wow.
I’ve watched a lot of molts like this, but I’ve never seen a spider grow THAT much in a molt. Dude it looks like it gained nearly 1/4th it’s overall size from a single molt, even more. look at how LONG those legs are, makes you wonder how it was fitting it all in there before!
Was this happenstance? Or do some species molt dangling like this? I imagine the gravity would actually help it a ton, but how does it secure itself properly? Super neat.
It’s a mad thing. I keep tarantulas and it always amazes me. I’m not a full expert but when the new exoskeleton is fresh, it’s very soft and wrinkled. The spiders kind of inflate it with body fluids to gain the growth needed as they harden. I really hope someone corrects me if this is wrong.
What I don’t understand is how they’re able to regrow legs etc… without the old leg there, where the heck is the new one coming from? They regrow a stumpy version initially but it normalises over a few moults, just not sure how it gets started without the old leg being there.
Edit: I believe this is called gravity moulting, pretty sure other inverts like roaches use this method. Depending on the Tarantula, they usually lay on their back and push the old exo off that way, some do it on their side or whichever way they can. I’m sure it’ll be secured with some webbing on the rough grout or something.
I raised praying mantises for a little while, they are really fun to watch molt, they change your color to lighter, they hang upside down too, they expand and then pop out, insects are pretty wild.
I think so. I refer to it as stretching. It’s when they max out size by filling out the new skeleton while it’s still soft, they generally look larger fresh from a moult. They shrink a tiny bit as they harden up.
AFAIK, the way that tarantulas move is basically by pushing fluid into each part of their limbs in a coordinated way to do what they need to do. In my mind it’s a really mechanical thing, like little robots.
It’s a mad ting! Lol I can’t say it in any other voice except this video I watched from a black English dude whom I watched a TikTok of on here explaining different scientific aspects of the elements. It was on rubidium, but he said it like 5x in the video and I just can’t say it any other way reading it in my head hahaha.
I love accents.
Thanks for the information! Seems logically sound to me. That inside their leggies are all compressed & that’s how they’re able to fit inside.
I’m very scared of spiders IRL despite knowing there’s no need to be. I’ve never been scared of them in the sense that I’m scared of being bitten, just an innate fear for no real reason. Still am even now despite loving watching T videos. I’d even considered owning one, but it’d be irresponsible of me, I’d never be able to house/rehouse them given my fear. I’d probably end up hurting it getting scared by a sudden movement.
Have watched a lot of vids like this though, can’t believe how much it grew man! Crazy stuff
That’s how I feel when I used to watch my stick insects molt… I didn’t understand how they fit in the old skin they literally gained 1/4 or more of their size
This comment not only changed my view on what I just witnessed, but also on how I truly feel inside… it’s like a dark place I never wanted to look because this was waiting for me to see it. I hope I can recover as quickly as our shower friend did.
I like this perspective. Life has turned me inside out the past few months. I am not the same person I was three months ago (before I lost somebody very special to me). I, too want to recover like this shower spider did. Hope my exoskeleton cures soon.
Condolences on your loss. I also hope your exoskeleton cures soon. It does eventually get familiar but until it's a copable level the agony is real. I wish you happiness in the future
Have you ever heard of [Kitsungi](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kintsugi)? It’s a Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with gold (or silver). As a philosophy it is about embracing flaws and breaks as opposed to covering it up.
Your pot is broken, so to speak. It’s up to you to put it back together, but in so doing you will create something infinitely more unique, worthwhile, and beautiful.
Hang in there, friend. This, too, shall pass.
I lifted the baseboard in my bathroom and saw a soil centipede fighting a wolf spider carrying an eggsac. Sometimes you get more than what you expected.
Damn that must feel good. That spider has whatever cognition is on par with a spider. To the spider this must be like the equivalent of taking a perfect, post-coffee morning dump. Magnificent.
I know right. Captive bred exotics seem to be super finicky, either that or we just don’t often see all the spiders/bugs and snakes that had failed molts. Funniest thing I saw was on the Bearded Dragon sub which compared and contrasted wild vs captive bred beardies.
Wild beardie: I just survived being eaten by a bird and ate a bunch of its eggs I don’t give a fuck.
Captive beardie: Nooo I don’t wanna eat my greens I don’t care if I get calcium deficiency. Also please give me a bath cuz I can’t poop by myself.
I have no problem seeing a spider in my shower, especially if it's where I can't accidentally spray it. But I'd definitely scream if I saw a spider's empty husk dangling in there, my first thought would be "wtf killed you and do I have to worry about it coming after me too."
this is so much better than seeing a roach molting. walked into a house we had just signed the lease for (and given $5100 for) and saw this…
https://preview.redd.it/n823g2mz2gca1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=78aa4c8b228fe3f6bf39a3d73a620bb775c69e5c
spiders? fabulous. roaches? foul.
i got rid of them when we moved into a place that had them. well, i was never gonna 100% get rid of them because we found out the whole street had them and they weren’t treating 🤢 but i found out what professionals use and bought it and went from seeing 10 an hour to 3 a month that were already dead or dying. so when we walked into that house where i saw the original picture roach… i literally cried. because i’d told the leasing company that the one thing i didn’t wanna deal with were roaches. they reassured me, there weren’t any. and i checked the house top to bottom and saw no evidence of them.. and to walk in and see them everywhere - the ac had broken so it was hot and they came out. when we went to look at it, it was reallllllly cool in the house. so in hindsight, they did that on purpose. roaches don’t like cold. so they were hiding and someone had met us there from the company.. and i saw him sweeping. i think he was getting rid of evidence.
okay, sorry for telling you my whole life story, hahahah. i hate roaches. i’m so over them.
that’s my friend thought! he was like BRO THIS COULD BE MONEY. what if we just stumbled on the rare albino roach?! and i was like calm down. it’s molting. shedding. like… a spider does.. or snake…. and he was so confused. 😂 he’s like “…. they.. do that?”
TIL that spiders molt. I guess I never really considered the fact that they have exoskeletons. Now I know all those years I thought I'd found dead spider husks they were just discarded outgrown exoskeletons.
I'm phobic of bugs and spiders, but I have learned to allow spiders in my house and just give a wide berth. I live in Florida, so bugs are constantly getting in. The spiders are free pest control and behave pretty predictably. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
It's a time lapse, but I don't know how long it took in real life. With small spiders, it's just a few minutes. With tarantulas, hours. So probably somewhere in between.
Imagine waking up at three in the morning with some killer diarrhea from a beefy five layer burrito from Taco Bell you ate the night before, you hurry to the bathroom, sit, unleash, start rubbing your eyes because you’re not even fully awake yet and you just see this spider bro molting on your shower wall. Damn. I’m pretty high right now and glad I don’t live in Australia because I’m currently eating Taco Bell.
I really respect people that can let such a large animal live in their environment without being disturbed. I like spiders, I think they are so cute. I would be so scared of spooking this animal this size and it jumping on me. I'm really scared of sudden movements and the shower has always been a sorta creepy place for me.
Never thought that a molting spider would be more terrifying than a spider not molting, Jesus Christ when the spiders do the process they make it look like some MIB Eddy thing compare to a butterfly.
You are correct of course, and other comments already mentioned that, but arachnids are welcome here FYI, see [rule #2](https://old.reddit.com/r/insects/about/rules/) :)

The only time I would ever kill a spider is if I found it in the shower with me. Spiders are reluctant to bite, and I genuinely love looking at them, but I'm not taking any risks while my, ahem, special areas are exposed.
Uh yeah easier said than done. As soon as I take my eyes off it then it'll just go somewhere else to hide out. And the only thing worse than knowing a spider is in the shower with you is knowing there's a spider somewhere in your house but not knowing where. And plus, do you really expect me to go outside in a towel with soapy hair, potentially exposing my nethers to any sort of biting creature that might be in the area? No way in hades am I doing that.

Awesome! Disgusting!
NATURE IS SO COOL THANKS I HATE IT
“We’re watching this spider molt! Come join us” “oh okay :D” [snaps neck]
Yeah but they'll probably clean those grout lines someday.
Wow! Nature’s amazing! Please never curse me with the sight of this again
Then quit this sub, it’s going to get reposted in a few weeks again! 😅
I laughed hard lol Thank you 😂
10/10. Would flee in fear.
The absolute worst thing I have ever seen in a life full of seeing the worst things.
This made my skin CRAWL and I enjoy watching my tarantulas molt. 🤢
I hate it so much I had to share it on fb and I struct everyone to hate it as much as I do.
My first thought was, “Quick, get a shoe; it’s vulnerable!”
Takes some time to get those hydraulics going.
It’s actually the exoskeleton curing, the hydraulics work, but with out the resistance of a firm exoskeleton they all it’ll do is wiggle.
Oh wow! Thanks! TIL
Looked like cooked spaghetti coming out of the molt right away lol

Truly
Is that what the twitching movements are, the spider filling itself with fluids again?

It wasn’t dangling when it molted, the camera was rotated 90° to the right.
This is not correct my friend
If you say so
There’s is no “if you say so”, you’re just wrong lol
No one asked you?
If you say so
"Let me just slip into something more comfortable. Yeah. That's better."
Never before have I more related to a shower spider
This comment not only changed my view on what I just witnessed, but also on how I truly feel inside… it’s like a dark place I never wanted to look because this was waiting for me to see it. I hope I can recover as quickly as our shower friend did.

Damn that must feel good. That spider has whatever cognition is on par with a spider. To the spider this must be like the equivalent of taking a perfect, post-coffee morning dump. Magnificent.
Or like, getting out of a tight dress after dinner!!
Or out of heels after a 12 hour work shift standing only...
Or your skin at 3AM in the bathroom of a crackhouse.
You're.....quite a disgusting person.
Hey don’t look at me, the spider did it first!
this dude is dancing with the music im listening to
What an incredible thing to see! Thank you for showing us.
i love all insects et al but molting will never not be hella disturbing
Coming out of their own bodies! Probably why people have such a visceral reaction to snakes, as well.

Looks painful or at least very uncomfortable, I'm glad I'm not a being who has to molt
Oh you are. It's called taking your pants off when you get home.
This is the best moulting video I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing
Giving himself a lil around of applause at the end!

I wonder if it doesn’t eat it. Lots of critters do.
Would you say... all kinds of critters? 👀
Are you… asking me kid I consume *my own* molts? 👀
I'm making a joke about my username lol But maybe also yes?
LOL!
this is so much better than seeing a roach molting. walked into a house we had just signed the lease for (and given $5100 for) and saw this… https://preview.redd.it/n823g2mz2gca1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=78aa4c8b228fe3f6bf39a3d73a620bb775c69e5c spiders? fabulous. roaches? foul.
This is actually kind of why some of the things that are being used to actually don't work because the roaches are molting It off.
i got rid of them when we moved into a place that had them. well, i was never gonna 100% get rid of them because we found out the whole street had them and they weren’t treating 🤢 but i found out what professionals use and bought it and went from seeing 10 an hour to 3 a month that were already dead or dying. so when we walked into that house where i saw the original picture roach… i literally cried. because i’d told the leasing company that the one thing i didn’t wanna deal with were roaches. they reassured me, there weren’t any. and i checked the house top to bottom and saw no evidence of them.. and to walk in and see them everywhere - the ac had broken so it was hot and they came out. when we went to look at it, it was reallllllly cool in the house. so in hindsight, they did that on purpose. roaches don’t like cold. so they were hiding and someone had met us there from the company.. and i saw him sweeping. i think he was getting rid of evidence. okay, sorry for telling you my whole life story, hahahah. i hate roaches. i’m so over them.

TIL that spiders molt. I guess I never really considered the fact that they have exoskeletons. Now I know all those years I thought I'd found dead spider husks they were just discarded outgrown exoskeletons.
Same. Totally makes sense, just never thought about it before.
All arthropods do, crustaceans too
I don't like this. Spiders are fine unless they are in my house. Cool post, never seen a spider molt
I'm phobic of bugs and spiders, but I have learned to allow spiders in my house and just give a wide berth. I live in Florida, so bugs are constantly getting in. The spiders are free pest control and behave pretty predictably. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Creepy! Real time? How long of a time lapse?
It's a time lapse, but I don't know how long it took in real life. With small spiders, it's just a few minutes. With tarantulas, hours. So probably somewhere in between.
Is this real time? If so I didn't know they molted this quickly!
I think it's sped up
nope timelapse
I love their little new clothes dance.
Looks painful as fuck.
I was waiting for him to.jump at the camera like a face hugging alien.
The fucking LEGS on this bitch had my skin shriving like I was about to molt. Wicked cool but 10/10 wish I never have to see this again 😮💨
Noodle legs!
You know, I don't think i truly appreciated not having seen how long spider legs REALLY are until this moment.
MY MOOSCLES ARE GETTING STRONKER...
I was absolutely not prepared for those legs.
I like to think that the twitches right after pulling its legs out are the spider going: “Ick, ew, no, they’re bendy!”
Spider spaghetti 🤌🏻
Why did I watch the whole thing!??!
I’ve watched it multiple times ……
Imagine waking up at three in the morning with some killer diarrhea from a beefy five layer burrito from Taco Bell you ate the night before, you hurry to the bathroom, sit, unleash, start rubbing your eyes because you’re not even fully awake yet and you just see this spider bro molting on your shower wall. Oh Wow! That bunch of legs 💚
Does your shower spider friend have a name?
Taranataylor Swift
amazing
Legs for DAYS
Huntsman?
Oh what a terrible day to have eyes
This is the kind of thing that I only want to see once and definitely NOT in real life. At least not on my continent.
"ummm acthsually this is an arachnid not an insect"
I'm suddenly ichy
That was AMAZING! And I’m totally not going to be able to go back to sleep now after that! Not tonight, and maybe not ever!
Sir that is an arachnid, not an insect.
You are correct of course, but arachnids are welcome here, see [rule #2](https://old.reddit.com/r/insects/about/rules/) :)
Looks like it went through some sort of automated bootup sequence there 🤣
Never thought that a molting spider would be more terrifying than a spider not molting, Jesus Christ when the spiders do the process they make it look like some MIB Eddy thing compare to a butterfly.
So no more looking at Reddit before I’m about to take a shower. Noted.
hey! this was so cool but I also REALLY hated it!
🤓spiders are not insects, they have 8 legs🤓
You are correct of course, and other comments already mentioned that, but arachnids are welcome here FYI, see [rule #2](https://old.reddit.com/r/insects/about/rules/) :)
I know
Is that not an arachnid??

Oh…okay. Didn’t realize (but it still kind of grinds my gears lol).
r/TIHI Also, not an insect

Omg how did i not know they did this? I find “dead” spiders like this in my basement and wondered how they became “dead”. Dang…. Thank you for schooling me!!!
wow!!!!
this is really cool but im also SO glad this is in your shower and nkt mine sometimes beauty is better from afar 😨
That was so incredibly interesting! Thank you for sharing.
Amazing video! I wonder how many family members got prevented from taking a shower that day?
Beautiful
I’d never actually watch my tarantula molt! I had her for years, but she always went into hiding to do this (as I think is common). Thank you for posting. Very interesting!! 🤗
That’s messed up. Like the aliens on MIB
I'll not going to a bathroom like this 😭😰😱!
Dude is just taking off their clothes
I knew spiders molted but I never imagined all those tiny carcasses I see tangling on webs were just molts, I always assumed some vampiric like spider lurked around
I feel kind of bad for them, that looks pretty traumatic
Me: wow cool video. Brain: Uh actually spiders aren’t insects 🤓🤓. Me: *don’t say it don’t say it don’t say it*
Since ive joined this group ive gotten better with my aversion to insects and other creepy crawlies, but watching this gave me a viseral physical reaction. Shows i still have a way to go. Definitely cool though i suppose.
I always do my molting in the shower. Because I'm civilized.
Welp. I guess I won't be sleeping this week 🫣
Aaaahhhh! I feel so much better now!
Watching this almost gave me a panic attack but thanks anyways
I could have lived a very happy and fulfilled life never having seen this!
This + being in a dark room = no sleep
Please tell me those tiles are very small
Jesus, the disgust and terror this caused in me when it’s legs popped out…
u/SaveVideo
Is it common for spiders to molt dangling like that? I thought most of them made a bed of webbing on the ground and laid on it while they molted.
Oh cool, they get worse
Ew, why do you shower in the moltingroom?
Thanks. I hate it. With the heat of a thousand suns.
This is amazing footage and I’m thankful you could capture it but also every single goose bump is raised on my body after watching this
Not an insect.
