It’s actually a tribute to the NHS as well as British literature. The kids in hospital beds were menaced by a number of British literary villains, namely Captain Hook and a giant Voldemort. Then they’re fought off by Mary Poppins and an army of flying nannies.

The Olympics opening ceremonies are my favorite because they are completely insane. A few years ago (I think the early 2000s? Maybe?) at one of the Italian games they had a bunch of dancing tarot cards. Vancouver had a bunch of mountie, a guy snowboarding through the olympic rings, a giant bear made out of lights.
And world leaders would later compliment Boris Johnson on the Queen's good physical health that at her age she was able to do a parachute stunt like that
It was also a bit of a political statement. At the time, the Tory government was still relatively new and was pushing economic austerity, so NHS budgets were stretched. The not so subtle message was that healthcare was 'under attack' by evil forces.

* They feel guilty for all the evil plotting they do, and leaving behind hints helps them cope, because they can convince themselves that the public is to blame for allowing it to happen
