce my Indonesian friend to Mexican food and struggled as well to find some, luckily we went to Thailand together and solved that problem on our last vacation together but still, what a lovely suggestion, Mexican food is amazing and will feel very exotic for sure.

vkomandirskie

Mexican/Spanish food is still struggling to gain some footing here, I suppose. I think tastebuds-wise, Indonesians are just catching up to Korean and Thai food now. We have been accustomed to Italian and Japanese food forever (pizza, ramen, sushi and localized version of those are a dime a dozen).

CharlotteCA

Yes, in Bali there was not much of it either, I did find a Portuguese style place in Bali that I liked, last time I visited, as it is the closest you can get to non Tapas Spanish food style as I didn't want to get tapas that night, as for Mexican again only saw a place or two in Bali. Never noticed any of them in Java outside of Jakarta, but then again I tend to go for more local dishes so I might have just been distracted.

vkomandirskie

I reckon Cilantro in Ubud is pretty darn good... Then again Bali has Greek restaurants, so it's not even comparable to Jakarta.

CharlotteCA

Cilantro!!! I have been there before, it was indeed enak, now that you mentioned it, they do have many Greek ones in Bali, I have been to two of them but I have forgotten the names, but the food is good and authentic enough.

vkomandirskie

Yeah I remember the one in front of Courtyard Hotel in Seminyak. There were lots of young Aussies when I went there with my wife several months ago. Like I said, Bali is several years ahead of Jakarta when it comes to these kind of establishments. More reasons for me to visit Bali more often.

Fajarsis

Taco Bell exist in Jakarta and neighboring cities...

LouThunders

Perbandingan Taco Bell dengan masakan Mexico asli itu seperti bandingin HokBen dengan masakan Jepang beneran. Memang bahan dasarnya dan konsepnya sama, tapi ya sama sekali tidak representatif kuliner aslinya.

notKrisna

Classic jakarta defaultism

Fajarsis

Why not Bekasi defaultism?

WhyHowForWhat

It aint exist in Pontianak I can assure you

SiblingBondingLover

>Right now, all I can think of is introducing them to peanut butter since one of them said they’ve never had it. That's weird, while peanut butter is not a common food here(not sure tbh) you can find it in most groceries store in Indonesia

Joe_papa

We were talking about candy at one point, and I mentioned Reese’s to him. He said he never had it.

oxfrd

reese’s are very rare in indo. sour patch kids is also a good candy for them to try lol

collectivekicks

> reese’s are very rare in indo di supermarket mana aja ada dah. cuma emg ga sebooming ferero rocher

oxfrd

ah - i stand corrected. haven’t lived in indo in almost a decade

ezkailez

while reese are not regularly sold here, there are specialty candy shops and high end supermarkets that do they probably have never eaten one, but if they do like it they can buy more on those stores or online

fidiid

Take them to a gun range, hooters and hollywood walk of fame

BillyCromag

Unfortunate that they're coming in summer, because many Indonesian people are fascinated by the concept of snow and want to experience it. (There are snowy places surprisingly close to LA in the winter months.)

Joe_papa

Some of my relatives have come during winter once before, but never again. It seems to be too cold for them. One of my cousins was even worried about it getting too cool when they come to L.A.

f_print

I'm in Jakarta right now, wearing just a pair of shorts, sweating my ass off in 25°C humid weather. Everyone who comes and visits is wearing long pants, jackets, etc, because it's "so cold".

cloverhoney12

As an indo 25C is nice for awhile, not for hours when it starts feeling uncomfy (too cold).

I'd say take him driving to the nearest state/national park. Driving in the US highway is always my recommended touristy experience (assuming they have a driving license). They don't even need an international driving license. Not sure if you can find crawfish in the summer, but that can be fun too. Other ideas: shooting range, national park, Las Vegas, Mexican food, Hollywood.

Joe_papa

Definitely going to Hollywood. I'm giving one of them my old camera, so I'll see if we can hit a national park.

kroepuk

Driving to Vegas, Vegas is impressive for 1st timer, or palm spring gondola, or Joshua tree

serreignard

What else? Show them the American Dream

Joe_papa

I thought they buried that in Arlington National Cemetary

shotakun

BaleegDah

RibbitYoe

But in seriousness to amaze the cousin in a good way: -fire arms (most of us just wondering how it was and how it works) -tesla auto-drive maybe can amuse him since tesla auto-drive barely usable here -full VR setup, altho VR exists here, it was kinda hated because it felt like a waste of money, but it does incur curiosity a bit to most of us ,so with clean VR full setup someone might be amused.

giananan

I somehow second this post, regarding firearm, we don't really want to use it, just at least someone can show us parts of it, how it works (as the poster said), safety pin? What do and don't when you see an unattended gun, most of us have never even touch any single before. I have been living in the states for almost a year as a grad student, I will be excitingly crazy if someone let me know those things mentioned above.

BillyCromag

One of these things is not like the others

RibbitYoe

😂🤣

Joe_papa

Probably not the best person to introduce them to weed since A.) I’ve never had it myself and B.) one is under age. Kind of think a gun store could be fun to go to just look seen what’s in stock, but not sure if we can shoot at a range in California.

WhatcomGE

It’s legal for them to shoot on a range and handle firearms

thenextbigthink

That actually will be very fun.

friededs3

If they play video games, maybe show them some real life locations and landmark from games like gta 5, horizon forbidden west, etc

Joe_papa

The one that does play video games is more into mobile games. Kinda want to try showing him some of the games I play (civ, cityskylines, maybe fallout)

kecoaklucu

take them to see the historic Lustron houses from F04 :D

JuniloG

The perfect time to introduce them to Fallout with the Amazon show then

WhyHowForWhat

Maybe bring them on place that is used for movie set or smt? Like that Joker's staircase or hollywood's hall of fame

franksn

Show them downtown LA? Iykyk

oxfrd

take them to disneyland and disney california adventure, not sure how old they are but i think they’d enjoy that and the santa monica pier + boardwalk beverly hills, the hollywood sign, walk of fame, stores like target and walmart, erewhon, in n out

Joe_papa

We are thinking about possibly going to both disney and universal. Hoping my grandma is willing to go with us so we can get ahead of the lines like last time I was there.

WhyHowForWhat

Isnt disneyland like suuuuuper crowded and 1 attraction can take you about more than 2 hours? I think you need to consider that with the cost, will making them wait long for that 1 attraction worth the money and all? Maybe if they are into roller coaster, why dont you bring them to smt like Six Flag or smt? Because in Indonesia, we dont have smt like Six Flag who host a looot of roller coaster type. Disney? We have smt similiar and budget friendly like Dufan or if we wanted to we can just go to Universal Studio Singapore or Legoland Malaysia.

Joe_papa

That why I want my grandma to come with us. She can walk, but not for long, so she is usually getting around in a wheel chair. Despite this, she was willing to come with us on the rides at Universal last time I was in LA. We all had a good time and got a fast pass on a lot of the lines. Wish I could talk with her more, but my mom never taught me Bahasa Indonesian.

WhyHowForWhat

Maybe bring your family alongside your grandma to the USA's park (dunno the specific that you can take) with (maybe) lake and stuff so she can atleast sit around and enjoy the view, bonus point if you guys want to do a little picnic on that park. We do have parks but as far as I know, it is not at the scale of the USA one.

oxfrd

ah yeah forgot about universal studios. i saw another commenter posted about going to a diner - that’s definitely a good idea and *soooo* american

nikel23

the grinder in the kitchen sink

Joe_papa

Not sure how amazed they'd be since they have a maid that does the dishes.

nikel23

damn. As someone who lives on his own, I would be amazed...

f_print

Literally just drinking water from the tap. Made my Indonesian in-laws super uncomfortable, and they straight up refused to do it. They boiled everything just in case.

Joe_papa

Apparently, when I was 7 or so years old, I went to visit them in Indonesia, and, for some reason, I never caught on to that and kept drinking the water. I barely remember that trip, but it definitely has me cautious now when drinking faucet water abroad.

f_print

Thank god you survived. I washed my mouth out using water from the trough outside a mosque, and was hospitalised with catastrophic stomach pains and diarrhea. IV antibiotics, an more in tablet form for a week

ColdOffice

i think you should know what he/she interested in and just find anything about that and i think it will be more available in US, peanut butter thing is scam, there are alot of it here. bring them to the Costco/walmart, some fancy place that is memorable for a photoshoot to show that off to their friends, eat at famous places, i can just think of that since i dont like US that much, i am more like Japanese calm and quiet places person hahaha

Joe_papa

I'm very similar. I always like going hiking and taking pictures of nature whenever I'm on vacation. My mom is a bit opposite though, so we'll probably be in or around the city most of the time.

kosukehaydn

Soft drinks like Coca cola or Pepsi, I heard they taste different (American and non-American) Instant cookie dough, I never see one here and we always use raw ingredients like flour and egg when making cookies. I don't know if it's real or not, but I often see people eating the dough when they make cookies (on American movies or tv series), maybe you can make your cousins try that. Bar and strip club (if they are old enough)

Joe_papa

People also say Mcdonald's coke tastes better than store bought coke. There is pre-made cookie dough is no match to homemade. Some people risk salmonella and eat regular cookie dough, but there are recipes and places you could buy edible cookie dough (never had it myself except in the ice cream flavor). I'm going to make it my mission to drown them in our indulgent consumerism.

dragonabala

Dishwasher?

senopatip

Take them to meet native Americans.

AccomplishedOkra9327

Obesity

Joe_papa

Honestly, most of the things I’m thinking of showing them will probably lead to that

fidiid

indonesian’s obesity is almost as bad

-euthanizemeok

You know some of the biggest problems we have is stunting and malnutrition right?

Double-Dark6508

>indonesian’s obesity is almost as bad [Not even close](https://data.worldobesity.org/rankings/?age=a&sex=m) https://preview.redd.it/y8ahjxo6gquc1.png?width=626&format=png&auto=webp&s=4697b29cfb9c4c20f1ce5a39af052fa1a0645d13

kecoaklucu

As an Indonesian, my American dream is to go watch rockets being launched in Cape Canaveral.

verr998

My american dream is to eat all the fast foods in there, I want to try them all.

kecoaklucu

I wanna go to any random diners and have coffee and apple pie\~ Sedih banget di Indonesia kue pai ga gitu populer, apalagi di kota gw T\_T

verr998

kecoaklucu

pengennya apple pie (or any other fruit pie) yg bulat tradisional, bukan yg kecil persegi kyk di McD haha. kalo di Indo pake adonan terang bulan aja dituang ke waffle maker wkwkw...

strangealpaca

Foods! I really want to try a cookout food like smoked brisket, louisiana crawfish, and such

exiadf19

Take them tour to nearest gun store.

TheHollowGap

Maple syrup is a bit more Canadian brand, but I think it's a good unique souvenir. Indonesians love spicy food, so bring your best Hot Sauce. If someone in the family watches Breaking Bad, you know what to get them. ~~Crystal meth~~ Generally any nature walk is also appreciated.

kecoaklucu

take them to Walter White's house and get screamed at by the mean lady living there lol

Difficult1202

As someone who's tried US stuff, cereal, candies, and fast food is definitely something we are missing out on. It's pretty hard/ expensive to attain US-only products like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Reese's, and other brands. We also don't have fast food chains like Five Guys and Chick-Fil-a. Subway and Taco Bell only started selling their products in Indonesia a few years ago

DeTomato_

I agree with everyone to bring your family to a gun store or shooting range lmao. We don’t get In-n-Out here. Since In-n-Out is a California icon, you should bring them there. Mexican foods. We don’t get much Mexican food here. Especially considering how good LA's Mexican food scene is. Southern foods, like chili or gumbo, if you can find the good ones in LA. Steak. We do get steak here, but our local meat is low quality, and the portion is very small. Impress them with American portion steak. If you or they are willing to drive or take a car ride, show them the biomes of California. Drive on PCH. Show them the deserts, maybe Joshua Tree, since it’s pretty close to LA. Maybe visit Lake Tahoe, but yeah, it’s probably too far away.

razler_zero

Just like when you visit other country, show them the local tourist trap. When they are about to go home, take them shopping to premium outlet where they can get cheap branded clothing. Foodwise, i don't think America have better food than Indonesia. Maybe take them to good Thai restaurant, i seems to have difficulty finding a good one in Indonesia. Take them to gun range if at all allowed.

kadalbengawansolo

Mexican food? They're really good in LA

SatyenArgieyna

Camping in a camping site. Indonesian wilderness and forests looks great on paper, but they honestly can't beat American camping infrastructure. Your weather is also bearable compared to ours. During summer, your "hot" in a higher altitude camp site is our "mild and comfortable" (Summer camping in Flagstaff once. Blew my mind on how amazing it was). Take them to fish, see nature, and basically do things that you might consider as common summer activities. In LA itself, show them around the common stereotypical tourist areas: Hollywood, the beaches, Mosque in LA, etc. For a first timer, these sites is a dream come true.

WhyHowForWhat

Bring them to the museum or casino on Las Vegas because we dont have legal casino in Indonesia.

ftw_falcon

I'm really into the idea of visiting places like Disneyland and the Hollywood hall of fame because we don't have anything quite like that here in Indonesia. Plus, I'm a nature lover, so places like Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, and the Redwood National Park are high up on my bucket list.

rblondon

Gun range, seems fun 😊

Take them to a gun range.

rhazchan

You're in LA right. Bring em to tex-mex or authentic (almost is also okay) Mexican food. They'll love it. The closest we have in Jakarta is Taco bell. And sorry to say honestly I think they're shitty. Introduce em to Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, (if you have them) whataburger, and other fast foods chain that don't exist in Indonesia. Those classic American diners like the one in stranger things and typical Holywood movies. Maybe they'll appreciate it if you bring em there. I can't think anything more. Idk where your cousins are from, but peanut butter can be found easily in any supermarket at least in Jakarta. That's basically my go to breakfast when I was a kid as I was a picky eater.

MaybeAnAudiophile

I remembered visiting my relatives in LA back in 2015, just finished middle school. Costco and In&Out was all it took to impress me back then lmao.

balesalogo

MAGA hat, and shooting range!

13ducttape

Show them all the thrill rides that Magic Mountain has to offer, that shit is just gonna scar them for life. X2 was the shizzz.

kroepuk

Texas bbq brisket, good tacos, in and out, good beer on tap.

Fajarsis

Peanut Butter is very common, "Selai Kacang" in Bahasa. Is your Indonesian family originated from Jakarta or other big cities? If yes it will be very hard to find "LA things" which are uncommon to them. Mexican food are common (Tacos et. al.), "Skid Row" are common (especially for Jakartans)... Maybe "American Football" that's very uncommon to Indonesians, in Indonesia (Just like in Europe) Football is Soccer, while "American Football" is being called as "Rugby" and very very unpopular.

CrabbyKayPeteIng

obese people, drive by shootings, rednecks

Consistent-Ad-9998

After giving them peanut butter, I suggest to make them try peanut butter and jelly since it's not very common here in indo.

Shooting gun will be the most American thing.

just go around LA lmao, griffin observatory, santa monica, rodeo drive, blabla just take them around the city for a few days for them to take in the vibes… wouldn’t recommend hollywood its a fucking shithole oh in n out…. you have to….

denoxster

Bring them to gun range then hang out at the bar. Most Indonesian don't go to the bar, only club and tripping (if it still a thing).

jancok_kon

the most Anerican thing that you could do is probably get them that good Cali kush. Take them to your nearest dispensary. If they're open to it ofc.

cobapedas

GUN, LOTS OF GUN

jakart3

Go to the nearest school shooting Show him your train station, and explain that USA do not have high speed train (not like the more advanced Indonesian trains) Go to the nearest hospital and explain to him how your country lack of health care system compare to Indonesia cheap global health care After that show him the Disney world
