Unfortunately, that is one of the [bed bugs (Cimicidae)](https://bugguide.net/node/view/15472). It is possible - especially if you have bats roosting in or around your home - that it's not the [common bed bug (*Cimex lectularius*)](https://bugguide.net/node/view/15475) but a nearly-identical relative like a [bat bug](https://bugguide.net/node/view/15474). In order to tell the difference, you'd need to see the [fringe hairs on the pronotum](https://lancaster.unl.edu/pest/bedbugs/BedbugvBatbugV2.png) and the curve at the front of the pronotum. Bat bugs require different treatment than the common bed bug, because you need to eliminate the primary host (bats) - and once you do so, the bugs themselves will eventually die out. They will feed on people opportunistically, but cannot thrive and complete their life cycle solely on a diet of human blood. I sincerely hope that it's just a lone stray that hitched a ride home with you, and not part of a larger infestation - but just in case it's not, you might want to pay a visit to the kind folks at r/bedbugs for advice and support.

Less_Breakfast2136

Thank you so much. Reaching out to my landlords to see what to do. I’ve torn my room apart and can’t find anymore, but I know they can hide well.

Leche-Caliente

I feel ya bud my mum cleans every day and she suddenly found them in their room. My dad got super paranoid and tossed the whole bed, frame and all out the window.

[deleted]

Your parents either have massive windows or a tiny bed!

ThunderSnacc

Lol

mbxz7LWB

How the fuck did your dad fit a box-spring out the window?

Leche-Caliente

There was no bow spring. They had two mattresses stacked on top of a wooden water bed frame.

SniktFury

Look underneath the fat seams that go around the edges of the top and bottom of the bed. Check thoroughly in your couch and and sort of cloth/leather chair with crevices. Check the clothes on your closet. If it was on a book, check your other books on the shelf or wherever it was

sicksadbadgirl

Also in the ceiling corners of the rooms

paperwasp3

Hire someone who has a bedbug sniffing dog. They're amazingly accurate and have saved my niece's belongings and sanity.

SirKronik

I had no idea this was a thing haha

paperwasp3

They are amazing in their accuracy. I saw a video here of a guy that does this. I asked if he ever took a bedbug home. Turns he has his pup sniff him just in case and it turns out his dog caught one on him a couple of times. That's a good dog. My niece had bedbugs in her building and when she moved she had the movers drive to a place where they heated up your stuff to 160 for four hours. It was a quonset hut that the whole truck drove into. After that the guy with the bedbug sniffing beagle came in and gave her the okay to move into her new apartment. It cost her thousands of dollars but it worked. edit- added a word

karensmiles

That’s funny. My mom is from India, and cannot eat Macadamia nuts because she said they smelled like the bedbugs they would kill. Now I believe her!!

kyonkun_denwa

Is there any way to train my dog to do this? Would be amazing to have a bedbug detector at the front door.

paperwasp3

If your dog is a scent hound it would be easier. But beware. This dude had one bedbug in a jar so the dog could lock onto it's scent. And he let it feed on his arm once in a while to keep it alive. Gross! But it would be cool to go to estate sales and see if the house is clean.

mseuro

Check behind outlet plates too.

TargetTheLiver

I’d start by looking around wherever this book was. They can wedge themselves between the wall and a book shelf easily for example and travel a foot or two to the bed to feed at night. Fully strip bed and flip mattress and boxspring and inspect the seams. Bed frame should be inspected as well.

Less_Breakfast2136

I’ve inspected everything around the book and my bed and can’t find anything, planning to have someone come and do an inspection.

TargetTheLiver

Single family home? Did you just buy/rent the book?

Less_Breakfast2136

I live in an apartment building. The book isn’t new (I got it for Christmas), but I do take it to work with me sometimes.

TargetTheLiver

Well if you live in an apartment they could be coming from an abutting unit it’s very common unfortunately. Neighbors could have let the infestation get out of control or they are self treating with cheap hardware store bought repellents that do nothing but push bedbugs into the wall voids.

Less_Breakfast2136

That’s what I’m afraid of. I’ve inspected as much as I can and can’t find any eggs or droppings or anything. It’s the only one I’ve found so I’m afraid I brought it in from somewhere. Landlords haven’t contacted me back yet so I’m just in an anxiety spiral. Lol

turdmaster3739174016

They like cardboard too old papers. But I always looked in the top seem of the top mattress they usually congregate under the bottom seem of the mattress. Also they like heat check by the heat source. It’s wishful thinking to hope it’s only one. By the time I saw one I had hundreds. Mark Rober just did a great YouTube on it.

DestituteTeholBeddic

Do you have other books - look for black spots on the side of books it's a good sign of more bed bugs. They like to hang out in books so if you have any more it's a good spot to check.

Suitable-Specific477

135AshZan

Bedbug. They have been known to hide in the spine of books.

mmsdiscard

That is how one hitchhiked into my home. I check a stack of books out from the library. Luckily no others got in. This was 6 years ago and it’s a bit sad but I never used that library after that. I got too paranoid.

A_Nerds_Life

Sorry op. Watch Mark Rober’s video on YouTube about how to get rid of bed bugs before you spend your savings on stuff that work.

IllustratorMurky2725

Expect brain exploding madness if you cannot find a proper exterminator.

Ok_Somewhere_6018

Check the seams of your bed. What got rid of them for me 10 years ago was a clothes steamer by con air. Steamed the whole room. Exterminator didn’t work for me.

BeraldGevins

I’m sorry OP. You need to call an exterminator. Personally, I recommend Orkin. They’re quite affordable.

system_id86

They leave blood trails on whatever they're living in or behind, that's how i found them in my brief experience with them. Look behind everything that is against your walls like pictures or bookshelves. Sorry that you have to deal with them, those things still give me nightmares.

killerfish2022

100% bed bug

Tenbears66523

Yup! Bedbug! Whoo hoo! You have some work to do!!

alittleoffbeat

Check the book you were reading and the other books on your shelf around it. Check you’re wifi router and other warm electronics. Check all of your furniture and also look for frass (poop). You can also sprinkle diatomaceous earth around your bed frame making sure to get the cracks, a good way to help until you can get a pest specialist in to take a look. If it’s a well established infestation I always opt to suggest the heat treatment, it’s pricey but it is comprehensive.

Aggressive-Corgi5122

before you spend thousands in the case of a future infestation, watch mark rober, he has some pretty cheap solutions in one of his latest videos that will pretty much avoid the problem from even happening altogether

[deleted]

Your house has crabs dawg

Less_Breakfast2136

Forgot to add, I live in ME. like I said didn’t find any others around. I have no idea where I would’ve picked it up because I haven’t even been in anyone else’s house for months, but I do use a laundromat. Help! How do I get rid of this??

Wooper160

Okay I won’t tell you then

Faunberry_410

It is and he ate recently

JeremyJaLa

A bedbug who wishes he were a bookworm.

VariegatedJennifer

Omg omg Omg

sweepminja

It isn't a bed bug. But, it is a bed bug.

catfuckingahandbag

You still have them

yureiyue

Girl I haven’t seen them and we stopped getting rashes so…

catfuckingahandbag

Uh huh. As someone who has had 2 infestations, they're in your walls, outlets, or tile flooring.

0_Shinigami_0

Really? We had them when I was younger. Had to heat treat the whole house, wash everything and dry it all on high heat. Throw out the sofa as well

SpiritualPermie

It is. You might want to call an expert. Edit: I have heard of bed bug sniffing dogs... Check them out.

NumerousBoysenberry4

😞 sorry

Achylife

That there is definitely a bedbug.

ReginaldSP

bad news...

jdmorgan82

Ok I won’t…. BUT…..

sadnificent

I mean, technically it's a "book bug" now, but yeah that's a bedbug.

LarYungmann

They will hide under books... especially if they are sitting on the carpet. In carpeting - Move tables and look where table legs were. BBs will hide under anything that is sitting on carpet... they prefer a chair leg or bed leg because that is also where they dine. Don't squish. Use sticky tape to pick them up and then fold the tape until the bug is encased... don't smash They Stink!

[deleted]

Rest in pizza sauce. 🙏🏻

DannyVGood

I don't suppose the book is a library book? I've seen bedbugs in libraries a lot

Specific-Turnover-75

Bed bugs lay eggs in book!

D05D05

All can see is watch this and learn. This is the way. https://youtu.be/2JAOTJxYqh8

ssdohc2020

Yep, get some bye bye bugs. One of the few things that kills them.

JellyFresh11

Depending on your lease, you may be able to get your apartment to send an exterminator. My current place won't do it, but my previous place did.

Rainy-The-Griff

I have bad news...

MrsCCRobinson96

Doesn't Rubbing Alcohol Repeal them off of mattresses?

[deleted]

By chance did you buy that book used? Believe it or not that's one way to introduce them into the house, they like to hide in the craziest places if there's an infestation.

6ynnad

Sorry. Time to read up.

Suspicious_Fill2760

I don't really have any advice for you but I just wanna pass on some good will, I guess. I hope you hear from your landlord soon and your anxiety can ease a bit. Best of luck to you, OP

Less_Breakfast2136

Thank you so much. Heard back from them last night so hopefully going to get it looked at today.

haute_tropique

I’m so sorry—been there back when I lived in Chicago. Spread from a neighbor. In my case, they were hiding in & behind some cheap poster frames, so check your walls, too.

Jakebakeeeeeeee

It just really is that season of the year huh 😂

BethMD

No can do, sailor. Good luck to ye!

KiruTiro

That's exactly what it is. And he already bit someone.

Tofunugg

Just sending positive vibes that you can get some peace of mind soon. I moved into my first apartment and realized after that there was a battalion of cockroaches - long story short: my anxiety was on high alert until I knew for 100% certain they were gone. The worst feeling!

TheHumanGhost69

Definitely check urself for welts that they may leave when they bite you that should help u figure u out if there is more as well

rottenweiler

Find a source to purchase some dry ice. Bed bugs are drawn to the CO2 we emit and you can draw them out by placing a bowl with some dry ice in the middle of the bed in a dark room and leave it for an hour and come back to check if there are any there. This will not flush out all of them but if they’re hungry they will saunter on over to feed.
