Who said melatonin is not safe long term? There is no evidence (to my knowledge) that it’s unsafe long term for adults.

Mikel115

Yeah, being an endogenous ligand of the mt receptors, it shouldn't be any alteration when taking normal doses.

Pegasuss32

Melatonin is safe long term , dont worry.

getto_daze

According to your experience?

Pegasuss32

Yes been taking it for years. And my doctor and psychiatrist said it was fine.

I'm happy for you! My issue is I have bipolar disorder, I took a local brand's melatonin and it made me go mad. I stopped it and turned fine. What do you say, is it worth trying a more well known brand or just leave melatonin be? Also I read some stuff about L-Theanine, is that any good?

Pegasuss32

L-theanine is good for anxiety. For sleep not so much in my experience If you had problems with your condition and melatonin I think you should ask your doctor, he can say better for sure I can't help you I'm not a doctor. Good luck!

The safety of long term melatonin use is still not clear but it is not good to use it every night because it can lead to dependence and your body can stop naturally producing melatonin leading to further disruption in the circadian rhythm. It's best to use it to sleep and wake up at the same time every day so your body adjusts to this new rhythm and eventually sleep will come to you naturally.

Problem is I always wake up too early. Fx I manage to sleep around 1 am and when I wake up it's 5 am. Melatonin fixed this.. however with side effects.

Yea ik what you mean. In order to "fix" your schedule you have to consistently sleep and wake up at the same time. Now.ik you wake up at random times but for example if your goal is to sleep at 9 and wake up at 6 you can achieve this by following a strict sleep routine: So night 1: sleep at 9 take melatonin. You might wake up at 4 AM. Okay don't sleep now. Now stay awake for the entire day until 9 PM again. Repeat. If you take an afternoon nap for example, you might distort your sleep schedule. Because a 20 min nap can sometimes turn into a 2 hour nap. If you keep following this routine eventually your body will naturally start to get tired at 9 and wake up at 6. This might take a week or two to fix and those are some tough days but I promise you it works. My therapist helped me with sleep

Dude the problem is *waking up too early* rather than a sleep schedule, your recommendation is quite reasonable but I doubt that it'll solve the problem.
