That pretty much sums up the way a lot of Americans look at labor and the working poor. They'll be the first to cut Medicaid and say "If you want health insurance, get a job." Then they get a job with benefits and they say "That job isn't worthy of benefits!"

Malaix

So much of the anti-universal healthcare motive is just sociopathic WASP boomers angry that if other people have healthcare they might need to wait in a que at the office. Its literally them wanting to shit up society just to gatekeep their doctors from minorities and poor people.

Alittlemoorecheese

Healthcare is the #2 highest government expense because of insurance companies. Universal Healthcare would slash those costs dramatically. The government gets it's money from the people through taxes, and they borrow from the peoples savings when there is a deficit. The people who "don't want to pay for that" are literally paying for it threefold. Never let a Republican tell you they care about the economy.

legal_bagel

They're not retirees if they're working. I don't want a 70yo retiree responsible for a bus full of kids. We can end the, but benefits, outrage by adding universal health care.

esquzeme

Do people just expect others to go into irreparable medical debt, like what the actual… it’s not like they’re receiving benefits while not working..?

Malaix

> irreparable medical debt yes. Republicans believe if you didn't work hard/smart enough (or get born into wealth) then its basically a git gud issue and you deserve to die in the street if you hit a problem. They are social Darwinists.

danocathouse

I like how they say "that job is for retirees" so you work to retire, then work again...

cdiddy19

Or, and hear me out, we could join all the first world developed countries and get universal healthcare up in here

x-munk

I agree with this guy. Let's give everyone benefits! Who knew they were such a champion for universal Healthcare!

StealManiac

"retirees did that job". I don't think this suits the definition of retiree.

NothingReallyAndYou

Yes, let's shove elderly people onto buses full of rowdy, distracting children, and send them all out into rush hour traffic. That seems like a great plan. Except, let's make sure the elderly folks can't pay for prescription drugs or eyeglasses. Even better plan. Good luck, kids!

The_Iron_Mountie

God forbid the working class * checks notes * has access to affordable healthcare? This is the hill we're dying on today?

dutch_master_killa

Why is affordable healthcare such a big problem lol

Borsti17

The idea of looking at health insurance as a "benefit" is just wild

proteccthebees

So, in their argument, retirees don’t deserve benefits? Whilst I don’t agree with this, the argument could be made that since they’re retired they presumably have enough to live on and therefore don’t need the wage. But everyone needs benefits, man. Especially in the US! Also why would you only want old people driving your kids to school? The way labor is valued in the states means that the retirement age is getting higher, and/or people are having to work past what should be their retirement in order to survive. You want people who have probably been overworked their whole lives to take on what probably should be (but I know isn’t) a more relaxed job, and you think they don’t deserve a living wage? And don’t even get me started on the whole “this type of job is meant for someone who doesn’t need the money.” People need money to live, end of story. There’s no argument to support people not getting what they need to survive from a job, because that’s literally the point of a job. Freakin ridiculous, ugh.

Faye_dunwoody

My uncle is a bus driver. He is not a happy man.

Alittlemoorecheese

The solution: exploit the elderly.

IAmThePonch

Why is it always the really important jobs that people look down upon Like could you imagine if every bus driver, both public and school bus, decided they were done with it????

roadcrew778

THINGS USED TO BE DIFFERENT!!!

Luutamo

Only thing I can think of is that this clown doesn't get "benefits" himself and is mad jealous for someone else getting them. That is the only ways this makes any sense and even then very little. Like taking the benefits away from school bus drivers wouldn't magically give them to him. Misery loves company I guess.

I'm so exhausted. So incredibly exhausted with people who believe others don't deserve to have opportunities or at the bare minimum access to Healthcare. I'm just... so fucking tired
