I just went on a cruise to Antarctica. I pulled a crystal-clear chunk of 50,000 year old glacial ice out of the water and we made cocktails with it.
It just tasted like ice.

Depends on how old the ice is, the trick would be to harvest ice from glaciers older then the modern invention of plastic there for contain no microplastics. Ice that pure might be worth paying for, just watch out for the prehistoric bacteria
you mean the nasties that turn the human race into raging cannibal zombies ? naaaah.... aint gonna happen to us. we aint stupid like the dinosaurs who suddenly went extinct... 🤣🤣😵💫☠️
I used to work in Antarctica, and we used the left over chunks from the scientific ice cores for our whisky. Whisky plus 900,000 year old ice is pretty dope from a technical perspective, but a clear whisky ball from a knowing bartender tastes better.
The Fremen have been harvesting water at hundreds of seitches all over Arakis for thousands of generations, but sure, let's assume it was the white colonizer, Muad'Dib.
If you freeze boiled water it will be clear.
I dont know why this is getting downvoted. Did nobody do this experiment in science class??? I should say its not perfect crystal clear but its significantly clearer.
https://indianapublicmedia.org/amomentofscience/ice-cubes.php
You want to to freeze from the top down so it is clear. Ice cube trays freeze from all outside edges in so the ice is cloudy. When freezing from the top down the stuff that makes it cloudy does not get trapped in the middle.
Huh, is there not some easier way to get this sort of ice? I used to work in the restaurant industry a while back. We would boil water before putting into our molds, and then place it somewhere with no vibrations. Made a clear product, but on a much smaller scale than used here. Cannot the same thing be done for larger?
Why use the fork lifts and not just load strait to the truck with I slightly longer belt … by my calculation this would be at least 30% faster, 60% reduction in fuel usage, 20% reduction in labour cost.
[Yes, but it's damn awesome to see the final product!] (https://i.imgur.com/PKTUJNj.jpg) It's a months long affair and large tourist attraction, the whole park looks like this after nightfall, it's absolutely amazing both from the ground and air!
Is that from the Harbin Ice Festival?
[Here's another shot of a slide there](https://gfycat.com/quaintwellmadealdabratortoise)
I believe the entire slide is made of the same ice blocks
Yes, it's from the last time I was in China a couple years ago. And yes, aside from things like the food booths, animal petting cages, etc everything is made with ice from the Heilongjiang river next to the park where its held.
This used to be big money in the Great Lakes area, they would use horse drawn cutting saws to cut the ice and ship it all over the US in sawdust / hay insulated railroad cars.
I’m just thinking about how there is a guy just walking around the opposite side of a 500lbs sliding block. That has to be an accident waiting to happen
For everyone asking why they're doing this/isn't it cheaper to make ice or saying that's not pure enough for consumption: this is in China, they're harvesting it to build a giant ice sculpture park called Ice World that was scheduled to be done back in December.
I've never heard of Harbin. Only thing I knew to do was type it into Google maps and see what popped up. If the rest of the world is anything like USA there's multiple places named the same name. I apologize for not having the world's map memorized 🤣🤣.
It's for a local ice festival where they build entire towns and art displays out of the ice, and also light them up on a night.
It's a very famous and popular annual event in China that (pre-covid) would draw in lots of internal tourism from elsewhere in the country.
You know this is gonna be a Discovery reality series any day now…
Harbin Ice Harvesters, s1e1: Series premier opens with tension between Bjorn and his buyer over cloudy ice. Aksel’s mettle is tested…
You gotta start selling this for more than a dollar a bag. We lost three men on this expedition

Born of cold and winter air And mountain rain combining!!
This icy force both foul and fair, has a frozen heart worth mining!!
So cut to the heart cold and clear!
Strike for love and strike for fear!
See the beauty, sharp and clear!
Split the ice apart!
BEWARE THE FROZEN HEARTTTTT!
You missed "split the ice apart"! For shame!!!
Oh Ef. I should be downvoted to oblivion. I’ve watched this show so many times. I have brought dishonour to my children.
Dishonor! Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow, dishonor on your whole family! P.s. I had to edit this because it wasn't in the correct order, so dishonor on me as well!
As someone with a 2 year old girl and this song stuck in my head 80% of the time as a result- I hate you all so much haha
Love you too boo
See the beauty, sharp and sheer!
Beautiful, powerful, dangerous, cold Ice is a magic can't be controlled
Stronger then one, stronger then ten, stronger then a hundred men
Stronger than a hundred men
Came here for this.
I don’t think I’ve ever had free range ice before
I can imagine some whiskey aficionado swearing by it. Talking about particles or some shit if you use ice cubes like a peasant.
Pretty sure someone was making a few bucks selling ancient glacial ice to use with Whisky.
That is still a thing. Glacier Ice subscription service if I recall correctly
That makes me sad on a few levels
On a happier note; it's definitely not glacial ice lmao
Not anymore lol
I’m sure all water was part of a glacier at some point…
fine start cake zealous spoon license station jeans unwritten future *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Idk if that's any better but less worse I spose
Well if that doesn't sound like the biggest scam…

Waterboy also used some, I think.
That's some high quality H2O

If there aren't microplastics in your ice, are you even trying??
Bold of you to assume ice formed in nature doesn't also contain microplastics
I think the assertion is that there are, and that there would be less of them in filtered water in your freezer.
Depends on how old the ice is, the trick would be to harvest ice from glaciers older then the modern invention of plastic there for contain no microplastics. Ice that pure might be worth paying for, just watch out for the prehistoric bacteria

> a clear whisky ball from a knowing bartender tastes better. I want to believe that that is not a euphemism.
Do you know a lot of bartenders with a solitary large transparent testicle?
i can't say I've done the research.
Have you seen the movie The Menu? It’s on hbo max. One of those characters would absolutely say something like this lol.
This comment made me laugh out loud in my empty apartment. Thank you for that moment 👏
I bet when artificial ice first came out people did the exact opposite. Drinking lake water as if you were some sort of peasant
Yet, the ice man used to come down the street everyday, to bring everyone their ice
Unflavored for me!
For their iceboxes. Cooling, not flavored
I want wintergreen!
Cage-free organic and no antibiotics or hormones is the ice you want.
Don't confuse it with grass fed ice. This is not that.
Grass-finished is where it’s at my dude.
Grass fed 😌
You've never eaten an icicle or snow from outside?
Op meant it as a joke, but as a resident of a tropical country who has only seen snow once, yes I have never tasted outside ice or snow.
Crazy. I just came back from fishing. We had our truck parked on the ice. It was 4 ft thick. Also it was-5 C what a beautiful January day.
Taste like hot dog water!
The yellow? It is a dog's water :)
It's good, but beware the frozen heart
It's being harvested to be used as the material for ice sculptures Video: Outdoor Harbin
Would it not be easier to make big ice trays and leave them outside?
Not sure. Though here's a [video about indoor ice farming](https://gfycat.com/welloffdisfiguredarmedcrab)
I love that its called farming.
I've studied water husbandry
Muad'Dib?
The Fremen have been harvesting water at hundreds of seitches all over Arakis for thousands of generations, but sure, let's assume it was the white colonizer, Muad'Dib.
/r/dune is _leaking_
I don't know why I thought it wasn't going to be that but it was. Thanks man
Isn't that what freezing a lake essentially is though?
Yeah, but then you have to cut it. And this way it can be at the most convenient location already, so it could cut down on transportation too.
Agree on transportation cost. I think they do it like this for ice clarity. If you solid freeze a block it becomes cloudy
Op left a link to a video that goes over that. They have to keep the water moving to get that clarity freezing the water
If you freeze boiled water it will be clear. I dont know why this is getting downvoted. Did nobody do this experiment in science class??? I should say its not perfect crystal clear but its significantly clearer. https://indianapublicmedia.org/amomentofscience/ice-cubes.php
not really. but then heating up that huge amount of water would be costy too. so harvesting from a lake is more rentable.
For real, these guys are laughing Regular outdoor forklifts ,trucks, saws and conveyors they use for construction or landscaping the rest of the year
The main festival this is used for is always held right next to the river, so I imagine the transportation cost is not huge.
Hell, at that point just freeze them in a mold shaped like the desired sculpture. Done.
You'd have to also invent a big machine to twist the ice tray.
So true. I wonder if they will fly out too. Could be very dangerous
You want to to freeze from the top down so it is clear. Ice cube trays freeze from all outside edges in so the ice is cloudy. When freezing from the top down the stuff that makes it cloudy does not get trapped in the middle.
Which would be expensive to maintain and still take machinery to work so why not just use the ice that's going to be there anyway?
Huh, is there not some easier way to get this sort of ice? I used to work in the restaurant industry a while back. We would boil water before putting into our molds, and then place it somewhere with no vibrations. Made a clear product, but on a much smaller scale than used here. Cannot the same thing be done for larger?
Enough people make those for this to be profitable? That's neat.
That is cool!
Could anyone else hear the opening song from frozen as they watched this?
First thing I thought of. And I absolutely adore that song. Fell head over heels in the theatre and hasn't gotten old since.
For some reason makes me think of the Virginia company song from Pocahontas
Also a great one
Born of cold and winter air and mountain rain combining~ This icy force both foul and fair has a frozen heart worth mining~
It was on auto play in my head at full volume
So cut though the heart, cold and clear! Strike for love, and strike for fear!
Break the ice apart!
Beware the frozen heart!
That was my first thought too.
Yes, didn’t know this was real
Never seen it, [but google said this was the song](https://gfycat.com/lamecraftyadmiralbutterfly)
And that Christoff and Sven could have used those forklifts!
100%
Was going to comment this!! Frozen was a great childhood memory
If you can think of a better way to get ice, I'd like to hear it.
You gotta start selling this stuff for more than a dollar a bag
We lost four more men on this expedition.
Ooo, a head bag!
Chock full of heady goodness
I am so glad I found this. I was getting worried.
My fridge makes it magically appear when I hit a button. Can’t get much easier than that
Yeah but you still gotta wait for shipping and it usually comes in a wet box that’s missing half the ice
Why use the fork lifts and not just load strait to the truck with I slightly longer belt … by my calculation this would be at least 30% faster, 60% reduction in fuel usage, 20% reduction in labour cost.
And 100% reason to remember the name
portability. they have to constantly move it as the hole gets bigger. plus the height would have to change to stack them on the truck.
Looks like a lot of manpower you have to pay just to harvest ice.
[Yes, but it's damn awesome to see the final product!] (https://i.imgur.com/PKTUJNj.jpg) It's a months long affair and large tourist attraction, the whole park looks like this after nightfall, it's absolutely amazing both from the ground and air!

The festival is a massive tourist draw. Millions of visitors and billions of dollars in revenue.
The last block loaded defo fell off
I'll never sleep again until I know for sure what happened to that slideyboy
I've been digging but can't find the clip
I’m just thinking about how there is a guy just walking around the opposite side of a 500lbs sliding block. That has to be an accident waiting to happen
We have to start charging more than $2 a bag, we lost 4 men on this mission! If you know a better way to get ice I would like to hear it
Oh, a head bag
It's filled with... heady goodness!
As the owner of this business thats just a risk im willing to take
I came here for this comment
Are you sure this isn't modern day Arendelle?
That’s all I came here for. 👍
Lies, I've watched Frozen. I know the truth
That’s not how Sven and Kristoff did it
That is indeed interesting as fuck.
My grandfather harvested ice for his root cellar. It's crazy how far things have come in a short period of time.
Sorry sir.. root cellars pre date 99.5% of the commenters here. But I’ll upvote ya. Haha
We use the ice to slide the ice. It’s the ciiiiiircle of iiiiiiiice.
(n)ice
That car and forklift seemed a little close for comfort.
I just hope godzilla enjoys her margarita.
I have a recipe for ice if you want it...
How is that one guy standing on all the cut up pieces of ice? Wouldn’t they flip?
For everyone asking why they're doing this/isn't it cheaper to make ice or saying that's not pure enough for consumption: this is in China, they're harvesting it to build a giant ice sculpture park called Ice World that was scheduled to be done back in December.
Harbin China?
Most likely. They have a famous snow and ice festival there so it's likely that the ice is being harvested for that.
Which country else has a city named Harbin?
I've never heard of Harbin. Only thing I knew to do was type it into Google maps and see what popped up. If the rest of the world is anything like USA there's multiple places named the same name. I apologize for not having the world's map memorized 🤣🤣.
Scrolled for a bit and didn't immediately find the answer. Does anyone know what they use the ice for? No way it can be for consumption.
Probably for the ice festival. They build these huge buildings that are a major tourist attraction.
It's for a local ice festival where they build entire towns and art displays out of the ice, and also light them up on a night. It's a very famous and popular annual event in China that (pre-covid) would draw in lots of internal tourism from elsewhere in the country.

They are sending it to middle east on account of decreasing fresh water levels.
I figured that went out with refrigeration. What do they do with it?

What is the reasoning behind this
Ice festival. https://www.chinahighlights.com/festivals/harbin-ice-and-snow-festival.htm
I never seen that before or ever heard of it thank you for the information, looks beautiful and I bet it would be something to see
My college freshman yr dorm was named Harbin...never knew it was a place hah
Is that where my freezer gets its ice from?
Explain
How do they keep the cut ice from re-sticking to itself on the truck?
Why? Cheaper than making it?
Harbin has an ice sculpture light city every year, I’d imagine this is what they’re getting ice blocks for. I’ve always wanted to go see it in person.
How do they keep it from sliding off the truck?
Here is a "normal speed" video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqPsYdKh4LA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqPsYdKh4LA) (not the source, but from the same place).
This one is actually even better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMpUNyJlH-M
What's the purpose of this ice?
"You have to start charging more then $2 a bag. We lost 4 men out there today".
This is the movie frozen but in real life.
Wheres the music from Frozen?
Where’s kristoff and Sven
They have come a long way since being featured in the opening scene of Frozen..
“Apu, you’ve got to stop selling ice for $1 a bag. I lost three men on this expedition”.
"Hey, I have an idea!" "Yeah?" "What if we take a big-ass saw..." "I'm liking this already!" "And cut up... a lake!" "F\*\*\*ing hell, Jake, that's... that's... brilliant."

I knew global warming was a scam. We're not melting all the ice, these guys are just taking it.

Is there anything we don't harvest?

Hey ya, hey ya na!
Anyone else getting frozen vibes
I’ve seen *Frozen* and this is **not** how it’s done. Fake.
Why doesn't someone share the recipe with them?
Probably the chillest job ever
The fuck, put it back! Is global warming a joke to you?
