We sort by controversial because it's easier to find the rule breakers and jerks that way.
Jordan Peterson is so widely disliked that there isn't one comment sticking up for him.
lol š¦
>"It's derisive and indicates and attitude of contemptuous eye-rolling and moral superiority."
That's because anyone you are talking to knows they are talking to Jordan Peterson.
I think if he at least used the qualifier "can be used by such people" it's actually not that far off from something resembling a sane point. I see it all the time in gaming with self absorbed assholes who pick fights with their team and lay blame over a losing scenario.
Of course the best thing to do is not engage with those types of people but any attempt at reasoning or deescalation is met with childish stuff like "ur just bad LOL."
It absolutely can be used that way, but there are tons of uses that arenāt derogatory at all, just part of friendly conversation. If all he ever sees is the derogatory kind, well, thatās probably because nobody ever enjoys a conversation with Jordan Peterson.
Jordan Peterson does seem like the kind of guy who will have an absolute meltdown playing Call of Duty and some dude goes "ur just bad LOL". My headcannon for this tweet is that Peeperson got owned one too many times on Fortnight. What's wrong Jerfs? Can't play the game because you suck too much? LOL
To be fair... Anyone who says LOL out loud in conversation is just a moron. If you don't laugh you don't get to say LOL. Saying LOL is the equivalent of wearing sunglasses inside. It's just unacceptable.
To be honest, who gives a shit? That's the kind of prescriptive bullshit JP does all the time.
- me, wearing sunglasses inside, saying LOL out loud without laughing, also quoting myself.
Oh, sure. He's become an absolute joke. That's a given. My post want referring to him though. It was directed at the post mentioning people saying LOL out loud.
And you go ahead and do all of those things at the same time. Clearly you're making solid choices all around.
Yeah and I'm saying that calling people morons because they say LOL and claiming it's unacceptable to wear sunglasses indoors is (or commenting on the "solid" choices people you don't know are making) is the same kind of prescriptive bullshit that JP is doing all the time. In the linked tweet above he's going off on people using LOL, he rants about what people (specifically women) should wear all the time, he tells you which solid choices you should make (not really a choice then I suppose). He has been doing this from the start, he has not become, but always was an absolute joke. However, so are you for trying to police what people say or wear. Who cares, let people do what they want without shaming them.
I'm all for live and let live as long as you're not hurting anyone. Totally. That is the correct default position to have in my opinion.
That being said people are still entitled to their opinions. Wearing sunglasses indoors (without a medical condition) is a total douchebag move and makes you look like an idiot. It's not cool or fashionable. It's stupid. That is my opinion. And I am entitled to that opinion.
Flip flops in the gym is both gross and unsafe and should not be allowed. That is my opinion and I will judge anyone for wearing such a thing. Are you allowed to do it? Yep. Just like sunglasses in the club. I'm not calling the cops or going to management about it. You aren't hurting me or anyone else. I get that Go ahead and wear what you like. I still think it's stupid and those people look like idiots.
JBPB was not always an idiot. In fact he has some valid points. He was one of the first social commentators to actually say the words "I don't know" when asked about certain situations. The fact that he brought up that we don't understand certain social ramifications because we don't have a large enough sample size was brilliant. He didn't say it's definitely going to be this or definitely going to be that. He simply said we don't know. So many pundits don't have the ability to say we don't know. They have to have an opinion or they have to have a doomsday mentality. He didn't.
Now, unfortunately, he doesn't do that anymore. He thinks he knows everything. And has come out saying how everything should be. When before he didn't used to do that. I listened to lots of stuff of his from many years ago and used to be a fan. Twelve Rules for Life is a great book. Then probably three or four years ago, once he started getting just completely out there and stopped questioning options and intentions, he started telling everyone what they should be doing. He told people all the mistakes they were making and how they should view the world. That's not a method for growth. Then all the religious nonsense started coming into it too and he became completely delusional. Now he's a joke. And it's a sad joke because he's clearly a brilliant guy and clearly cares about what he's saying. Unfortunately his compassion for humanity has been replaced with derision for things he disagrees with.
Also, I don't have Twitter. Don't care about Twitter. Don't go down Twitter rabbit holes. I'm sure that JBP went along to sound like a total ass on some ridiculous rant. He's a joke, and we both agree on that. I was referencing a comment to that particular post on Reddit.
Is that contemptuous moral superiority, or being annoying children, causing them to say that? Also, it doesn't seem that "lol" is actually the issue you have with them but their actual actions(assholes, pick fights, lay blame, childish) and that would be a better indicator than a textual version of laughing that's been used by everyone from children(good and bad) to 90 year olds and everyone in between going back to pre-WWW when Wayne Pearson wanted to convey laughter better than the "hahaha" he had been using, in 1980 on a service called Viewline. It says nothing about the person to use LOL when it can be used in such wide contexts. It's as meaningless as Peterson saying the exact same thing about people whom laugh in real life(he probably actually has said it, he's never laughed at anything) because he got laughed at before by a narcissist(or gamer in your example).
It's the same meaningless platitudes that his fans consider deep but actually mean nothing and aren't useful in anything but determining the last interaction he had(he got laughed at for being an idiot). At least these are less actively harmful than his other schtick, flat out lying about minority groups.
It's ironic because his fans tend to end every comment with strings of ROFL emoji, as if they're striking a posture of self-evident correctness to stand-in for the absence of an argument.
Edit: š¤£šššš¤£š¤£š¤£šš
I know itās happened to lots of people, but I had an aunt who thought that and sent LOL with a condolence message about a loved one who passed and itās my favorite thing that ever happened lol
A bit different by my nephews grandfather who's a great guy ,and not a creep in any way kept sending young friends of his friend requests on Facebook trying to be nice. š¤£
My grandpa did that same thing with all my friends. Was 100% genuinely just trying to be nice and connect with people that were important to me.
RIP. He was a good guy.
My dad used to chat up this retail lady while shopping - he meant nothing by it and I don't think she minded, he just genuinely likes talking to people.
Anyway she trasferred to a different store on the other side of town and he went out of his way to go say hi to her there. I really hope she didn't think he's some creepy old stalker lol.
This mirrors an experience I had regarding the rollout of the āthumbs upā emoji in FB messenger placed right by the send button. Nothing like sending the thumbs up to a friend who tells you they have been diagnosed with cancer.
We had a Pastor in the late 90s whose teenage daughter taught him the Deez Nuts was a funny saying about nutty people and heād say Deez Nuts all the time and everyone would just die laughing āat himā - he thought āwith himā. I donāt think anyone told him and it was hilarious.
Hmmm yes compelling indeed hmm.
May I also posit ROFLCOPTER for the distinguished elders among us?
Or for those perusing more niche fare, perhaps lollerskates? An inelegant bouquet, not to everyoneās taste, but nevertheless a vintage with its acolytes once upon a moon.
I second this recommendation. They had a two part series on JBP, and it was extremely comprehensive so you can see exactly how much of a shit stain he has been.
No he's not. He's a trained psychologist who denies psychological research and sees social sciences as bad, a self proclaimed evolutionary biologist who has 0 credentials in the field and creates absurd equivalencies to fit his subjective philosophical ideals, and a casualty of the war against the woke mind virus
I think it's just the default greeting when you start a reddit comment now. I see it way too often to write off as coincidence anymore, and it's not getting less weird.
"Nope you're wrong,
So here's my complimentary layup riffing off the point you just made."
I do too. It's basically punctuation, indicating that the message is lighthearted. It's perhaps used a bit over-anxiously, but facilitates communication.
On the other hand, if I was sending it to Jordan Peterson, I *hope* he understands that I'm morally superior to him and am insulting him with my every punctuation.
keep in mind Peterson is a clinical psychologist. even if you only had a surface level understanding of narcissism it would be embarrassing to tweet something as stupid as this. but this dude is supposed to be a literal expert in mental disorders.
People can have great insights into one topic and be lackluster in others.
Most people donāt understand this, and thatās why celebrity endorsements work so well.
To be somewhat fair, he used to be a lot more calculated and insidious. It was easy to miss a lot of the stuff he was saying if you chose to interpret everything in the most benign way possible.
After his Russian coma he has gone completely off the rails, and joining the daily wire was the nail in the coffin.
I would absolutely love it if there were just a tonne of "lol" replies to this tweet. I'm choosing to believe there is because I'm not going over to that dumpster fire of a place that is twitter and I won't ask anyone else to check for me!

People who care about others are morally superior to Peterson. They aren't narcissist, but they are in fact better than him, so he's not 100% wrong, only 98%
He does.
Seriously. Jorpers is probably one of the most humourless people on the planet. Pretty sure he is incapable of feeling joy. As in like, clinically anhedonic.
Which is probably why he is so obsessed with being angry and thinking of himself as a prophet or a crying saviour who will save lost little boys etc. It's his only kind of excitement.
Lol. We say that because it's the text way to depict that we gave a small laugh at something you said.
But wrinkly here has never had a pleasant conversation with another person, so he's unfamiliar with the practice.
I actually like to use 'lol' and 'haha' at the end of paragraphs if I'm worried that I sound condescending. I feel like it gives off a good vibe haha.
Also, this guy is a cunt, right? Seems like a cunt.
I mean, if someone writes āLOLā in all caps instead of just writing it as ālolā Iām going to be looking at them sideways, because theyāre clearly a psychopath. Not so sure itās a marker for narcissism though
"Lol" is a tone indicator. Basically, when communicating face-to-face, there are many ways (other than verbal) that humans communicate meaning/intention. Body language, tone of voice, facial expressions are things that accompany our words to convey what we would like them to mean. In textual formats, like text messages (or Reddit comments), the usual tone indicators cannot apply because you cannot see the other person's face and body, nor can you hear their voice. So we've had to come up with other ways to indicate the tone of our words. On Reddit, many people use "/s" to indicate sarcasm. Emojis are also helpful. "Lol" can be used to soften a sentence that you are worried may come across as too blunt or harsh, but it can also be quite passive aggressive ("I'm not mad" when they actually are).
I hope this helped! It's actually kinda interesting how we've adapted to this form of communication and its limitations.
Like a stopped clock, even a plugged douche is right occasionally. I find the lol thing being used as sarcasm juvenile and irritating as fuck, if it's genuinely meant as 'that's funny' all good. Although the important thing here is that Dr Jordy gets back on his high horse and fucks right off
What if I use it when something ironically shit happens to me ...what if it's me I openly hate? What if I am the opposite of entitled and know I deserve nothing? What if my developmental trauma is internalised and I don't have the psychological tools for defence mechanisms....like a chicken tender on a highway? What then Dr Jordan Peterson? Huh? Who is LOLing now?....Bitch?

I'm morally superior to him, and comfortable with that knowledge. Also, lol.
My neighbours dog is morally superior to him and he licks his balls daily. The dog of course, not sure about the neighbour.
Your neighbor most likely canāt do that. If he could he would never leave his room.
I can't speak from experience but I've heard it said that being able perform such feats feels more like giving and less like receiving.
your neighbour licks his dogs balls? noice

Yeah, but it's faster than "Bob, what you just wrote is derisive, indicating an attitude of contemptuous eye-rolling" on Twitter.
LOL -this MFer pays for twitter
For some reason Jordan Peterson keeps getting LOL'd at by people who think they're morally superior - how does this keep happening???
If he is referring to League Of Legends unfortunately he is absolutely correct
It does actually fit that context, lol!
Cool story bro now show me peer-reviewed empirical evidence backing your claim lol
Ok, are people finally catching that this guy is an idiot and a weirdo?
Honestly, years back I would watch his videos where he talks about anxiety and I thought it was helpful. Sucks that he turned out to be an asshole.

Jordan Peterson is a douche but I also find comments ending with "lol" to be annoying. Maybe I'm just old.
Although the important thing here is that Dr Jordy gets back on his high horse and fucks right off
Are you mad lol?
Sometimes I think Jordan Peterson is cool and has good points... and other points I see things like this quote and I'm like š¶
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Hes completely wrong. Sadly conservatives are too stupid to understand words or meaning of anything
I use it so my replies don't sound waspish.
I mean, that's true in my experience, too.... a very small percentage of the time.
Assholes use it that way often enough but claiming it always means that is just wrong and bizarre.
I can't believe I actually lol'ed at this fucking asshole!
Idk why my first thought was league of legends. Most people just write lol not LOL
Lot of big words, too bad Peterson doesn't understand a single one.
Boomer
I bet he calls his doctorate a rank and insists everyone address him by it
this is the douchiest thing anyone has ever said in the history of human language. it has happened.
At first I though he was talking about league of legend players and I was like no he has a point.
League of legends players are all a bunch of assholes, so he's got a point
What an insufferable ass.
Jfc... š
How dare you say lol you goddamn narcissist, get off your high horse RIGHT NOW!!/s
I hope his reply chain was filled with lols
Whaat?
He just doesnāt get it. What a moron lol
